“ Near identical to its T500 and T90 predecessors, in terms of screen size and resolution respectively, there is little about the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900 that feels fresh – at least for anyone with prior knowledge of the range. At the end of the day though it is 'just' another point and shoot compact, and one with as much emphasis on fashion as functionality.

Although the touch screen is nice and large and very responsive, it doesn't do anything extra that a smattering of controls wouldn't – except, of course that it allows the camera to sport a large screen whilst remaining compact in its overall proportions. For some, that may be reason enough to purchase the T900.

And, more positively, for all the above though the camera is well constructed and engineered, the screen display crisp and clear. Picture quality is likewise more than acceptable, even if results look crisper, more detailed - and at times more sharply focused - on the camera's LCD than they do when downloaded and examined larger on a desktop PC.

There will always be a market however for a camera that looks good on the outside and, in tandem with the brushed metal faceplate, the touch screen acts as a further gimmick to draw in the punters. It may not revolutionise photography, but for most of its intended audience the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900 should do more than enough... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900 is a good, fast snapshot camera that's also very attractive and extremely compact. Its battery life is a little short, its touch screen won't please everyone, and some will find the photo quality unworthy of the camera's price tag. In this case, though, you're paying for the great design more than for great photos... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900 is a gorgeous camera with some strong points, but also a number of glaring flaws. The camera's most obvious strength is its size and design. At only 2/3 of an inch thick, and with a sleek sliding cover, it's very easy on the eyes. The LCD is wide-screen, 3.5 inches diagonally, and has a razor-sharp 920,000-dot resolution.

In our lab testing, we were pleasantly surprised by the excellent color accuracy and image stabilization, and the image sharpness (though this is partly due to software based sharpening). The rest of the results were less pleasing. At low ISOs it tended to have more image noise than other tested cameras, and the small lens led to significant image distortion and chromatic aberration. The T900 also lacks useful controls and options, most noticeably the ability to take a manual white balance setting or manually control aperture and shutter speed. Even in auto mode, the limited range of shutter speeds and apertures is also a problem. The manual does a poor job of explaining camera functions and how they work. One of our major gripes is the touch-based interface system, which is just that little bit too unresponsive, leaving you wondering if you've hit the proper icon or not. Also, because the icons have to be large enough to press with a finger, there's room for fewer of them on the screen at a time.

If you're in the market for a camera that looks great, is incredibly small, and takes decent photos, then maybe the Sony T900 is for you. We would recommend taking some time to play with the menu system before purchase, though, as it can be quite frustrating. If you have a bit more space in your pocket, the Canon SD970 performs slightly better, and has a much friendlier user interface for the same sticker price... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900 is expensive, but you can see where the money's gone. It's a classy piece of kit that produces good-quality stills and great HD movies. The touchscreen interface works well and the LCD is excellent. If you've got the cash, the T900's certainly got the style... ”

“ There's no question that the Sony Cyber-shot T900 is a superb camera. It's very well made, looks good, and is easy to operate thanks to one of the few good touch-screen interfaces. It has a number of useful and entertaining features, outstandingly fast performance, and produces very good results, especially in low-light social situations. However it's not without some image quality issues, and it is ridiculously overpriced. It's good, it's just not that good... ”

“ Here is yet another smart looking faceplate slider from Sony, this year with even more style and a shutter button zoom toggle. But is that it? Sadly, it is. Not much has changed under the hood, other than a megapixel boost and 720P high-definition video recording. Image quality was even less impressive than last year's Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T700 and the prodigious touch-screen LCD exhibited the same testy behavior as well. At 380 smackers, its difficult to justify the purchase of this little devil dressed in red, but brand loyalists and fashion-conscious consumers will scoop this slim temptation up without a second thought. Oh, the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T900 will sell, no doubt. But don't go crying on the mountain when you find out its image quality and features don't match the camera's looks... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot T900 is a very slim digital camera with a very big touchscreen. The camera is one of the slimmest cameras in the market yet it has a nice 4X zoom lens with optical image stabilization. There’s a huge 3.5 inch touchscreen with good visibility on the back – unfortunately, the camera’s ergonomics suffer, partly due to that huge screen; there’s barely any space for your hands to hold the camera at the back, and you’ll also have to watch out not to block the lens on the front with your fingers too.

The Cyber-shot T900 is just point-and-shoot with no manual controls. The camera has a decent selection of scene modes and Intelligent Scene Recognition which automatically picks a scene mode for you. There are other bells and whistles which can make life a little easier for the casual snapper, such as face detection prioritization for adults/children, face tracking, redeye removal and last but not least, smile shutter – which can automatically take pictures for as long as your subject smiles.

The Sony Cyber-shot T900 has fast performance and a nice selection of playback editing features. The only dislike I have here is continuous shooting performance which, despite being ‘average’ for a 12 megapixel camera, is still quite a bit slower than the previous generation of 10 megapixel compact cameras.

The largest issue with the Sony Cyber-shot T900 is its user interface. The T900’s interface isn’t user friendly and the separated Home and Normal menus just add to the confusion. The touchscreen needs hard presses in order to feel responsive and even changing the most direct of settings requires a minimum of three taps. It doesn’t help matters much if the camera is quick to snap photos but settings are painfully clunky and slow to adjust.

For its 95% run-of-the-mill point and shoot feature set (other cameras have 720p movie modes too) and how it performs, the Sony Cyber-shot T900 is rather pricey. The only things going for the camera are its visual appeal (ultra-slim, stylish design) and huge touchscreen display… if you’re willing to forego the latter, you can get better, less expensive cameras out there. For me, the huge screen, fancy point-and-shoot features and thin design don’t justify the camera’s price, neither do they offset or compensate for the T900’s poor ergonomics, interface usability and so-so image quality... ”

“ For what it is, the $379 DSC-T900 is a solid camera. It has great looks, a terrific touch screen, and takes high-def clips and fine photos with enough light. However, it performs pretty poorly in low light without the flash. For outdoor snapshots, photos of friends with smiling faces, and sheer style, it’s a winner. For those who want to move beyond that, look elsewhere... ”
