“ The Optio S10 is capable of some really good results - the snag is that you have to work to achieve them. Yes, this is true for all cameras, but most compact digitals are used in auto mode and we think Pentax should have focused a little more (no pun intended) on improving the performance of the Optio S10 when used as a point-and-click camera... ”

“ The Pentax Optio S10 is a solid little camera in nice package. It operates quickly and is nice to use, except that the tiny control buttons may not appeal to some. The camera does provide a whopping 10 megapixel resolution and the noise performance is still good, probably thanks to the slightly larger-than-usual 1/1.8-inch sensor. The 2.5 inch LCD has 232K pixels of resolution, giving the view of your shots a nice smooth look. It would have been nice to have image stabilization or a longer zoom, but you'd probably sacrifice the compact size of the camera to do so. Image quality was good, with detailed, contrasty shots and accurate color reproduction... ”

“ Unlike many budget models we've seen lately, such as the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T2, Pentax strikes the right balance between noise suppression and sharpness in the S10. It produces nicely sharp photos with relatively little image noise, and which remain usable up to and including ISO 400--about a stop beyond the usual. It displays very good color, with generally neutral-to-cool white balance, even exposures and a broad dynamic range. The camera's only apparent weakness is its lens geometry, which exhibits slightly worse-than-usual barrel distortion at its widest end.
Though it's not quite up to performance standard of the Canon PowerShot SD1000, the Pentax Optio S10 certainly holds its own against higher-profile competitors from companies like Sony and Olympus... ”

“ As the new leader in the Optio "S" line, the S10 has an upgraded image processor, and a noticeable improvement in performance from previous models. Combined with the continued overall good image quality, makes this a very good choice in the "ultra-compact" market. The only down side is it can be a little slow focusing so it is not recommended for shooting fast moving actions or subjects. All things considered, it offers a very good value with an MSRP of US$250 or less... ”

“ I can understand the need to fit a large resolution chip into a camera as that is what consumers want at the moment, but I fail to understand is why the camera will only then have a small zoom or few features to entice. Unfortunately that is how the Optio S10 has panned out and therefore fails to deliver in key areas.
The camera is attractive to look at and works well enough. It is a good build and has a good lens. If you are looking for a point and shoot with a high resolution but little else, then take a look at this one... ”

“ The latest in a successful series of ultra-compact cameras, the Pentax Optio S10 combines excellent build quality, simplicity of design and good all-round performance with a user-friendly ease of use. It compares well with other quality compacts from rival manufacturers, and its very good low-light performance makes it especially useful for social snapshot photography. If you're looking for a camera to record the office Christmas party it should definitely be on your shortlist... ”
