“ The Sony DSC-G3 isn't flawless but with its built-in WiFi and browser, 4GB internal memory, good functionality as a portable digital photo album and 3.5 inch Touchscreen LCD, this slender camera certainly differentiates itself from every other consumer digicam on the market. The big question is whether or not it's worth the high price tag. And that's a question that only you can answer, although given that when this review was posted, Sony had dropped the price of the G3 from $500 to $420 on its website, the cost of ownership is slightly more reasonable.

As a digital camera, the G3 offers good performance and image quality and a solid point-and-shoot feature set. But if you're not going to make use of the WiFi/browser or the huge internal memory, you'll find better value elsewhere... ”

“ Were it just a plain, ordinary, ultracompact digicam, we would call the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3 a responsive digital camera with good overall performance. Lens quality is about what you'd expect from any ultracompact, with some softening in the corners at both zoom settings, and moderately high chromatic aberration. Pincushion and barrel distortion are also on the high side. But exposure and color are pretty good, despite a few shifts in hue accuracy. Better noise performance at the mid-range ISO settings would be nice, too. However, the Cyber-shot DSC-G3 has good performance timings, making it fast and efficient when shooting.

But the Sony G3 is not just another sweet Sony ultracompact. It's a Web appliance. And even if the browsing experience isn't quite as delightful as using an iPod Touch, it works well enough to get a Google answer, check the N.Y. Times headlines or look for work on Craigslist. The Sony G3 can also handle WiFi uploads to select photo sites (including YouTube) and display images stored there as well. So you can, with WiFi access, instantly share images from an event like a wedding or a party. As long as the Sony G3's battery holds out, at least (which is why we recommend a spare)... ”

“ The Sony DSC-G3 is a very sharp camera in both its styling and the images it produces. Anyone who selects this camera will be pleased with the numerous features and options it has on board like scrapbooking and music for slide shows.

Those who actually need the abilty to be able to make high quality images and then to quickly transfer them to sites where they can be quickly viewed will be pleased with the built-in Wi-Fi capabilty of the G3 that allows it to be used at thosand's of public AT&T access points.

For those who might consider buying this camera with the thought of uploading a lot of images to, say, their Shutterly account while on vacation, they will probably be disappointed with the time it takes for the Wi-Fi to upload those images and the amount of battery power that is sucked up in the process.

While this camera will easily take care of the needs of a family, at nearly $500 it probably isn't the camera that mom and dad will invite the kids to use on a regular basis.

This camera is certainly a great pick for the right user, particularly one who can see its advantages for business use or for one who wants the highest level of technology out there in a very small package... ”

“ Though not super speedy, the G3 performs pretty well for its class. It can wake up and shoot in just 2.2 seconds, though that assumes you've successfully slid the camera open all the way on the first try. In good light it focuses and shoots in only 0.3 second, and manages that in a solid 0.8 second in poorer lighting. It only takes 1.8 seconds for two consecutive shots, which increases to 2.2 seconds when flash recycle time becomes a factor. It can also shoot more than 50 frames at 1.6fps in burst mode. However, the G3's battery delivers a big performance downer: it uses a meager 680mAh model, far less powerful than its competitors, and hardly up to the model of constant use you'd expect from a portable photo album/browsing device, much less a digital camera. In practice, I couldn't go a day (of sporadic use) without seeing the low-battery indicator flashing... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3 has a number of factors going for it. It's stylish, easy to handle and has an impressive amount of internal memory. It's also blessed with the best Wi-Fi system we've ever encountered on a camera, due to the grace of its impressive built in browser, something thats new to the camera world. However, since it has the same internals as the DSC-T700, this also means that it's be plagued by a slow and inaccurate touch screen, lack of manual controls, and might suffer the same overall below-average result in our lab tests (though we hope a firmware update might be able to fix this). It also has the substantial price tag of $499.95, which is a significant amount of money. If you want a camera that looks gorgeous, and have the funds, this is undeniably stunning, but if you want strong manual controls and excellent image quality, you might want to look elsewhere... ”
