“ Sony's CyberShot DSC-T2 is a very unusual camera, indeed. Normally, we talk about cameras with a pointless amount of internal memory, kind of like 26mb, which is enough for only a handful of photos from the latest multi-megapixel cameras, such as the eight megapixels on offer here. But, the T2 breaks the mould, offering a whopping dirty great big 4GB of storage space - which is enough for over 1200 pictures shot at the highest quality!... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T2 is an extremely stylish ultra-compact camera with a range of interesting and innovative features. If you can cope with the rather fiddly touch-screen interface and keep your fingers away from the lens, you'll find it an excellent camera for social snapshots, and the creative playback features are a lot of fun. However it is quite expensive, the the overall image quality doesn't live up to the price tag... ”

“ From a design perspective, the Sony T2 is a breath of fresh air, integrating 4GB of memory in the camera, replacing awkward buttons with a sensuous touch screen, and wrapping the whole package in an elegantly sculpted aluminum frame the size of a small pack of cards. Automatically organizing your image collection by date and frequency within the date, it also provides a unique playback mode inspired by scrapbook design. And it's no slouch when it comes to performance, obliterating prefocus shutter lag, and significantly reducing full-autofocus shutter lag. The lens does exhibit chromatic aberration, detectable in some images at 11x14-inch print sizes, but isn't significant at 8x10. High ISO performance really isn't good enough to make up for the weak flash, but those are expected compromises in a camera of this size. If you can accept these compromises, the Sony T2 is a good choice thanks to its very small stature, extremely large built-in memory, and good print quality at small sizes, under 8x10. There are other small cameras that don't compromise as much on image quality, however, including the Sony T20, except that they don't have all the memory that the Sony T2 has. We were tempted to give the Sony T2 a Dave's Pick, but it just misses the mark when we also consider the poor flash performance. You'll get okay flash pictures with the Sony T2 in terms of exposure, but the camera has to raise the ISO so much that even 5x7 output is soft and noisy -- even if you lock it to ISO 200. That's just not satisfactory for most indoor snapshots. The Sony T2 is a good and stylish camera that has a lot going for it, but it's not the best choice for both indoor and outdoor photography... ”

“ Overall, the Sony CyberShot DSC-T2 offers good performance in a small package, but with a MSRP of $350, the camera's feature set is not enough to justify the price. While 4GB of built-in storage is nice to have, the camera's single proprietary connector makes the easily misplaceable dongle a necessity for removing images, making a removable memory card more practical. Sony also leaves a lot of opportunity for beyond the box purchasing by leaving out HD component and standard video cables ($40 each). Docking stations for your PC ($50) or television ($80 with remote) also add to the price. Consider purchasing an additional data cable if bringing the camera on a vacation. Be prepared to spend upwards of $400 in order to take advantage of all the features Sony advertises with the T2. Unless built-in storage and a touchscreen interface are must-have features, your hard earned money may be better spent on a Sony T70 or T200... ”

“ Overall, the T2's photos look pretty good. As with the T200 and T20, they're softer than the previous generation's--notably the T100--and than some of the competition's, due to what looks like more aggressive noise reduction. Still, they show good exposure and automatic white balance. There's a bit of lens distortion and a bit of purple and cyan fringing, but the colors look pleasing and reasonably saturated. Like most snapshot cameras, photos taken at sensitivities beyond ISO 200 look really mushy and by ISO 800 lack detail entirely, so take Sony's claim of ISO 3200 capability for the T2 with a chunk of salt.

Though it's a perfectly competent little camera, on the basis of features, image quality, and performance, there's little reason to opt for the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T2 over the less expensive T20 or better-equipped T200. If you find the design a significant attraction, then I suggest you visit one in a local store before making the commitment... ”
