Canon EOS 1000D / Rebel XS

With a 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor and technology inherited from Canon's professional models, the EOS 1000D offers EOS imaging power in an affordable, easy-to-use package.

Canon EOS 1000D

10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor

Take the plunge. Dive into the world of quality photography with the friendly new EOS 1000D. Featuring Canon’s own 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, this new EOS transforms ordinary snaps into sharp, beautifully expressive photographs. The APS-C sensor has a convenient 1.6 conversion ratio and delivers stunning, lifelike images. Its efficient microlens array allows a wide ISO range of 100 to 1600, giving you the freedom to choose the right imaging option depending on environment or subject. Working hand-in-hand with the sensor is Canon’s exclusive DIGIC III imaging processor. Fast, energy-efficient, and powerful, DIGIC III turns out images with natural looking color and smooth gradations. Additionally, on-chip noise reduction vastly improves image quality for long exposures and when shooting at high ISO speeds.

In-lens Image Stabilization

Camera shake is caused by a number of different factors, all with the same predictable result — annoyingly blurry photos. Canon helps solve this problem with IS (Image Stabilizer) lenses. In-lens stabilization is the method of stabilization preferred by amateurs and professionals alike, and can correct camera shake by up to five stops depending on the lens. Additionally, it displays a more stable image in the viewfinder. The EOS 1000D is compatible with the full range of Canon IS lenses, giving you rock-steady support when shooting night scenes or panning, as well as when using slow shutter speeds or telephoto lenses. In-lens image stabilization also aids Live View shooting by noticeably decreasing camera shake visible through the LCD monitor.

Integrated Cleaning System

No other camera reduces dust quite like EOS. Canon’s comprehensive dust-reduction technology, EOS Integrated Cleaning System, is well known for its extraordinary ability to keep the sensor clean. A fully integrated solution that combines measures for both dust prevention and reduction, it greatly decreases the need for servicing. First, the shutter, mirror, and other moving internal parts are designed to generate minimal dust. Next, a Self Cleaning Sensor Unit containing a low-pass filter vibrates to shake off dust. The filter has an anti-static coating to repel dust and is grounded to eliminate static electricity that attracts dust. Lastly, should any dust mar your photos, there is the smart Dust Delete function in bundled Digital Photo Professional software — an easy-to-use tool to reduce the effects of dust.

Auto Lighting Optimiser

Transform dull, underexposed shots into crisp, vivid photographs with Auto Lighting Optimizer. This smart feature examines exposure and contrast at the time of shooting. If an image is too dark or lacks contrast, Auto Lighting Optimizer boosts brightness and contrast to produce more pleasing results. Auto Lighting Optimizer works in AE modes and when shooting with flash. It corrects both underexposed images as well as photos shot in low-contrast environments such as mist or haze. Additionally, it incorporates a face detection function that lightens faces in backlit scenes, making it excellent for obtaining great looking portraits and group shots when shooting into the sun.

3fps Continuous Shooting

The EOS 1000D simply won’t quit. An expanded burst rate up to memory card capacity *1 means you never have to worry about missing a moment — even when shooting JPEGs at up to 3fps. Rapid response is further assured thanks to a snappy 0.1-second startup time *2 so you are always ready to shoot at a moment’s notice. And with maximum shutter speeds of 1/4000 sec. for normal photography and 1/200 sec. for flash, action shots exhibit stunning clarity and sharpness.

*1 Based on Canon test standards using a 2GB SD memory card and shot at ISO 100, using the Standard Picture Style setting. Capacity varies depending on subject, memory card brand, image recording setting, and other variables.
*2 Approximate. Based on CIPA testing standards.

Fast, Precise Autofocus

Canon’s outstanding reputation for its autofocus systems extends to the EOS 1000D. The wide array, seven-point sensor provides excellent focus coverage both horizontally and vertically for any Canon EF lens, and features high sensitivity to maintain focus even in low-light situations. For maximum precision, the center AF point works as a cross-type sensor — a nice touch for maintaining critical focus in important areas of your composition. The EOS 1000D gives you the option to select focus points manually or automatically using one of three different AF modes.

