“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W220 is a good value basic compact with some great features including a 4x optical zoom, face detection, scene recognition and Sony's DRO image enhancement technology. It's a well built camera that feels solidly constructed and provides a variety of easy to use shooting modes all of which provide a degree of control over camera settings at some level, should you want it.

Sadly, the picture quality from the Cyber-shot DSC-W220 is not all it might be. Digital noise is an issue at every ISO setting, and the camera's attempt at minimizing its impact does little to improve things. The noise problem is added to by less than sparkling edge definition and colour fringing.

We'd say these problems cancel out any advantage the Cyber-shot DSC-W220's 12.1 megapixel sensor confers in terms of the ability to produce prints up to A3 size - the noise and other problems will show. But if you rarely make big prints or view all your photo's on screen at a quarter actual size, this may not be such a big deal. Certainly, if you ignore the image quality issue, in every other respect the Cyber-shot DSC-W220 is a very capable budget compact, but if image quality is paramount to you, then the Canon Digital IXUS 95 IS / SD1200 IS is a better bet for the money... ”

“ The Sony Cybershot W220 is a good camera overall - it has a good range of features and specifications that should suit most people. As a point and shoot it has a number of features that make it easier to use, such as a number of scene modes, and even an "EASY" mode. The camera features a slightly wide angle 4x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilisation - this means shots are more likely to come out blur free. The camera also features a good 2.7" screen that works well in the sun, and a good battery life of over 350+ shots. There are some negatives, the camera has small buttons and controls, and I wasn't overly impressed by the shutter release. The Dynamic Range optimisation can also increase noise in unpleasant ways, and the camera uses Sony memory sticks which bumps up the price. Overall though, the camera is good, it offers a number of useful features, has good image quality, with colourful photos, and is offered at a competitive price point... ”

“ Ultimately the new Sony CyberShot DSC-W220 is a fantastic camera for a fantastic price. It comes in at just under $200 and for a few missing features, it isn’t much different than its counterpart. Don’t expect to take Mona Lisa’s with the camera but also don’t think you’re going to be getting anything bad. Sony has always had great products that live up to their name and this one is no exception... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W220 offers a satisfying shooting experience for its sub-$180 price. The W290 is still the better deal, but if you don't mind a somewhat shorter, narrower lens, slightly smaller LCD, and only VGA movie capture, the W220 will save you $70... ”

“ The Sony W220 was a camera that I warmed to the more I used it. I initially was a bit put off by its menu structure, and its very smooth skin made me fear losing my grip on it at an inconvenient moment. Viewed 1:1 on-screen, its images look a little soft, even at its lowest ISO. As I shot with it and made prints from its images, though, I came to like it more and more. As is the case with many high-megapixel consumer cameras these days, the quality of its images when viewed 1:1 on-screen has little to do with how they look when printed. On that score, the Sony W220 did pretty well, and my picture-taking experience with it was quite good. I don't think it's an out-of-the-park home run, but after living with it for a few days, it clearly deserves a Dave's Pick: Most consumer-level users will be happy with the results produced by it... ”
