The extra features of the Samsung and the overall quality of its construction and performance really impressed us. Available online for about £180, it is decent value too. The Samsung is by no means perfect, but it does have some really useful features that should appeal to the fans of photo sharing out there...

As with most recent Samsung cameras, the ST1000 certainly delivers a lot of bang for your buck, but poor GPS performance and image quality ultimately let the side down.
The ST1000 is intuitive to use, with the combination of the well thought-out touch-sensiitve user interface and the high-resolution screen producing a camera that doesn't send us rushing back to a button-based control system. Only the gesture-based controls, which have you wildly waving the ST1000 in all directions, feel like an unnecessary extra.
Equally pleasing are the array of connectivity options, with the ability to easily transfer your images via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth proving a real attraction. Unfortunately the even more appealing GPS feature doesn't work as advertised in the one place where it's really necessary - cities - with many photos simply not being tagged at all. When the GPS tracking works, it does so without any input required from the user, but the downside is that you can't check on the camera if it's actually opertaing correctly.
And just like the WB5000 model that we reviewed earlier this week, the ST1000's image quality is also below par. There's unwanted noise in evidence even at the relatively slow speed of ISO 100, and by 400 and faster the degradation in image quality is plain for all to see. In most other regards the ST1000 delivers good if not outstanding results, but the noise is simply too obvious to get away from.
Our final complaint is that he ST1000 certainly doesn't have price on its side, with Samsung charging a rather high £349.99 / $399.99 for all that cutting-edge technology. There are plenty of cameras with more impressive image quality available for less money than the ST550, so you really need to be certain that you'll use all of its features before buying...

The Samsung ST1000 is one for the stylish, tech-heads out there. Its array of connectivity features shows attention to the future of digital media and, while this won't be for everyone at the moment, you can't help but take your hat off to it.
However, when it comes to taking pictures, the lack of a wideangle lens and the small zoom toggle can prove a bit of a letdown. Image quality is fine, but not as strong as some competitor models out there - and this seems to be at the expense of style, given a better lens would likely need to extend from the body, use up more space, and thus impact on the slender design. And, to be picky, minor frustrations such as the brand-specific connector being so short that it makes for highly impractical use at times.
Brush aside these small issues though and you're left with a high-class compact full of techno-wizardry that looks the part and performs well. Recommended...

The Samsung ST1000 is a gadget-nerd's dream, combining many of the features of a modern smartphone with a state-of-the-art ultra-compact digital camera. It is solidly made, performs and handles well and produces good results under a wide range of shooting conditions. It is very expensive though, so unless you really need the WiFi, GPS and touch-screen you can get the same picture quality for a lot less...

As if the Samsung ST1000's ultra-high-resolution touchscreen weren't enough, you also get straightforward and effective bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS features. The ST1000 is technically ambitious, but everything works well. If you're looking for outright picture quality, you can do better than this, but, if you want 21st century-connectivity, the ST1000 rules...

Well, it's not supposed to work like this. High-end, feature-packed cameras are usually, frankly, a mess: flaky, oddball features, a Frankenstein interface of patchwork hideousness, an image quality that, ultimately, feels like an afterthought
But the Samsung ST1000 is different.
It feels beautifully built even if the decision to place the lens where it is means you're in danger of taking too many photos of your left index finger and the 3.5-inch touchscreen on the back is just stunning...
