“ The Sony Cyber-shot H3 delivers in many of the areas that will be important to buyers shopping for this kind of camera. It offers a generally good, stabilized 10x zoom lens, snappy shot-to-shot performance, a good flash unit, and nice color reproduction. But in evaluating cameras, I always come back to the idea of how refined a particular unit feels. In my mind, this word suggests both quality and cohesiveness – a product with good individual component and system performance that also comes together as an integrated whole. The H3 impressed on several counts while shooting, offering ease of use that's not easy to find in a more powerful camera and baseline image capture that is very good. But the interface, while better here than on some other Sonys, continues to get in the way of a seamless shooting experience, as do poor high-ISO performance and persistent exposure and white balance concerns. With a visual package that, at least to me, isn't very appealing, the H3 still seems a bit disjointed: in short, it's simply not as refined as some competitive models.

With all of the good here, though, and with some serious competitors often overshadowing the slightly less visually and functionally assertive H3 in the current market, if you're shopping for a pocket-sized camera with ultra-zoom capability, there is no good reason not to consider the Sony as well. It's clear that in light of some noteworthy limitations, the Cyber-shot H3 doesn't dominate its class, but with image quality and features that strongly compete in most respects, it's still a serious contender... ”

“ I must admit I wasn't that impressed when I first held the Sony H3 in my hands. It looks like a toy camera and the build quality did not inspire my confidence either. In the three weeks or so that I have now used and tested the H3 I have had to somewhat change my opinion. In fact I have even grown a little fond of this latest addition to Sony's 'High-Zoom' range.

The H3 offers a massive zoom range in a very compact package: if you are looking for a camera that you can carry all the time but don't want to dispense with a very long zoom, you should seriously consider it as one of your options.

Image quality in reasonable light is good, the output is ready to print, sharp and with appealing colors. At higher ISO ranges and in low light this picture changes but the results are no worse than on the competition's comparable models - certainly not at standard print sizes. The image stabilization system works efficiently (though don't expect miracles at very low shutter speeds) and can help to reduce the need for very high sensitivities in at least some shooting situations. The H3 is a little prone to highlight clipping and there is some minor evidence of color fringing but you'd see that on most other compact cameras as well. The built-in flash does a decent job and has good reach, though sometimes a small dose of negative flash compensation can be beneficial in order to avoid blown-out highlights... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H3 is a serious player in the 10x pocket zoom category. The design aesthetic is both modern and classic, and a clean and simple interface makes this camera a lot of fun to shoot. Its low ISO image quality is extremely high, although we'd recommend staying at ISO 400 and below when fine detail is a must. At high ISO, aggressive noise filtering makes for smooth images without obnoxious amounts of noise, although this does come at the serious expense of resolution. But there are times when we are willing to make this tradeoff, and unless there is superfine detail that is critical to the image integrity, we'd rather have a smoother, lower resolution image a lot of times than a speckled, noisy mess that we've got to apply post-production noise fixes to anyway.

We wish the 10x zoom was a little wider at the wide end (and with less barrel distortion) for landscape and touring photography, but we do love the nearly 400mm (35mm equiv) reach. There are times when the light is extremely low and not getting the shot is simply not an option. In these situations, the Sony Cyber-shot H3 has a nice feature set that can help make the can't-miss shot... ”

“ When a camera like the Sony H3 comes into a crowd of photography enthusiasts like we have here at Imaging-Resource.com, the question is, "Is that a camera I can carry when I don't want to schlep my SLR?" Well, while most of us can't stand the Sony H3's Home menu, we have to admit that it's a nice lens and that its printed results are quite good. The large lens shade is a bit off-putting, taking up more space in a bag than the camera itself. But overall, the Sony H3 is a nice little camera that will deliver good shots in most lighting situations, and its extra features and extra fast pre-focus shutter lag are just enough to serve as a quality snapshot camera. However, its increased chromatic aberration at telephoto that runs across the entire frame, plus the limitation of only two aperture settings might prevent most picky SLR shooters from thinking of the Sony H3 has a true SLR replacement.

As a quality digital camera for the everyday shooter, however, the Sony H3 offers a lot. A 10x zoom in a small package is always welcome; and it comes with the image stabilization it needs to get the long shots. Face detection and lots of ISO headroom mean you'll be able to take better photos of friends and family with and without flash in more places. Though there are a few foibles that might not make the Sony H3 for you in particular (see the Pro/Con list above), we still see the Sony H3 as a great camera that's worthy of a Dave's Pick... ”

“ If you can manage with limited wide-angle coverage and do without a viewfinder, a full range of exposure adjustments and widescreen video recording, the DSC-H3 is a nice little camera that delivers good quality pictures for the money.

We found image noise to be well controlled, making higher ISO settings usable – an unusual feature in a small-sensor digicam – although we recommend staying below ISO 1600 wherever possible... ”

“ If you want a long zoom lens in a camera that's smaller, if not lighter, than most superzooms, Sony's DSC-H3 is a decent choice. Since this is a new category, it's hard to draw comparisons, but when Canon's Powershot SX100 hits the market in October, we should be able to get a better idea of how this Sony compares with the competition... ”
