“ There is a lot to like about the HX100V. Its 30x optical zoom lens, which covers 27-810mm (equivalent) is incredibly versatile, the camera feels great in the hand, is comfortable to use and its 16MP sensor provides image quality which, at most ISO sensitivity settings compares well with the best of its competition. Especially impressive is the HX100V's video mode, which offers a maximum quality of 1080/60p from 60fps sensor output. In addition, as we've found with other recent Sony cameras, both compact and interchangeable lens models, high-speed modes like Backlight Correction HDR and Hand-held twilight work well and add real value to the camera.

The Achilles' heel of the HX100V is without a doubt, its slow operational performance. Its headlline fast framerate modes are exactly that - fast - but basic operations like reviewing images in playback and switching modes involve significant wait times that can easily mean the difference between capturing or missing that special moment... ”

“ It's taken longer than usual for Sony to bring a new super-zoom to market, but the wait has been worth it. The Cyber-shot HX100V is a very capable model that's packed full of exciting features, is nicely designed and handles beautifully. In terms of headline features it ticks just about all of the boxes with a 30x stabilised optical zoom, 3 inch flip-up screen, full HD video, and fast continuous shooting.

The list of 'extras' is impressively long including built in GPS location tagging, 3D modes, hi resolution panoramas, composite modes including HD and background defocus and a built-in Neutral density filter. To cap it all off, the 16.2 Megapixel Exmor-R sensor delivers top notch quality images. The only significant issue that's likely to bother more advanced shooters is the lack of a RAW mode. If that's a deal-breaker for you then consider the Panasonic FZ100 and FZ45 / FZ40 or the Fujifilm finePix HS20 EXR. The bottom line is Sony's Cyber-shot HX100V promises to be one of the best super-zooms of 2011 and I have no hesitation in Highly recommending it... ”

“ The review was conducted under less than ideal circumstances; getting the camera with no manual, after a day or two eventually tracking down a small PDF guide on the Net. This was a far from ideal publication, in English and Spanish, with only 33 pages in my mother tongue. Olι!

The camera is a reasonably complex one, so you may have difficulty in figuring out its options in the tiny manual... ”

“ The Sony Cybershot HX100v has a high price, yet justifies that with a camera packed with advanced and useful features, including 10fps continuous shooting, backlight HDR mode, 42.9 megapixel panoramic mode, manual controls, GPS, and full HD video with stereo sound. As well as this there is a high resolution tilting screen, electronic viewfinder with eye-detection and a well built body with rubber hand grip.

All of this would be mute if it wasn't backed up by images to match, and thankfully the Sony Cybershot HX100v produces the goods, with a brilliant 30x optical zoom lens. It's not only capable of producing great images from wide angle all the way to telephoto, but it also produces excellent macro photos with great detail and colour. With a back lit CMOS sensor noise is very low right up to ISO800/ISO1600 and video quality is equally excellent.

The electronic viewfinder is a little small, but of a high quality and useful in bright sunlight. Battery life is very good, offering over 330 shots, and the built in manual is extremely useful. The Sony Cybershot HX100v is without doubt the most feature packed ultra zoom available, and produces image quality to match. Highly Recommended... ”

“ The Sony CyberShot DSC-HX100V is one of the best super-zoom camera that we've ever reviewed, offering a compelling mix of advanced features, excellent still image quality, fantastic lens and a class-leading video mode, all at a price that is competitive with its main rivals.

The move to a 16 megapixel sensor may elicit groans amongst more experienced photographers, but in reality Sony have been able to maintain the excellent image quality that the previous 9 megapixel HX1 offered. The 16 megapixel backlit sensor provides excellent results from ISO 100-800, with only the fastest settings of 1600 and 3200 suffering from too much noise and smearing of fine detail. Chromatic aberrations are well controlled and colours accurate, and the incredible 27-810mm lens remarkably doesn't suffer from too much distortion at either end of the zoom range.

In addition to the excellent still images, the Sony HX100V is one of very few digital compacts to offer full 1080p video recording, gaining the upper hand on its key rivals. You can use the 30x zoom during recording, sound is stereo rather than mono, and the AVCHD format ensures that file sizes don't get out of control, although regrettably there is no manual control available during filming. The built-in GPS also works well, unobtrusively and reliably recording your every movement, although the camera takes a few minutes to sync with one or more satellites and the battery life is reduced by around 25% if you leave it constantly switched on.

The full range of manual, aperture and shutter priority modes and the intuitive focus/zoom ring means that the HX100V can rival a DSLR in terms of its handling, although the lack of a RAW mode and the non-rotating LCD screen may put off some more demanding users. The Hand-held Twilight mode delivers great results at night, albeit with an increase in noise levels, and Sony's ever popular Sweep Panorama mode now offers an impressive 42.9 megapixel high resolution mode. The Backlight Correction HDR feature dramatically increases the detail in the shadow and highlight areas, while Sony's excellent hand-holding Intelligent Auto modes are as effective as the competition's.

Add in the 3D Sweep Panoramas and 3D Still Images, amazing 10fps burst shooting mode and 0.1 second auto-focusing, and it's very easy for us to highly recommend the Sony CyberShot DSC-HX100V as an all-in-one, do-it-all camera that won't break the bank... ”

“ As much as I find a lot to like in the HX-100V, in the end it still is a small sensor camera – no different in terms of image quality to legions of cameras with small 1/2.3" sensors. Yes, this new generation of backlit CMOS sensors is better than what's come before, especially at higher ISOs. But, even at base ISO these tiny sensors can turn fine detail into watercolour mush – sometimes even when seen on moderate sized prints, let alone at 100%... ”

“ Buy this camera if:
- You're looking for a well-built, long-zoom digicam with good wide-angle coverage, plenty of user-adjustable controls and image stabilisation.
- You can benefit from the fast burst capture and multi-shot recording modes.
- You'd enjoy shooting Full HD video clips with stereo sound.

Don't buy this camera if:
- You're looking for a pocketable camera.
- You want to shoot raw files (the HX100V is restricted to JPEG capture).
- You want fast and direct access to ISO, white balance and exposure compensation settings.
- You require colour accuracy under artificial lighting... ”

“ Although we would need to test the Sony HX100 fully – the sample we had was still pre-production – Sony has made a great camera for those not quite ready to go to a full DSLR, but want to maintain a modicum of manual control.... ”

“ In our brief play the camera performed well, the superior auto effects appeared virtually instantly and the zoom’s stabilisation was good from what we can tell from the pictures we have. It’s worth pointing out that Sony have said that while the hardware is 100 per cent finalised the images are only around 90 per cent with final tweaks still to be made before the camera comes out in April.

Other points of note is that the Alpha fleck design has trickled down here to the casing, and that you get an electronic viewfinder as well as a 3-inch tiltable LCD screen on which to see all this stuff going on... ”