Creative Picture Styles

Give free reign to your creativity with Picture Styles. Six preset settings (Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful, and Monochrome) enhance photos by adjusting sharpness, contrast, saturation, and other image properties to fit your subject or artistic vision. Three other settings accommodate custom styles or Picture Style files downloadable from Canon’s Picture Style web site. Picture Styles can be applied to photos when taking the shot or to RAW images on a computer. For expanding your artistic horizons even further, you can customize Picture Styles by adjusting sharpness, contrast, color saturation, color tone, filter, and toning using Picture Style Editor or in-camera controls. Picture Style Editor also lets you make minute adjustments to specific colors.

Multi-function Self-timer

When you find yourself in front of the camera, you’ll appreciate the EOS 1000D’s flexible self-timer. In addition to standard one-shot mode, you can also set the timer to take from two to ten shots continuously at 3fps. This makes it easy to get just the right shot, especially for group photos. And when using a tripod, a two-second delay setting helps reduce camera vibration for optimum image clarity at slow shutter speeds.

Live View Function

Take advantage of the big, bright 2.5-inch LCD monitor to compose photos with Live View shooting. This convenient alternative to the viewfinder is almost like using a compact digital camera. It is particularly suited for low- and high-angle shots or when using a tripod. Live View shooting is also great for verifying exposure and depth of field, giving you the opportunity to confirm both on the monitor before taking the picture. For compositions requiring close inspection, you can zoom 5x or 10x to check focus and other critical details. Two autofocus modes are available for Live View shooting. In rapidly changing environments, a quick autofocus mode lets you capture all the action with only a brief blackout between shots by accelerating autofocus response (Quick mode). Another easily selected mode allows uninterrupted viewing (Live mode) while shooting. And for advanced users, there is Remote Live View shooting, which lets you control the EOS 1000D from a computer running bundled EOS Utility software.

Note: Autofocusing may be difficult or take time depending on subject and lens. If this occurs, focus manually or use Quick mode to focus.

SD Card-compatible

A wonderfully compact and lightweight design — the lightest in the EOS DIGITAL series — makes the EOS 1000D an easy take-along companion for all your outings. Its diminutive size does not hinder usability, however, as it maintains the same intuitive operability for which EOS is renowned. Additionally, compatibility with popular SD cards and high-capacity SDHC cards lets you move up to the world of EOS and still use memory cards from your current compact digital camera. To prevent loss of photos, the EOS 1000D automatically stops writing data should you accidentally open the memory card cover while images are being saved, resuming once the cover is closed. And for added security, a low-level format option is available which completely erases memory cards.

Universal EOS Design

Experience high quality digital photography minus the hassle. The EOS 1000D’s uncomplicated, gimmick-free design invites you to pick it up and start shooting immediately. Controls and markings have been enlarged, resulting in a thicker Mode Dial and larger Cross keys. Additionally, the tall, newly designed rubber grip and rear anti-slip thumb brace assure a firm, positive grip even when operating one-handed. To assure precise composition, viewfinder coverage is a spacious 95%. And for added convenience, camera settings are displayed in the viewfinder and can also be shown on the LCD monitor.

Confortably Customizable

The EOS 1000D is more than what meets the eye. It comes with 12 Custom Functions that increase your shooting and imaging options. Turn noise reduction on for long exposures or when shooting at high ISO settings, enable Auto Lighting Optimizer for better looking photos, or program the SET button to perform a variety of operations. These and other Custom Functions are easily accessed through an intuitive interface that lets you change settings in seconds. Further enhancing versatility is My Menu. This is a screen containing up to six frequently used menu items and Custom Functions. My Menu eliminates time spent wading through layers of sub-menus to access the items you want. For added convenience, it can be the first screen that appears when you press the Menu button. You can also use bundled EOS Utility to register My Menu settings from a computer.
