“ The Samsung NV100HD could have been a great camera. It has a striking but practical design, solid build quality, a decent lens, a good range of features and excellent performance. The autofocus system is excellent, and the HD video mode is a nice bonus. However the touchscreen interface is fiddly and picture quality is disappointingly poor... ”

“ The Samsung NV100HD could have been a great camera. It has a striking but practical design, solid build quality, a decent lens, a good range of features and excellent performance. The autofocus system works very well in low light, and the HD video mode is a nice bonus. However all these good points are spoiled by that fiddly touch-screen interface and the disappointingly poor picture quality of its over-powered sensor. The low price is tempting, but it could have been so much better... ”

“ The TL34HD offers aim-and-fire clicksters an easy-to-use ultracompact camera with plenty of ways to experiment with their photographic inclinations, as well as with HD video on the Web, but those benefits must be weighed against the snapper's uneven photo qualiity and subpar battery performance... ”

“ While the Samsung NV100HD’s retro looks and slightly fiddly touch screen operation may attract and repulse in equal numbers, its solidly constructed feel and reasonably well exposed images straight out of the camera should mean there’s little in the way of post processing needed by those looking to avoid hours slumped in front of a computer screen. Along as you like a well saturated, sharpened look to your images that is. Again it feels like Samsung (and other manufacturers) are simply playing the numbers game with the latest raft of 13, 14 and 15 megapixel consumer compacts, the actual physical size of the sensors being no larger than that afforded their 12 megapixel brethren to keep matters otherwise compact. Still, the NV100HD does look different to the rest of its direct rivals and Samsung is to be commended for at least attempting to stand out from the crowd with innovations of its own. Like most point and shoot snapshot cameras the NV100HD is not 100% perfect, but if for whatever reason you do feel you need a pocket camera with a huge resolution, for the money being asked it’s a reasonably sound option. Incidentally if you’re not bothered about a touch screen, you could save a few more pennies and just go for Samsung’s 13.6 megapixel L310W instead... ”

“ Overall the TL34HD is a great camera for travelers and anyone who just likes having a camera in their bag or pocket without having to think too much about it. It is capable of taking very nice images, especially outside with the resolution all the way up, There are some annoyances, like that the camera can output in 720p and 1080i, but you have to buy an optional HDMI cradle (the SCC-NV5HD) in order to use these features. Also touch-sensitivity is great most of the time, but once it gets cold out it becomes much less enjoyable. As far as the video goes, you can shoot in HD, which is a great asset. The quality could be improved but this still gives the TL34HD a leg up over the competition. With a current street price of about $240 it’ll be a great pick for a wide range of consumers.

Update: I recorded some HD video with the TL34HD in case you were looking for an example. I posted the unedited video on Youtube (make sure to watch it in HD). The settings used were 1280×720, High Quality, OIS on... ”

“ Yes, there's too much noise reduction, the movie mode's not great and the interface can be awkward, but these are all par for the course with super-slim, super-sexy compacts. What's striking about the Samsung is its elegance, its neatness and, most of all, its price. Why would you need to pay more?... ”

“ For those looking for a compact point & shoot camera and who like the idea of having 'extra' megapixels to either throw away (crop) or use to make larger prints, the Samsung TL34 HD should be given serious consideration. It's not a professional's camera, but it definitely has the ability to capture stunning photographs. While image quality degrades a bit in lower lighting, the camera easily holds its own with any other camera in this price range when it comes to noise levels - and most likely outperforms a good majority of them. The focus system is fast and accurate when shooting still images and the ability to just press a spot on the LCD to tell it where you want to focus is a great and easy to use tool. The rechargeable Li-Ion battery pack did a great job allowing what seemed to be an seemingly endless amount of photos, picture review, and video's on a single charge, no small feat considering the bright 3.0" LCD and frequent use of the zoom.

The camera ships with a PC connecting cable, stereo audio/video cable, wrist strap, and power adapter. A quick start guide is included but the full manual is in pdf format on the CD.

After spending the past couple of weeks with the Samsung TL34HD I can definitely recommend this camera to anyone who wants a reliable, pocket-size, digital camera with resolution to spare... ”

“ The Samsung TL34HD is somewhat of a mixed bag. While it offers some Very "cool" features, good image quality, fast performance, and loads of exposure options, the High ISO noise, above average amounts of CA, and the difficult to use touch screen system really bring this camera down. With a street price of US$330 or less, this camera has the potential to be a very worthy competitor in the high-end ultra-compact category if Samsung can correct a couple of these issues... ”

“ Samsung is showing itself to be a major up-and-comer with this and the NV40. We found the TL34HD a pleasure to use. Its interface was excellent, the touch-screen functioned far better than most of the competition, and it scored very well in the majority of our tests, especially white balance. Retailing at $299 makes it quite a bargain for a touch-screen camera. Of course, it isn't without its down sides. There are some design problems, like the difficult-to-reach zoom control, the propensity for the flash unit to get blocked, the proprietary port, and the very poor video result. However, even taking these into consideration, we give this camera our thumbs up... ”

“ The Samsung TL34HD is a mixed bag. It takes very nice shots in good light, but it loses detail in shadows and focusing isn’t super sharp. Video quality is solid too, but audio caliber is screechingly bad. Similarly, response for single shots is fine, but don’t expect to fire off a burst to capture moving subjects. The only real unqualified success here is the touchscreen interface, which is a pleasure to use. Paying under $400 for decent images and stills isn’t a bad deal, although ultimately, when it comes to the TL34HD, I was really hoping for better... ”
