“ The Sony Cyber-shot T700 is an ultra-thin camera with a big 3.5 inch touchscreen. While the screen is big with good visibility, it isn’t very responsive and the touch-based menu system makes it hard to access some settings. The menu system isn’t that intuitive either; having two (or three at times) different menu systems which occasionally link up to the same area or do nothing at all.

As expected from such a thin and stylish camera, the Cyber-shot T700 is obviously meant to be a fashion accessory and strictly point-and-shoot. There aren’t any manual controls on this camera… however, there’s a ton of built-in memory (4 GB to be exact) and many fancy playback features (gimmicky too) such as the ability to draw on photos via the touchscreen. Movie mode is just so-so; with the camera able to record VGA movies with mono sound for 10 minutes per movie clip. I would’ve expected something better from such an expensive camera. Battery life is below average too.

Despite its good looks and really thin design, the Cyber-shot T700 isn’t a very good camera in terms of picture taking abilities and value. Image quality is just average and the camera sacrifices ergonomics and practicality. If you’re looking for a camera which can take good pictures and functions like a normal camera (instead of a fiddly-to-use, beauty without brains kind of electronic device), then there are plenty of options out there, and they cost less than the Cyber-shot T700... ”

“ Let us get one thing out of the way: if you are a control freak or a real stickler for image quality, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 is not for you. It's a point-and-shoot camera with a tiny sensor, after all. This means that you cannot manually control the shutter speed and aperture, and that the photos it produces can indeed look sub-par up close. But that does not mean you don't get any control over the picture taking process, nor does it mean that the images are unusable. Far from it. In fact, the level of control provided by the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 is actually higher than most people would expect from an ultra-compact camera. You can use exposure compensation, choose from evaluative, centre-weighted and even spot metering modes, specify by a touch of a finger where the camera should focus within the frame, call up a live histogram, and use the optical zoom even when recording video. And some of the functions that might seem gimmicky at first – such as the Smile Shutter, the anti-blink function or face detection – can actually come in handy in certain shooting situations; not to mention that they are undeniably fun.

And as regards the image quality, while it may not please a picky photo enthusiast, it is more than adequate for snapshots intended for on-screen viewing or common print sizes. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 might not be a success with the demanding and/or traditionalist photographer, but it is more than a great step up for those who have hitherto only been shooting with a cell phone camera, and is likely to elicit interest and favourable reactions in almost any company, at almost any social event. The 'coolness factor' of this device is very high, and it is likely to keep you and your friends entertained for a long time. All this coolness comes at a price though – the kind of money Sony are asking for it could almost buy you an entry-level DSLR at a fire sale. So as always, know your requirements, and decide based on the Sample Images as well as what you have read in the other parts of this review if the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 meets them or not... ”

“ This is one of the more expensive pocket cameras on the market. It looks great and will appeal anyone who is style conscious. Looking at the price tag I expect outstanding picture quality. The Sony DSC T700 does not quite hit those heights, but is still more than capable of decent snapshots... ”

“ The latest "Top Dog" in Sony's "T" series camera line, the Cyber-shot DSC-T700 is an awesome ultra-compact. This is a Fast camera that can capture beautiful images, all the while being as compact and stylish as they come. Like we saw on the T77, the "cool" touchscreen worked great, and is sure to impress your friends. There were very few annoyances with this camera, but with an MSRP of $399 the T700 is expensive. However, I feel the larger 3.5-inch LCD and the fact that you don't have to buy Any memory cards for this camera help bring that price into a considerable range. If you love the features of this camera, but don't really need the built-in memory or a 3.5-inch LCD, be sure to check out our review of the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T77. It offers just about all of the same features as the T700, is quite a bit smaller, and can be had for about $100 less... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 is a solid shooter with plenty of appeal. The big touch-screen LCD makes interacting with the camera a pleasure, and it has plenty of cool (if unnecessary) extras, like in-camera editing and various modes like smile and blink detection. Keep in mind, however, that with its shutter lag you might miss some photo ops, and with its power-sucking screen, battery life isn't as long as with other point-and-shoot cameras. Overall, though, the T700 delivers in the most critical way a camera can: It takes good, sharp pictures with a minimum of noise and a maximum of rich, realistic colors... ”

“ Hands down, the T700 is certainly the best looking, most solidly built small camera we've had the pleasure of shooting with this year. Sony usually earns serious points for style and build quality in our evaluations, but the general opinion around here is that they've even outdone themselves with this model. We shoot with a lot of cameras, and in my experience it's rare that random people will approach you to ask about your camera – especially if it's a point-and-shoot. But it happened with the T700. More than once. It really does look that good.

With all of its strengths on the style front and some solid performance marks besides, we're tempted to let the T700 off the hook for its generally lackluster showing in our image quality analysis. Certainly, if you're not hoping for more than a camera for taking pictures of friends and family to post online or make regular-sized prints from, the T700's image quality is generally very livable. But there's no denying the presence of some objectively serious flaws – from color fringing, to excessive saturation, to blown-out highlights, to shaggy high-ISO images – in the T700's sample shots.

So how to rate this Cyber-shot on balance? Like so many things, that all depends on user expectations and preferences. In our view, you can't get anything with more aesthetic appeal at the moment, and so long as you have realistic expectations for the T700's images, this alone may be reason enough to justify the purchase. If you're the type who likes to spend time dissecting the details of your shots, however, the T700 will give you plenty to agonize over... ”

“ If you're one of those people who wants to know what the best digicam is, the Sony T700 isn't the camera for you. Other cameras take slightly better pictures. Nothing, however, quite does what the Sony T700 does.

It's not only beautiful, but it can hold a year's worth of pictures and -- with the optional HDTV cable -- display them in a scrapbook or a pan-and-zoom slideshow format in high resolution on your flatscreen HDTV.

There are plenty of features like the large touchscreen, Smile technology, and image stabilization to make this new flagship worthy of its role, but the real reason to buy this camera is to have your favorite images a button press away. The Sony T700 does that and earns a Dave's Pick for it, too... ”

“ If style is your thing then the DSC-T700 could be the camera for you - provided you don't mind shelling out £300 for the privilege. It looks great, for the most part produces good pictures and offers superb internal storage capacity. But it's not the easiest of cameras to operate, and you pay for the slim design and large LCD screen with a shorter battery life... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot T700 has excellent build quality, respectable performance and image quality that will be more than sufficient for most casual snapshot situations. It has some useful and entertaining features, but its primary feature is its style. It is designed to appeal to a very specific kind of person; someone who would happily buy a Bang & Olufsen hi-fi. It’s not the best camera on the market, but it looks like it should be and has a price to match, and for some people that’s what really matters. ... ”

“ An ultra-slim digicam with a 4GB internal memory that provides a portable photo album with storage for up to 40,000 pictures.

The metal body of Sony's DSC-T700 Cyber-shot comes in four fashionable colours: grey, gold, red or silver. This stylish digicam replaces the DSC-T300 but has the same 10.1-megapixel, 6.16 x 4.62mm Super HAD CCD sensor, 3.5-inch touch-screen display and Optical Steady Shot stabilisation. Designed to double as a portable photo album, the T700 has a far larger 4GB internal memory that can store up to 40,000 images at a suitable size for display on the LCD... ”
