“ OK, on one level the unassuming looking Pentax X70 feels free of frills; there's no tilting rear screen, option to add external flash via a hotshoe, nor the ability to shoot in Raw as an alternative to JPEG, as offered on rival models towards the higher end of the pricing scale, but that said, if you can find an Internet pricing around the £300 mark, the X70 offers fair value. At full asking price £369 it feels a tad too dear to truly have the 'X' factor.

So can one size truly fit all when it comes to the myriad demands of the digital photographer? Well, it's worth noting that operationally, the X70 shouldn't daunt anyone trading up from a compact or those looking to supplement their choice of DSLR with a more portable, reasonably versatile snapper. Plus, there's no doubting that having such an extensive lens reach at your disposal shoehorned into a relatively compact and lightweight chassis has its advantages. And once you've used the likes of Pentax X70 to achieve a wider range of compositions than you would normally with either a compact or standard lens kit DSLR, returning to either (with a typical 3x reach) feels like a step backwards... ”

“ The stabilized wide-angle 24X optical zoom is definitely fun, giving freedom to frame anything from far away. It is a good opportunity for candids or abstract framing. This is where the Pentax Optio X70 lives to its potential. The lens is sharp, quick and does not suffer from much distortion except near wide-angle.

In good light, keeping ISO 100 with highlight correction turned on, this Pentax can produce quality images with good exposure, color, white-balance and focus. The X70 certainly should live outdoors. Indoors, for moving subjects, it is let down by noise and slow performance. Those circumstances are best for a DSLR, yet certain ultra-zooms still do better.

Overall, the Pentax X70 does well. Being happy with it means understanding its limitations but as an outdoor camera with an incredible reach, it is a good one. Add the occasional use of its HD video-recording feature to the mix and its versatility shines.

Competition includes the Nikon Coolpix P90, Kodak Z980 and Olympus SP-590. Having seen only the P90 among those, it is clear that the X70 has the advantage in terms of image quality, exposure and focus. The P90 is a faster camera though, making it more suitable for moving subjects, at least in good light because that camera also suffers from high noise.

“ There's no doubt that the Pentax X70's lens is a lot of fun and other than the crippled HD movie capture and lack of a full-resolution burst mode, it has plenty of shooting options. If your photos are going to only be seen on a computer screen or made into 4x6-inch prints with an occasional 8x10, you'll likely be more than satisfied with its photo quality, too. The laggy performance is the only other major issue, but again, if you're shooting slow-moving or still subjects, even that's not much of a hindrance... ”

“ What makes the Pentax X70 stand out? Its compact size, light weight, 11 fps rapid-fire mode, and terrific usability. The X70 is smaller and lighter than nearly every other camera in its class; depending on your hand size, that might be either good or bad. Although its diminutive size gives it a slightly fragile feel, it’s nice to be able to tuck the camera into a backpack or throw it over a shoulder and hardly know it’s there... ”

“ Buy this camera if:
- You're looking for an ultra-zoom digicam with good wide-angle coverage, plenty of adjustable controls, in-camera editing and effective image stabilisation.
- You want manual flash adjustment plus a good range of flash settings.
- You want to shoot widescreen video for playback on an HD TV set.
- You'd enjoy taking very close ‘macro' shots.

Don't buy this camera if:
- You want to shoot raw files (this camera is restricted to JPEG capture).
- You need a camera with fast response times.
- You require high performance levels in dim or contrasty lighting.
- You require high-quality Full HD video with stereo sound... ”

“ So what makes the X70 stand out? Its compact size, low weight, 11fps rapid-fire mode, and terrific usability. The Pentax X70 is smaller and lighter than nearly every other camera in its class--depending on your hand size, that might be either good or bad. Although its diminutive size gives it a slightly fragile feel, I love being able to tuck the camera into my backpack or throw it around my shoulder and hardly know it's there. I'd just make sure I purchased a backup rechargeable battery to tote along with it... ”

“ The Pentax X70 is a good quality camera from one of the big names in the business, and is capable of producing good pictures over a huge zoom range thanks to an excellent image stabilisation system. It handles well, and is smaller and lighter than most of its competitors, however it has a serious problem with noise even at moderate ISO settings, and the limited battery duration is also a negative point... ”

“ Pentax has done a fine job with their first ever mega-zoom model. The Option X70 has a lot to offer with superb image quality, great optics, decent performance, and loads of user-friendly options. This is not only a easy to use digicam, but also a very capable photographic tool. The only issues I had with this model were the "wobbly" lens unit, uncomfortable EVF eye piece and the poor battery life. Those issues, aside, I feel the Pentax Optio X70 is a worthy competitor in the mega-zoom category, offering a good balance of features and performance in the sub US$400 price range... ”

“ The X70 offers a lot in the way of control and focal length, but is it worth the $400 price tag? Most ultrazooms are running at this same price point, and most have fared considerably well on this site, but the X70 is a great camera that offers a lot of control similar to a DSLR. Not only can the X70 take you from extreme wide-angle to super telephoto with one lens, it does so with the ability to take control of nearly every aspect of shooting.

In comparison with the Pentax K2000 DSLR, you can purchase this camera with two kit lenses, including the 18-55mm & 50-200mm for $649 from their Web store, giving you a zoom range of 18-200mm, which still can't touch the 624mm tele on the X70. For $250 more, you get a larger sensor, bigger camera and a larger quiver of lenses.

Depending on your experience with photography and your budget, the X70 is a worthy competitor in the growing ultrazoom market, and after using quite a few over the years, this camera by far exceeds where the others have failed. If you have the dough to move up to DSLR photography, then by all means do it. Nothing beats a good DSLR. If you're a dedicated shutterbug and want a camera with all the focal power you'll ever need in one place, the X70 is your camera. This is even a great intermediary camera for the casual shooter who wants to move up to a better class of camera than a typical point-and-shoot. All things considered and tested, the Pentax X70 is a worthy competitor in the ultrazoom market... ”

“ For the first camera in the superzoom range, Pentax have done quite well. I think they've started as they mean to go on by putting one of the largest zooms available in the camera. A lot of the other features are found on basic compacts and I think are simply there to bulk the camera out and keep it uniform with the rest of the range.

Noise needs to be addressed and I wouldn't mind seeing a little extra oomph in the colours although they're not unappealing... ”
