“ Sony's "top of the line" entry-level Alpha 350 or DSLR-A350 is an outstanding camera. In this saturated market, consumers really have a lot of great cameras to choose from, all at competitive pricing. At about US$899 or less as tested, I feel the A350 offers a great value for such a well balanced camera. The Live View performance offered by the A350 is way ahead of its competitors. Another feature that helps make this model more appealing is the fact that you have an effective form of Image Stabilization built right in. This will allow you to save some money when buying lenses, where with other models you'll have to spend a nice chunk of change to acquire a stabilized lens to achieve the same level of low-light performance. While we feel this is a great camera, if you don't need 14-meagpixels, a variable angle LCD or Live View, be sure to check out our review of the A350's "little brother", the DSLR-A200. It offers the same overall features, with lower resolution at 10- megapixels, but a slightly faster burst mode. ... ”

“ Sony have certainly hit the ground running in 2008, with three new digital SLR cameras that really deserve to threaten the Canon / Nikon status quo. The A200 model that we reviewed a couple of months ago was a snappy, easy-to-use, entry-level DSLR that we highly recommended. Sony have now built on the success of that camera with the A350, which in many ways is virtually identical, but in certain areas is simply a lot more fun to use. The key feature is the combination of Live View mode and the tilting LCD screen - together they allow you to use the A350 just like a compact camera, held above your head, at arm's length, and even at waist-level. Crucially you won't notice too many differences between shooting using the optical viewfinder or in Live View mode, with auto-focusing being equally responsive in either mode. This is a big advantage over the Sony A350's competitors - simply put, if you're looking for an easy upgrade path from a compact to a DSLR, the A350 is currently the best option on the market. And even if you're a dyed-in-the-wool, traditional DSLR owner who swears by their optical viewfinder, we'll bet that you'll still find a lot of use for the A350's innovative Live View mode.

As for the rest of the camera, thankfully the move up to 14 megapixels hasn't compromised image quality, which is on a par with the excellent images from the 10 megapixel A200 and with the Canon EOS 450D / Rebel XTI and Nikon D60, even at higher ISO speeds. You also get the substantial benefit of built-in image stabilisation system, which means that you won't have to buy expensive stabilized lenses to benefit, as with Canon's and Nikon's systems. At the outset of this review, we asked if the A350 could translate all of its tickbox marketing advantages into real-world performance, and the emphatic answer is yes. If you have no investment in a DSLR system and you're looking to upgrade from a point-and-shoot or cheaper DSLR, the Sony A350 is the logical choice, and it'll also attract some admiring glances from Canon and Nikon owners too. With an aggressively affordable price-tag of less than £500 / $400 with the 18-70mm kit lens, the Sony A350 is a compelling reason to join the DSLR world, and a worthy recipient of our highest Essential!... ”

“ The Sony Alpha A350 is a superb camera, but anyone who was expecting a full professional DSLR like the A700 will be disappointed. Instead you get an A200 with the addition of live view and a massive 14.2-megapixel sensor. The live view system with fully-functioning AF and tilting monitor is much better than all its competitors, although its usefulness is limited by a sensor too dark for daylight use, and the annoying exposure preview that can't be turned off. Image quality and performance are up to standard, as is build quality and design. This is a very appealing camera for the advanced amateur, and an outstanding bargain at the current price.... ”

“ It's certainly a competitively-priced, well-specified camera and one that feels better-constructed than many of its rivals. It's also one that smoothes down the learning curve while still offering a huge step up in all-round performance compared to compact cameras - and one that will satisfy a lot of buyers. Unfortunately, it can't quite compete with the all-round performance the best modern DSLRs are capable of. Had the image quality been of the same standard as the leaders in its class, that would have been enough to award it our highest rating. As it stands, it's a camera we feel too equivocal about to award more than a 'Recommended.'... ”

“ The Sony Alpha DSLR-A350 has a lot going for it. It has an impressive (but not perfect) live view system, image stabilization for every lens you attach, plenty of manual controls, and great battery life. It also has some usability issues that I don't care for, including a small viewfinder, poor LCD visibility outdoors and in low light, and a few too many buttons. In addition, its photos have quite a bit of detail loss at high ISO settings. While other cameras will deliver better photo quality than the A350, none approach its live view capabilities. Thus, it's worth a look if live view is an important feature for you. Since the typical shooter doesn't need 14 Megapixels, I think most folks will be better served by the less expensive DSLR-A300, though.... ”

“ Despite a few issues which will annoy technical photographers, the Alpha A350 is an excellent DSLR with great features and arguably one of the best Live View implementations to date. Given all it offers for the asking price we can easily award it our Highly Recommended rating. Other manufacturers watch out – Sony means business in the DSLR market.... ”

“ Announced shortly after the DSLR-A200 model, Sony's DSLR-A350 offers higher resolution and a variable-angle LCD that supports live view shooting. This makes the camera body slightly thicker and heavier than the A200 - although it's still significantly smaller and lighter than the DSLR-A700. Otherwise the two cameras have almost identical control layouts and functions, although we found the A350's grip slightly more solid and comfortable than the A200's. The review camera was supplied with the new Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA lens, which proved to be a much better performer than the kit lens... ”
