“ The Pentax Optio W80 is an incredibly versatile compact digicam, with the ability to go and operate in conditions that only a few other cameras can. Featuring a 12-Megapixel imaging sensor, 5x optical zoom lens, and 720p HD movie mode, this camera comes loaded with great features. Performance is very good, while image quality suffers a bit due to the amount of noise present in our photos. This is something to consider, especially if you plan on making large prints. With a MSRP of US $299.95, this is one of a few waterproof models available in this price range. You can also check out the Canon PowerShot D10 or the Olympus Tough 8000... ”

“ If you need a tough little compact digital for that scuba holiday or a bit of snowboarding, then this upgrade from Pentax is certainly rugged enough, but for the price the overall quality of the images - except those taken underwater - is unexpectedly disappointing... ”

“ The Pentax Optio W80 is an easy-to-use, tough as old boots camera for all the family. Built to withstand virtually anything that you can throw at in (within reason of course), only so-so image quality lets the W80 down.

The 5x wide-angle zoom is a real bonus in such a small camera, and the wealth of beginner-friendly options make it a great choice for use by every family member. The HD movie mode is a bonus, although it does quickly eat up memory card space and the inability to use the zoom whilst recording is very frustrating. The triple anti-shake system sounds good on paper, but in practice the Pixel SR mode just slows the camera down, and the Movie SR mode physically narrows the angle of view.

The Pentax W80's achilles heel is average image quality, with noise in particular proving a real problem with the relatively slow speed of ISO 100 suffering from easily visible noise. The camera did handle chromatic aberrations well, and the 1cm macro mode is a real highlight, but you may not be able to literally see past the noise that will afflict virtually all the images that you'll take.

Which is a real shame, because otherwise we'd be recommending the Pentax W80 more strongly as a great all-round point and shoot camera that is also very competitively priced. The W80 just offers enough to warrant our Recommended award, but make sure to check out the Sample Images before buying... ”

“ If you live where the weather is always sunny (and you don't plan on shooting indoors), so you can park the camera's ISO setting at 100 and leave it there, the $300 Pentax Optio W80 is a fine choice. If you'll be shooting anywhere else, however, check out the $330 Canon PowerShot D10. While it isn't as sleek or as thin as the W80, the D10 captures much-higher-quality images in all lighting conditions. If HD video is a top priority, the Panasonic TS1 does it much better than the W80, but that camera had some issues with its waterproof casing in our tests... ”

“ So there you have it: if you’re looking for a camera to use in the great outdoors and, in particular, underwater then the Optio W80 is a good choice when it comes to standing up against the elements. You can use this camera on a beach, up a mountain or below water, safe on the knowledge that the Optio W80 will come to no harm, provided you don’t do anything silly. A pity though, that the resulting images may not look so robust... ”
