FEATURES

10.1 megapixel APS-H sized CMOS sensor

Canon's new original large area CMOS sensor delivers striking image quality while processing a Canon EOS-1D Mark IIImassive volume of image data via 8-channel reading that enables an ultra-fast 10fps continuous shooting speed. The APS-H size sensor, with a remarkable image size of 28.1 x 18.7mm, features an outstanding effective resolution of approximately 10.1 million pixels and a wider standard ISO range (100–3200). The top ISO speed of 3200, highest of the EOS DIGITAL SLRs, has been reached by enhanced light-gathering/light-reception efficiency. Owing to the wide dynamic range, the sensor precisely captures nuances of light and color for images with smooth gradation, while comprehensive dust reduction throughout the unit assures even greater image clarity. Natural framing is enabled with an effective angle of view approx. 1.3 times the focal length of Canon EF lenses. Moreover, enhanced noise reduction technology including an advanced on-chip noise reduction circuit efficiently lowers noise for shooting performance at a high S/N ratio. And despite the sensor size, overall processing efficiency in the EOS-1D Mark III also keeps power consumption minimal. Advances like these make this camera the model answer to professional needs.

Note: All references to ISO sensitivity are based on Recommended Exposure Index.

Dual "Digic III" imaging processor

DIGIC III is the latest state-of-the-art image processor from Canon, offering fine Canon EOS-1D Mark IIIdetail and natural color with ultra-fast performance. To handle the enormous volume of data generated by the 10.1-megapixel sensor and world-class 10fps continuous shooting, the Dual “DIGIC III” has been integrated for dual core processing. EOS-1D Mark III technology makes a high-speed connection between two chips to transfer more data at a faster rate, with greater throughput. This high processing efficiency not only extends battery life but also enables a speedier interface for writing to memory cards. Highlight gradation, set by Custom Function (C. Fn) II-3 , is improved for blowout suppression and smoother transition from grays to highlights by extending the bright side of the dynamic range in approx. one-step increments. DIGIC III noise reduction may be adjusted for all ISO speeds via C. Fn II-2 , but is particularly effective for high speeds and shadow areas captured in low light conditions.

14 bit A/D conversion

The EOS-1D Mark III takes imaging to another level, beyond the previous 12-bit (4,096 tones) benchmark for EOS DSLRs. Conversion of analog to digital signals now executed by a 14-bit processor (16, 384 tones) generates digital data of fine gradation without tonal skipping. Canon's proprietary RAW and new small RAW (sRAW) image types offer superior quality with rich 14-bit gradation and can be processed with bundled software. JPEG images with 8 bits per color derived from 14-bit data are provided four sizes (L/M1/M2/S), which also are available during simultaneous writing of RAW and JPEG data.

Distinct image recording now with sRAW

Canon EOS-1D Mark IIIAbout one-fourth the pixel count of a RAW image, Canon's new 2.5-megapixel sRAW image type offers particular advantages. It enables more memory card storage than other image types as well as album storage on a PC. sRAW images — about half the size of RAW images — are eminently suited for e-mailing and now can be directly printed from the EOS-1D Mark III, a new feature. Images are recorded as JPEG and RAW/sRAW or all three simultaneously with unmatched quality control. JPEG, ideal when reduced image size is needed, has 10 compression ratios. Canon's RAW image type implements lossless data compression without sacrificing precise detailing. With such distinct image recording choices, the EOS-1D Mark III delivers the image you want from the shots you take.

Media support CF/SD cards

Offering a variety of media for optimal image recording, SDHC-compatible EOS-1D Mark III has two memory card slots to record images on a CF card, SD memory card, or both at the Canon EOS-1D Mark IIIsame time. With the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2/E2A and USB external media attached, you can also record the same image on both cards simultaneously and to external media. Or choose the separate recording feature and the same captured image can be recorded in different image types or sizes onto different media including external media. For example, you can simultaneously record RAW images on the CF card and JPEG images on the SD card (or vice versa) in different sizes. Automatic switching from one card slot to another during recording assures uninterrupted shooting. By selecting an image, folder or all images in a particular media via the image copying function, any image stored in a memory card or external media can be copied to another recording media. With the new external media backup function, all images stored in the DCIM folder in the CF card or SD card can be easily copied via the Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2/E2A. And thanks to Dual “DIGIC III” processing, EOS-1D Mark III recording and memory card writing is smoother and faster than ever.
Note: Compatibility varies depending on external storage media.

