“ The Samsung WB550 is priced at Rs. 17,990. At that price you get a camera with 10x zoom and a wide angle lens, both of which come very handy. The image quality, save for a few issues, is quite good overall. The video recording too is nice and is almost good enough to replace your video camera. The display quality is superb, the interface is nice and simple and there are plenty of features as well. The design is a bit boxy but doesn't particularly look bad. Overall, the WB550 offers a good mix of performance and features but is slightly expensive compared to its rivals... ”

“ I'm sure there are people that will be thrilled enough by the Samsung HZ15W's lens and feature set to overlook its unremarkable photo quality and frequently frustrating menu and control design. But with similar--and generally better--options out there from Panasonic, Canon, Sony, and Kodak, it's a much tougher sell... ”

“ If you're one of those people who like to rip open the packaging and attempt to use the product inside without actually reading the instruction manual, the Samsung WB550 - the manufacturer's first attempt at combining a 24mm lens with 10x optical zoom - is a good option. And it comes with some unique features that up Samsung's game in the compact digital category... ”

“ Samsung HZ15W is part of the relatively new division of the point-and-shoot market, the compact ultrazoom. These squeeze significant zoom lenses into bodies only marginally bigger than a standard camera.

The major selling point of this camera is its 10x zoom, starting at an impressively wide-angle 24mm setting. The 12-megapixel resolution and 720p video capture are also impressive.

In our testing, the HZ15W generally performed very well. It had excellent image sharpness, good color accuracy, fast burst modes, and an image stabilization system that really seemed to help. The one area it did struggle with (and this is a significant issue) was with image noise levels. Above ISO 400, pictures rapidly devolved into a speckled mess. However, shots at ISO 400 and below were perfectly decent for image noise.

What we really liked about the HZ15W was the manual control. It wasn't quite perfect, but there are a lot of functions here that we appreciate seeing in a compact camera. The manual shooting mode offers the ability to set the shutter speed to any exposure length, and the aperture to either a maximum or minimum. Ideally, we want aperture control over the entire range, and aperture and shutter priority modes, which this camera lacks. The inclusion of any sort of manual exposure control is very welcome, though, as well as auto exposure bracketing... ”

“ Though it is beginner friendly, Samsung's WB550 fortunately doesn't look cheap and cheerful and neither should it for £299. While, OK, it may not be the most svelte compact around, compensation comes in the form of its broader-than-average focal range which provides competition for Panasonic's similarly specified TZ series of big zoom, small form factor compacts. For my money I prefer the TZ's styling, if admittedly the Samsung is just as much fun to use for candids and close ups, and easy with it. Basically the broader the focal range, the greater the range of compositional options for the user.

With ideal shooting conditions the WB550 impresses with its vivid, colour-rich imagery - with the caveat that this can veer towards looking slightly unrealistic on occasion. Keep an eye on the LCD and simply re-compose or stop down if everything looks a tad too bright and breezy.

Though a £299 asking price isn't overly inexpensive and in fact comparable with other more fashion conscious models with a smaller zoom, a quick Internet search found the WB550 on sale for just £230 from the largest online retailer, compared to £270 for the Panasonic TZ7 (admittedly 12x). You pay your money and make your choice... ”
