“ Overall, the Sony DSC-W170 has several very appealing features that may win over some people, but its image quality doesn't overwhelm. I expected better performance from its 5X optical Carl Zeiss lens. Nevertheless, this camera's interesting features are definitely a draw... ”

“ The Sony Cybershot W170 is a pleasant camera to work with. It's a pity that the image quality did not appear clearly from a technical point of view in a number of situations. This is not a camera for the evening or in difficult light circumstances; it is a good-weather model. It may sound patronizing; however, if you want to make optimal use of the possibilities and obtain the best result, you have to stay away from those aforementioned situations. We hope that the next generation Cyber shot cameras will be so strong-willed, that it will defy the strong demands of the marketing and profile in pure quality whilst leaving the Megapixel race to others. This is what forces us to conclude that the Sony Cybershot DSC-W170 performance is average. Sad, since it seems capable of more. ... ”

“ Sony's highly logical "stepped features" approach means that you get essentially the same camera with just a handful of clear specs differences whichever W model you choose. So is the W170 worth the top-of-the-heap price it commands?

Although it remains an excellent performer and one of the most well-rounded cameras we've had the pleasure of testing, the W170 is actually undermined by its successful and equally competent little brother. In light of the fact that the W150 does basically everything the W170 does (and even does a few things, like continuous shooting, better), and all at a slightly cheaper price, the upgraded camera is hard to justify. Were it not for the W150, we'd be recommending this camera wholeheartedly; as it is, you won't even notice the W170's slight resolution advantage, and everything else is even money as best we can tell.... ”

“ While the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W170 shares almost all of its features with the less expensive W150, the higher resolution 10-megapixel imager and wider view of the 5x zoom justify the extra $50 you'll spend. This is a very capable consumer point-n-shoot, with robust performance, plenty of exposure options, great image quality, and loads of useful and "cool" technologies. With a street price of $299 or less, the Cyber-Shot DSC-W170 offers a good value. If you don't feel the need for 10-megapixel, be sure to check out our review of the 8-megapixel DSC-W150, which offers most all of the same features for a bit less money. ... ”

“ The Sony W170 is a compact bargain, including the hottest technology Sony has introduced in its 2008 lineup. It has a Bionz processor, face detection technology that can tell a child from an adult (and even hold the shutter until they're smiling), High ISO, Super SteadyShot, in-camera editing and an HD output signal.

Like other Sony digicams, it does give away detail to hold onto color at higher ISO settings, but most users won't mind that tradeoff, particularly if 4x6 prints are the game you want to play.

HD output -- particularly when played as a slide show with the built-in special effects and music -- was stunning. But only for stills. This isn't an HD movie camera and to see any HD output from this camera, you'll have to buy an accessory cable, dock, or dock/printer.

But outright, prolonged, standing applause for the big Carl Zeiss lens that starts at a nice 28mm and cranks out to 140mm, more than usual on a digicam zoom. And stay standing for the automatic Macro detection, which means no more switching to Macro mode when you get close.

Despite all the fancy features and the attractive body, what makes the W170 a Dave's Pick is its image quality. Don't take a loupe to these 10.1-megapixel images, but print them and you'll see what we mean. Good color and detail at large print sizes. And that, after all, is what you buy a camera for.... ”
