“ Sony's top of the line model, the Cyber-shot DSC-T200 really makes a statement with its sleek design, high performance and pleasing image quality. It is incredibly easy to use with a 3.5-inch touch screen, well thought out menu system, and full auto and program modes with face and smile detection. With a MSRP of US$399, this model is a little expensive, but still offers a great value. If you like this camera, but would like something just a little cheaper, check out our review of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T70 . While offering most of the same features, the T70 has a slightly smaller LCD, and a shorter zoom range, but can be had for about $100 less... ”

“ Picky shooters will undoubtedly find plenty to pick at with the T200. Evaluated as a ratio of image quality to price, the T200 seems like a bad deal, and for serious IQ junkies it probably is. Sony’s menu systems are often unnecessarily intricate. Similarly, some will simply hate using the touch screen. It certainly suggests a different way of thinking about a camera, and the lack of quick and easy adjustments will be a hang up for many.

All of this said, the T200 combines a unique user experience with image quality that should stand up to the standards of most snapshot shooters. The touch screen interface is sufficiently refined, the feature set generally exceeds expectations, and real world shooting speed is impressive. Unquestionably, image quality continues to lag behind the best ultra-compacts. Even so, whether most of the issues presented – especially image detail concerns – will ever be noticed by the average user making average-sized prints remains an open question.

Can you get a camera that takes better pictures for less money? Absolutely. Can you get a camera with more style and a higher “gadget factor”? Maybe not. So is it worth the price? Like so many things in photography, it all depends on your perspective... ”

“ If the 3X zoom and 2.5" LCD on a typical ultra-compact just isn't enough for you, then you'll like the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T200. It packs a 5X zoom and an absolutely enormous 3.5" LCD display into an thin metal body. Of course, there are some compromises that come with those "big" features, but the T200 is still a pretty good ultra-compact camera, and one which I can recommend to most everyone. Just be sure to try it before you buy it, as the T200's ergonomics and user interface may not be for you.

From the front, the DSC-T200 looks like just another Sony T-series camera. It's made mostly of metal, and it feels pretty solid for the most part. It does have the annoying sliding lens cover of Sony's other T-series models, which makes it way too easy to accidentally turn the camera on or off. There are just three small buttons on the camera, and they're all located on the top of the camera, along with a small and awkward zoom controller. The DSC-T200's 5X lens reaches from 35 - 175 mm, which is a nice change from the norm. If you want to go wider, Sony sells a wide-angle conversion lens that snaps right onto the camera. Inside the lens is Sony's optical image stabilization system (known as Super SteadyShot), which does a nice job of producing sharp photos at slow shutter speeds.

Look at the back of the T200 and you'll see an enormous 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD display -- and nothing else. The screen is big in size, but its resolution of 230,000 pixels is the same as you'll find on smaller screens. I could certainly notice, but it didn't bother me particularly. Screen visibility is excellent outdoors (at the "bright" setting) and good (but not great) in low light. You'll control nearly all of the camera's functions via the touchscreen LCD, which can be frustrating at times. Some items are easy to access, while others require digging through Sony's confusing menu system. Having the icons around (and on top of) the field-of-view is odd, and it makes it difficult to compose photos at times. Holding the camera requires a bit of dexterity, as there are few places to put your fingers that don't block the lens or leave fingerprints on the LCD... ”

“ The smile shutter feature is more of a gimmick than a real benefit because smiles vary from one person to another, making it difficult to set the right detection level. Things get complicated with group shots because one person smiling can trigger the shutter before the others are ready. With both situations, you may need to keep re-shooting until you and the camera get it right – which is no real improvement on cameras without smile detection... ”

“ Sony's Cyber-Shot DSC-T200 is an interesting camera. Its pictures suffer from some sharpness and chromatic aberration issues, but are still good enough for small and medium sized prints.... ”

“ The Sony DSC T200 is right up there with the very best pocket sized digital cameras. The longer zoom and extra features in general should prove to be of interest, but it is the picture quality and shutter lag times that set this camera apart. It is one of the fastest cameras you will find and I have no complaints about the quality of the photos it takes... ”

“ As a direct replacement to the T100 which I reviewed, there is little significant differences between the two. The screen size is the most apparent, but even that is not strictly true. The biggest difference between the T200 and the T100 is the noise which is virtually undetectable on the T200 even at its highest rating and the brilliant Smile shutter feature. To reiterate, the flash can have a tendency to fire even when it is not necessary

If you are looking for a decent camera with vast options available to you, a good lens and excellent noise performance, then this is the camera for you... ”
