“ The new Samsung WB500 is an extremely impressive camera for the price. It looks good, has superb build quality, a huge list of features, and its performance measures up to cameras costing £100 more. It does have one or two foibles, but when it comes down to value for money it's hard to beat... ”

“ So is the WB500 worth buying, especially if you're considering an ultra-wide-angle long-zoom shooter? We think it is if you can forgive its slow focusing speed and limited manual exposure mode. If you intend to shoot in program mode most of the time, this point-and-shoot is worth some consideration. Also, the handy editing options and clever playback mode make up for some of the WB500's flaws... ”

“ Looks like Samsung came up with a pretty solid competitor to Canon’s SX200 and Panasonic’s ZS3/TZ7. The HZ10W AKA WB500 has a relatively modest 10 megapixels of resolution (in the insane megapixel race nowadays), a 10X optical zoom lens and a 2.7 inch screen.

The lens starts out really wide at 24 mm, wider than the rest of the competition actually, but is a bit slow on the telephoto end and its two main competitors have slightly longer 12X lenses. The camera is great for landscapes and shooting in confined spaces. Ergonomics were good with a command lever used for changing camera settings and a decent, raised right hand grip. The only quirk is the built-in flash, which is located in a place easily blocked by fingers.

The Samsung HZ10W has a full manual mode, which allows you to select both shutter speed and aperture value (there are no separate shutter or aperture priority modes though). There’s also manual focus, custom white balance and exposure bracketing for people who need manual controls. If you’re not that kind of person, the HZ10W also offers a bunch of scene modes, a fancy self-portrait mode and face, smile and blink detection.

The camera has a capable 720p HD movie mode which allows you to use optical zoom and image stabilization while recording, among other things. Performance and image quality were both good as well. The Samsung HZ10W is fast and responsive… it takes good pictures too, provided you have good lighting to go along with them. Lens distortion is low for a 24 mm lens and there’s software based redeye removal to get rid of redeye in people photos. Unfortunately, the camera disappoints when it comes to low-light – the camera doesn’t focus accurately in low-light (it even reports ‘focus lock’ despite not being able to focus) and pictures suffer from noise reduction that’s a little over the top. I recommend sticking to ISO 400 and below.

Provided that you’re going to take photos mostly with good lighting around, the Samsung HZ10W is a great camera. The camera combines an ultra wide-angle 10X zoom lens with manual controls, HD movie mode and speedy performance which landscape shooters, soccer moms and everyone else in between will love. The HZ10W’s only letdown is poor low-light performance, making it unsuitable for night club goers and candle-lit dinners.

Note from Brad: Well, many have also written to ask about the HZ10W/WB500 versus its sibling, the HZ15W/WB500. They’re both very similar, with the latter HZ15W having 2 additional megapixels, a HDMI port and Smart Auto (see the table at the beginning of the review) – so if you’re not in need of the HDMI port (the megapixel difference isn’t big and shouldn’t be a deal breaker), you can get almost the same camera for 30 bucks less... ”

“ In terms of image performance, it’s the colours delivered by the Samsung WB550 even when left on its default settings that jump off the review screen, being mostly warm and well saturated. On occasion this can almost make scenes resemble pages torn from a Japanese comic, though there’s no doubt that it lends punch to the blues and greens of landscapes and puts a healthy glow in the cheeks of human subjects.

It also ensures that would-be users have to do little, if any, in the way of post processing afterwards. Again, a beginner friendly feature, if the visibility of purple pixel fringing between areas of high contrast disappoints. At maximum wide angle there is some barrel distortion too – though not to a painful degree – while sharp results are achievable at extreme telephoto if there’s plenty of light available.

For those who demand a big zoom but want a relatively small form factor too, Samsung’s WB550 – along with the 10MP WB500, which otherwise boasts the same headline spec – suggests itself as a viable alternative to Panasonic’s pioneering TZ series of big zoom pocket cameras... ”

“ Despite its obvious flaws, in the right conditions this camera gives some seriously good images. They're sharp, well exposed and have a good colour rendition. What lets it down is the noise which is present at all levels but becomes a problem at mid to high settings which is no good for low light photography. There's also the slow response of the continuous shutter which means this camera is no good for fast moving objects in the dark.

If you're in the market for a compact that has a decent resolution, good zoom and above all gives excellent image quality, then get this camera. Just don't go to a night time rally... ”

“ The Samsung WB500 is an interesting camera, and if you settle for an average image quality, excellent operation, fine color reproduction and a large optical zoom range, you will certainly have fun with this mega zoom camera. Yet, we simply expected more from Samsung, certainly because over the last few years, Samsung has been telling us how serious the company is, and that they are on an unscrupulous mission to conquer market shares. That Samsung is in the process of doing so certainly can't be denied, however, the results for high quality digital camera products really trail behind the expectations. If you're looking for the ultimate camera, you will probably find the Panasonic LUMIX TZ7 the right choice. The Samsung WB500 is placed on the reserve bench, but does distinguish itself through its strong price/quality ratio... ”

“ At a suggested retail price of Php24,990 (it’s a bit odd though since in the US, it’s under $250), the Samsung WB500 is reasonably priced for the features it provide. There might be cheaper competing models out there that’s similarly spec’d but I personally prefer the design and construction of this one. The Samsung WB500 gives you a good mix of form and function but on the higher end of the price spectrum (the wider angle and manual mode could have bumped it up)... ”

“ The inclusion of the equivalent of a 24mm lens is to be welcomed and you certainly get a versatile zoom for your money. You also get plenty of features although quite how many of them users will get around to trying is debatable. But at least they’re there if you need them. Performance is good if not outstanding and the inclusion of HD video is a bonus, although it’s a shame Samsung makes it hard to view on a HD Ready set. If you you’re looking for a budget compact that will deliver decent results and aren’t too bothered about size, then the WB500 is certainly worth taking a look at... ”

“ No digital compact camera is perfect and the same goes for the WB500. Having said that, this particular unit is a very solid performer with far more pros than there are cons and it is difficult to look past the exceptionally versatile ultra wide angle, 10x optical zoom lens when researching within this price range.

If you’re after a super slim, lightweight compact that looks better than it performs, the WB500 is not for you. If, on the other hand, you can handle a little extra build in exchange for some great image quality and an impressive list of intuitive technologies, this unit from Samsung is highly recommended... ”

“ The WB500 is the flagship model of a new series of Samsung digicams that introduce a new Perfect Portrait System, which includes Face Detection, Beauty Shot and Smile and Blink Detection modes. Equipped with a 10.2 megapixel sensor and Schneider-Kreuznach 24-240mm 10x optical zoom lens, it sports a 2.7-inch LCD screen and provides a range of shooting modes, including High Definition (HD) movie recording... ”
