“ I liked the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20 the minute I opened the box and saw how compact it was. It isn't small, no, but it isn't a brick either. And since it includes a 10x optical zoom, that's saying something.

I wasn't really thrilled about the interface, which sends you to the menu system for common adjustments like EV compensation. But I did appreciate having a Manual mode. In fact, every digicam should have this range of options on the Mode dial (plus the rare Aperture and Shutter priority modes).

Image quality was surprisingly good. There was the usual chromatic aberration common in long zooms but the images seemed sharp corner-to-corner and color was good. That wasn't a surprise, but the color and detail at higher ISOs was. The Sony H20 simply captured some excellent images.

I can't think of a situation indoors or out that the Sony H20 wouldn't be able to handle. And with its range of options (like Manual mode and HD video), you can even play around a little, too. The 10x zoom beats the daylights out of 3x and 5x zoom digicams if you're traveling, and the image quality is among the best I've seen in a small camera, and the price is tough to beat. That easily earns it a Dave's Pick... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20 is an affordable super-zoom compact with a 10x stabilised lens and HD video recording capabilities. Slightly larger than the average compact, it's nonetheless smaller than most cameras with zooms of this range and will fit in a jacket pocket.

It produces excellent quality still images at lower sensitivities and you can also use the optical zoom when filming video - currently something of a rarity in cameras in this price bracket.

The Cyber-shot DSC-H20 also has a wide range of auto exposure modes, quick and accurate autofocus and an easy to use menu system, which makes it ideal for anyone who likes the ease of auto modes, but also wants to be able to try something more ambitious using the manual settings. It's is an excellent camera that combines long telephoto reach, ease of use, manual exposure control and HD video in a compact and affordable package - as such it comes Highly Recommended, but if you have more to spend, check out the alternatives above... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20 is an all-around excellent camera. It's well-designed, comfortable to use, and has a good mix of features including three types of automatic shooting modes and a manual mode if you want to tinker with shutter speeds and apertures (though there are only four available). The menu system is refined from other Sony cameras simplifying use. And while its photos are not stellar, they're very good for its class--and for Sony... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20 is much more than an incremental upgrade to last year's H10. With this camera, Sony has demonstrated that it is a company which listens to user feedback, as most of the issues we criticised the H10 for have been addressed. The engineers have redesigned the handgrip and the controls, added important features like custom white balance and HD video recording with zoom, and improved those aspects of image quality that needed to be addressed, including automatic white balance, colour, noise, dynamic range and chromatic aberrations. These enhancements have transformed the Sony H20 into one of only a handful of digital cameras that manage to achieve maximum user satisfaction with a minimum of frustration.

Is it a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 beater then? In some respects, yes. The full-manual exposure mode is a real competitive advantage, even with the inevitably limited aperture control provided; the flash is more powerful and the lens provides more telephoto range. On the other hand, the H20 lacks true wide angle, where the TZ7 goes out to a nearly ultra-wide 25mm equivalent. Furthermore, the TZ7 is more solidly built, has a dedicated exposure compensation button and arguably produces sharper images with less distortion (though the H20 is not that far behind). At the end of the day, the choice between these two cameras boils down to what kind of photographer you are and what features you value more.

If it weren't for the lack of wide angle and quick access to ISO and exposure compensation, we would be tempted to award our highest 'Essential!' rating to the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H20. With these few deficiencies, we feel more comfortable giving it our second-best rating, 'Highly Recommended', which is well deserved and a step up from the 'Recommended' award we gave to its predecessor last year.... ”

“ The main problem with the H20 is that it lacks a wide-angle zoom. Otherwise though, its responsiveness, handling and controls make it a great camera to use. It's very effective at full zoom too, which is where many rival compact superzooms struggle. Finally, the rather good HD movie mode is a major selling point on its own... ”
