“ Given that 95% of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T300's functions are accessed via its screen, having a larger than average display proves both a boon initially, and, in the final analysis, a necessity. You either love or hate touch screen devices, and, if you've made it this far in the review, the notion can't have put you off. Don't let it, as the Sony T300 sports one of the most intuitive of menu and sub menu setups despite the lack of physical controls. Very quick to respond to your touch and effect any changes it is too. And, should you get a bit lost as you delve deeper and deeper into a wider array of options than found on the typical snapshot compact – including those retouching functions – a press of that 'home' button will act as some form of anchor. At around £250 / $400 though, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T300 feels pricey now that you can pick up a 10-megapixel camera for around £100 / $200. Though acceptable – and colourful – results can be achieve, its results are not quite as consistent as we may have hoped. Still, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T300 boasts a rock solid build quality and attractive brushed metal casing that goes some way towards justifying that price tag if style does truly matter as much as substance... ”

“ Small, compact and pocketable, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T300 is well-designed and easy to use. It captures good pictures under a variety of conditions, and has helpful tools such as Face Detection and D-Range Optimization to help out when things get tough. With a nice selection of preset Scene modes and useful post-capture editing options, the DSC-T300 has a lot to offer. Its touch screen display is handy and a snap to learn, making the overall shooting experience with the DSC-T300 pleasantly simple. It's at the higher end of the range at its MSRP of $400, but does offer 10.1 megapixels of resolution and a 5x zoom lens on top of its other capabilities. The Sony T300 is well worth a look, and quite deserving of a Dave's Pick.... ”

“ Overall, the Sony Cyber-shot T300 has some pretty attractive features for the crowd: a 5X optical zoom lens, equipped with image stabilization, a very big touchscreen display (which you won't find on any other camera at the moment) and considering the size of that LCD, above average battery life. The T300's highlight features such as Face Detection with an automatic smile-snapping function and fun playback modes make going about to point-and-snap photos more enjoyable.

While the Cyber-shot T300 is a good performer in terms of speed and image quality, there are some issues between those lines; which include some redeye and vignetting as well as the lack of a more capable burst more. I do have some issues with the camera's ergonomics and usability - sure the touchscreen interface is fancy, but the menus system is confusing and it simple takes too many 'touches' to navigate and change settings. The huge touchscreen also left no place for holding the camera on the back - this, plus the entirely touch operated interface, means some big time fingerprint issues on the LCD.

If you're an impatient person who likes messing around with settings, then the interface of the camera will get on your nerves in no time. For other casual snappers, the Sony Cyber-shot T300 may be worth your time to check out if you're looking for good picture quality without tweaking camera functions around, as well as the ability to record some decent, brief video clips with a nice-looking camera.... ”

“ It is not all negative though, the Sony T300 produces an excellent and consistent colour reproduction with an accurate white balance. It's a bit of a pity that only part of the image quality stands out in a positive way. Other than that, the Sony Cybershot T300 does prove itself. It is a camera with pleasant features, an ultra-large sized monitor and a very own way of operation. A camera that lets you stand out with a successful design. After testing the Sony Cybershot DSC-T300 technically as well as in practice, we have come to a conclusion with mixed feelings. The concept is successful as far as we're concerned, however, in relation to the image quality, the camera performs averagely and no more than that. ... ”

“ The Sony DSC T300 takes a good picture and in my opinion has a stunning design. Picture quality does not quite match up to the very best, but if your main consideration is design, as long as the camera can still take a decent snap, then the DSC T300 is well worth considering.... ”

“ An attractive package for those looking for a stylish and fairly simple compact. It can be slow at times and there are some image quality issues, but the pictures are fine for small print sizes and many will appreciate the aesthetics and futuristic menu system.... ”

“ Our initial impressions of the T300 were not positive - with the function guide adding delays (but no useful information), and a 'plink' sound effect that screamed 'lifestyle accessory,' rather than 'camera,' every time it was touched (which does nothing to solidify the 'cameraness differentiation'). However, with these two turned off, the camera is transformed into a not-unpleasant, carry-everywhere snap shooter.

On the positive side, the T300 has a lot of features that will benefit its target audience. Image stabilization and dynamic range optimization will help produce better photographs for the user that is thinking more about capturing the moment rather than assessing the implications of the scene's lighting. There are also some useful post-processing effects (In-camera unsharp masking), as well as the flagrantly gimmicky ones (Apply 'Happy faces').

In fact, we suspect that there's a lot of Sony's W-series know-how lurking under the T300's slightly unusual exterior, making it reasonably nice camera to use. It's both easy and responsive in action and has a perfectly logical approach to metering, giving pretty consistent results. The lack of manual white balance and poor color-accuracy of the screen can occasionally lead to surprising results when you get them home but on the whole, it's a camera you can trust to do a lot of the thinking for you.... ”
