“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300 is a pretty impressive little digital camera. While it is clearly targeted at photo enthusiasts, with lots of user input into the exposure process and features like full manual exposure and in-camera editing (cropping, fisheye lens and unsharp mask filters, and a Real color mode), this camera also features plenty of auto mode picture making options that will appeal to neophytes and casual photographers. In short, the W300 should appeal to a broad range of users, from beginners to advanced amateurs.

The clunky menu system is somewhat irritating, but most users will quickly learn to use the camera's dedicated controls and avoid the menus whenever possible. Where the W300 really shines is as a portrait, informal portrait, environmental portrait, candid photo, and street shot picture taker. If you've ever fantasized that you were Henri Cartier-Bresson or Robert Doisneau, the W300 may be the compact digital camera for you.... ”

“ As ever with Sony's Cyber-shot range, the DSC-W300 is as much about style as substance. The metal build quality suggests this is a camera that you'll still be using a few years down the line, a feeling backed up by that whopping 13+ megapixel resolution, plus its plentifully large and bright rear LCD (look back at a camera from four or five years ago when 1.5-inches was the norm and find a product looking positively prehistoric). Unfortunately though, while images appear fine when viewed in isolation, anyone who has handled a wide variety of digital compacts as us reviewers are privileged to do will discover that image quality is perhaps the least impressive aspect of the W300. That's a shame, as among its bridge cameras (I'm thinking of the H50) and DSLRs (Alpha 350 at the mid range) Sony has delivered some surprisingly impressive photographic models of late. All that being said, noise is handled very well and shots do require a minimal amount of post processing out of the camera, so in that respect the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300 could be said to be ideally suited to its target market of the undemanding snapper who requires visual aide memoirs delivered with the minimum of fuss.... ”

“ Sony's W-Series digicams have all been compact bargains, packaging the company's hottest technology into attractive cameras that automatically use their innovations so you don't have to remember every trick they can perform.

The Cyber-shot W300 adds a titanium shell, a 13.6 megapixel sensor, ISO 6,400, high speed burst mode and real color mode in addition to the other innovations introduced to the W-Series this year.

But it also improves image quality significantly. Sony has long been noted for giving away detail at high ISO settings to maintain color. But the W300 hangs onto the detail and shows very little noise at ISO 400. It does remarkably well at ISO 3,200 as well, though.

There are really only two significant shortcomings. The first is the 3x optical zoom lens, far shorter than the 5x zoom on the W170. The second is the inexplicable failure of the W-Series in general to provide any kind of zoom in Movie mode.

But if you can live with those limitations, you'll find the Sony Cyber-shot W300 one of the worthier W-Series cameras to earn a Dave's Pick.... ”

“ The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300 is bound to be attractive to a broad range of consumers. It can be used by the novice who requires a fully automatic camera, while more experienced users will appreciate the options of manual control over exposure and other settings. Once you have found your way around the extensive menus and get to know this little tool a bit better, you will find it an excellent companion to record your memories. Functions like adjustment of flash intensity or shadow control; image stabilization or noise reduction, really add to the camera's versatility, although we believe other options like smile detection or some quirky filter effects will not see that much use.

Although operating speed is not the strongest point of this Sony DSC W300, we were very pleased with the overall image quality and its excellent color rendition. All controls are built to last and with its strong, all metal body, we believe this camera will deliver years of trustworthy service. Since the compact arena is a field where competition is fierce, it pays to shop around and see what else is on offer before you commit yourself to any camera in this class. The Sony DSC-W300 however, would certainly deserve a place on your shortlist. ... ”

“ Sony has released a wealth of "W" series models thus far for 2008. These include the DSC-W120, DSC-W130, DSC-W150, DSC-W170, and finally the DSC-W300. They all share most of the same features with the resolution, LCD size and zoom capabilities being the major differences. While the additions of the high-resolution 13-megapixel imager, greater manual control, and addition of saturation, contrast, and sharpness adjustments are welcomed additions, you're paying about US$50 for them. I was a bit disappointed to see that the W300 didn't get the nicer 5x optical zoom that is found on the W150 and W170. However, I still feel the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W300 is an awesome ultra-compact model that features unrivaled resolution capabilities. With a street price of US$349 or less, it offers a good value if you're one who wants all the latest technologies, stuffed in the tiniest of packages. Be sure to check out our reviews of the other models listed above by clicking on their name. ... ”
