“ The Samsung ST500 is a fairly typical 12MP ultra-compact, distinguished only by its touch-screen control and by its unusual front-mounted second monitor. This feature has its uses, and the camera is capable of taking good shots in most social situations, but the high price makes it poor value for money... ”

“ With the best touchscreen interface of any current camera and a useful secondary LCD for easy self-portraits, the Samsung ST550 is a real crowd-pleaser. The resulting poor battery life and so-so image quality unfortunately ultimately detract from the great first impressions.

The ST550 is a real joy to use, with the combination of the clever haptic control system and the high-resolution screen finally producing a touchscreen system that doesn't send us rushing back to a button-based interface. Only the gesture-based controls, which have you wildly waving the camera in all directions, feel like an unnecessary extra. The self-portrait LCD is the icing on the cake, making the ST550 ideally suited for use by all members of the family.

When you've got over that initial rush of excitement, however, two main problems raise their ugly heads. The main one is the incredibly poor battery life - just over 100 shots if make extensive use of the touchscreen, playback and the self-portrait screen - making a second battery a compulsory purchase. And as with the PL70 model that we reviewed earlier this week, still image quality is not that great, with noise at low ISO speeds blighting what are otherwise acceptable pictures.

Unlike the PL70, the ST550 doesn't have price on its side, with Samsung charging a rather high £299.99 / $349.99 for all that cutting-edge technology. There are plenty of better-specced cameras with more impressive image quality available for less money than the ST550, albeit without the clever bells and whistles.

And that's really the point. The Samsung ST550 is ultimately a very fun camera to use, despite its short-comings, thanks to its genuinely useful technological innovations. If you can't literally buy into that, then you should look elsewhere - try the ST550 out for yourself, though, and we'll bet that you'll be converted... ”

“ Overall, I liked the Samsung TL225. While it’s not a camera for everyone, it would be a great camera for those who don’t really take their cameras too seriously. It’s sort of a “people camera.”

If you like being in your own photos at arm’s length, then, as I’ve said, this is your camera. There are plenty of ordinary and boring compact cameras out there. The TL225 is not one of them.

It’s packed full of unique, but functional, features that put the camera into it’s own category. It’s slim and stylish, and will easily fit into just about any pocket or purse.

I’ve given you the worst news about the camera with the memory card format and proprietary cable. If you can get past that, then you’ll likely be happy with the TL225... ”

“ From our experience with it, the ST550 is a ladies-oriented camera. Every time we whipped it out, our female friends loved the front LCD and how convenient it was for them to take self-portraits--all they had to do was tap and smile. In this sense, Samsung has met consumer needs with the dual display. Image quality and battery life issues aside, this point-and-shoot is one of the year's more innovative products and should appeal to the trendy crowd... ”

“ Samsung has really hit a home run with this cleaver compact digicam. With the new DualView feature, you can not rest assured that your self-snapshots will be framed properly, and with the camera's affective Smart Auto, your photos will be sharp and properly exposed. The only issues I had with this camera was the locking up problem, red-eye in our people photos, and sometimes the Smart Auto choose Not to use the flash when it should. With a MSRP of $299, this is not the cheapest 12-megapixel model out there. However, it does offer a great value when you consider the versatility it offers with DualView, not to mention is packed full of the latest technologies (OIS, Smart Auto with Scene recondition, etc.) and features like a huge 3.5-inch LCD.... ”

“ As camera makers rush to try and come up with the next big thing to move camera volume during these economic hardships, Samsung has engineered a new idea that will either turn on new customers or have them scratching their heads.

My first thoughts about the TL225 were a bit cynical to say the least. I opened up the package and saw that there was no printed out manual (relying on a CD-ROM once again), strike one, and started to inspect the camera body and the rest of the contents. I played with the camera and wondered how the touch screen would fare, then I opened the trap door on the bottom, squinting in search of a memory card slot, until I realized it takes the same kind my Blackberry takes (MicroSD) - another strike.

The DualView proved to be a great idea, and is not gimmicky; it provides people who have to rely on others to take the picture the freedom to shoot themselves without help. This camera is for the independent photographer who prizes self-reliance, for the mother who wants to keep the attention of their infant child staring up at the screen, and for that matter, any person who wants a stylish and small camera that makes and processes decent images.

The cost might be a little bit high with a retail price of $350, and may turn off more than a few consumers. But if you like what you read, I'd suggest you take a shot at the TL225. I enjoyed shooting with it and found very little wrong with it once I got past my cynicism. The Samsung TL225 really is a cool camera. It works exactly as it is marketed, and it's worth trying out... ”

“ The Samsung DualView TL225 is an awesome little camera. It's not for everyone; although its extra abilities are nice, the secondary front LCD is definitely more for those who would rather be in front of the camera than behind it. Also, the touch-screen interface might drive some people insane regardless of how responsive it is. The camera is a standout in design and features and actually solves a real problem instead of just being a gimmick... ”

“ It's fairly uncommon that a compact comes along that shows true innovation - but the Samsung ST550 is certainly just that. Thanks to its dual LCD screens it's an inspirational camera, so hats off to the Samsung.

Sure there're a few small issues to iron out - the higher ISO image quality could do with performing better, the front screen should be easier to turn on, and the screen black out upon taking a shot can feel to disengage from the action. But brush those minor points aside and the abundance portrait and facial recognition technologies, image stabilisation, 3.5in wide touchscreen rear LCD, super macro mode and clever subject tracking auto focus make this a real 'people camera'. It looks the part, by and large plays the part too and can only get a big thumbs up... ”

“ The Samsung ST550's twin displays are what most people will pick up on, but it's the haptic touchscreen interface that's the real star. The camera's motion-detection capability is also very impressive. Its pictures are pretty ordinary, but the camera itself is a stunningly successful technical exercise... ”

“ Nonetheless, a camera, is still a camera. It must fulfill its primary purpose, i.e. an imaging quality worthy of its name. The ST550 is lacking somewhat in this aspect. Its wide-angle shots are great for family portraits, but the barrel distortion that comes with it might create skewed and undesirable images. While its sensor matches up to the current 12.2-megapixel count as shared by the recent camera announcements, like most compact cameras similar to its range, noise control and cleaning is still one of the toughest factors to handle. However, the saving grace of the ST550's imaging sensor is the well-balanced color representation with no overt amount of saturation.

We do laud Samsung for its move to keep its cameras slim, compact and looking great at the same time. But this comes at the price of its stamina. As we've noted, power efficiency isn't tip top with the ST550 managing less than 200 shots. Furthermore, with both LCD displays up and running, one might find the heat build-up on the device to be of some concern.

At this juncture, you would need to consider your priorities and expectations for a compact camera and how you intend to utilize it. If it is a simple gadget with nifty little features you desire, then the Samsung ST550 with its price tag of S$549 (and an 8GB microSD card) will go well with your purchase for the holidays. If imaging quality is of utmost importance with no compromises, there are others to consider. However, you would be doing yourself a disservice should you choose to not even have a hands-on trial of the Samsung ST550 and its nifty features. Who knows, you might just get convinced!... ”
