“ With a slick lens cover protecting a 7x zoom in a pocket-size camera, and face detection in the mix, the Pentax Z10 has a few interesting features to line its spec sheet, but by and large it's a pretty ordinary digital camera offering. It has 15 shooting modes, an easy menu, and a simple interface with moderately small buttons. Performance is not remarkable, but not bad either. Corner sharpness is respectable, but pincushion at telephoto is extreme to a fault. The zoom control is well-behaved, however -- a welcome surprise -- because it zooms and stays put, unlike others that zoom, stop, refocus, and significantly reframe. Printed results are also respectable, turning out good quality 11x14-inch prints up to ISO 200, and ISO 1,600 permits decent 4x6-inch prints. The Pentax Z10 is a decent little camera, but it isn't a top pick... ”

“ Viewed in isolation, the Z10 is a fair compact with a bigger than average zoom, and a non-extending lens which unusually can be used while filming a video. But the lack of optical or sensor-shift stabilisation is pretty unforgivable in this day and age – especially for a 7x zoom model – and the fact you can get so much more from the competition at little extra cost makes it ultimately hard to recommend.

Keep an eye on prices though – if the gap between the Z10 and models like the Panasonic TZ3 widens, then it’s certainly worth a look, but when they’re this close, you’d be advised to check out the competition instead... ”

“ Taking a big step forward with a 7x optical zoom, the Pentax Optio Z10 adds some much need versatility to the Optio line. Featuring many wonderful features such as face recognition (up to 15 faces), shake reduction, multiple scene modes, and a new feature that allows you to recover deleted files right from the camera itself. This is one of the easiest cameras to use that you will find when in "green mode", but there are also several manual controls in program mode. The quality of the images is good as long as the ISO is kept down. That said, with a price ranging between US$220 - $250, this is a very nice camera with a slew of useful features and versatility that you wont find on too many other cameras in this price range... ”

“ The Pentax Optio Z10 provides an intuitive interface with a handful of extra features that should serve beginners well, while offering a few more advanced capabilities like the digital wide feature and effects for them to grow into. The compact size makes it a great travel camera.

However, when the camera gets into more difficult area like fast-action or low-light conditions, it begins to struggle. Also, the lack of any optical or mechanical image stabilization is a serious negative in a camera that has a 7x optical zoom.

It should be perfectly adequate for those looking for an ultra-compact, no-hassle point and shoot with decent image quality... ”

“ The Pentax Optio Z10 is a fairly unremarkable point and shoot camera with the obvious attraction of a 7x zoom lens that covers every focal length from moderate wide-angle to sports-shooter telephoto. It's a really great addition to such a compact camera, and you'll never go back to a "standard" 3x zoom model after trying out the versatile Z10. Pentax have concentrated on making the Optio Z10 very easy-to use, with most aspects of the camera designed to be standard and non-intimidating. There are a wealth of different scene and playback modes to suit the camera's target audience. On the downside, image quality is severely hampered by noise, which appears at ISO 200, becomes very noticeable at ISO 400, and reduces images to a pixellated mess by ISO 3200. The digital Shake Reduction mode offered by the Z10 simply increases the ISO speed up to the maximum of 3200, which could leave you with some very unattractive photos. The Z10 with its 7x zoom lens really suffers from not having a true optical or CCD-shift anti-shake system, and it doesn't compare well with other 7x zoom cameras like the Ricoh R7, which do offer this system. In addition the 8cm macro mode doesn't let you get very close to your subject, and the maximum shutter speed of 4 seconds limits what can be achieved at night. The must-have feature for all compact digicams in 2007, Face Recognition, is supposedly one of the headline additions, but as with most of these systems, you'll get better results by focusing the camera yourself. Performance was quite good, with focusing fast and accurate even in low-light, but it's best to stick to the single-shot mode and not expect too much from the slow continuous mode. Overall the Pentax Optio Z10 is appealing on paper, but less so in the flesh, with poor image quality letting down what could have been a successful venture for Pentax... ”

“ The picture quality is very good apart from the fringing which only happens on extreme contrasting areas. The 7x optical zoom will come in very useful for those hard to reach places.

For the happy snapper that only needs a camera for days or nights out, then the Pentax Optio Z10 is perfectly suited to that task.

Despite the non-descript performance and middle of the road features, I actually like this camera. I think the appearance could be improved with a nicer sliding lens cover and maybe even a different colour, but it's still a nice camera... ”

“ This is nicely made point and shoot digital camera comes with a few extra bells and whistles ringing the changes for Pentax, but it is also one with a few bells and whistles missing, ones that really should have been there to ring out loud and clear.

Image quality is okay but hampered by noise, unless this camera is discounted quickly, it is hard to see how it can compete... ”

“ The Pentax Optio Z10 is a bit of a departure for a company that has specialised in 3x zoom compacts for several years. Build quality and design are good, and general performance is adequate, but image quality issues and the lack of any image stabilisation limit its usefulness, and it looks rather weak compared to several competing models... ”