New 3.0-inch TFT monitor

Canon EOS-1D Mark IIIDesigned to simplify and speed up focusing and image confirmation, the EOS-1D Mark III's new and larger LCD offers enhanced brightness with low power consumption plus easier viewing. Seven brightness levels instead of the conventional five make this LCD more adaptable to the outdoors and different environments. At maximum brightness, for example, images are easier to see in highly lit outdoor settings. Uniform brightness over the whole 230,000-pixel screen and the wide 140-degree viewing angle allow for clear observation from almost any angle in sunshine or in shadow. With such user-friendly dimensions, larger text and menus are enabled for smoother selection and input.

Playback conveniences

For smooth image manipulation and review, the EOS-1D Mark III offers new advances in playback and display functionality. Info display options provide a single image with image size as well as simultaneous display of the RGB and brightness histograms in the histogram display menu. Highlight warning and AF points may be set for display, along with choices including a four- or nine-image index and jumping for 1, 10, or 100 images as well as by screen, shooting date, or folder. For added convenience and worry-free handling, users now can checkmark the menu for images they want to erase and then erase them all at once.

ISO speed

For freedom to configure light sensitivity in response to shooting conditions, professionals will surely appreciate the wider-ranging standard ISO speeds of the EOS-1D Mark III, from 100–3200. ISO sensitivity is displayed in the viewfinder as well as top LCD for user-friendly adjustment and fewer missed opportunities.

Canon EOS-1D Mark III

Settings are selectable in 1/3- or whole-stop increments and may be set as low as 50 or as high as 6400 through the ISO expansion menu. Combining high ISO speed with a high shutter speed, the EOS-1D Mark III produces blur-free photos even when assignments or shoots involve dark settings.
Note: All references to ISO sensitivity are based on Recommended Exposure Index.

White balance

Six white balance mode presets and various WB settings employing advanced Canon algorithms assure highly faithful reproduction of natural colors in just about any kind of lighting. Up to five custom WB data settings can be registered when shooting or when selecting images stored in memory cards. In addition to these choices, five custom WB settings for personal white balance can be registered via bundled software. Finally, for absolute accuracy whether shooting at dawn or dusk, the EOS-1D Mark III introduces a broader range of color temperature settings, from 2500K to 10,000K in 100k increments.

WB correction / bracketing

WB bracketing for precise image control on the EOS-1D Mark III creates three bracketed images with a single shutter release by shifting the white balance by up to ±3 levels from the value set in the current WB mode. Furthermore, images can be bracketed to a magenta/green or blue/amber bias. Increased image control and enhanced operation ease also come from WB compensation that allows adjustment of blue/amber and magenta/green biases in ±9 steps, as well as combined use of color temperature conversion and color compensation filters.

Continuous shooting

Photo opportunities can disappear in the blink of an eye. That's why Canon refined the EOS-1D Mark III's image processing with 8-channel reading and optimized its shooting sequence — to get more shots per burst than any AF digital SLR in the world.* The result is a blazing 10fps continuous shooting speed with 110 Large JPEG shots per burst and 30 RAW shots per burst**. Response also is enhanced by a startup time of approximately 0.2 sec. and a minimal shutter release time lag of 55ms, 40ms using Custom Function. What's more, the new shutter has a maximum speed of 1/8000 sec. and high speed X-sync at 1/300 sec***. Professionals who want shooting performance without the usual noise will also welcome the addition of the new silent single shooting function in drive mode, which greatly minimizes shutter and reflex mirror noise.
* As of February 2007, as a digital SLR camera.
** Based on Canon's testing standards using JPEG quality 8, ISO 100, and Standard Picture Style with a 1GB CF card. These figures vary depending on the subject, memory card brand, ISO speed, drive mode, Picture Style, and other factors.
*** X-sync at 1/250 sec. when not using EX-series Speedlites.

AF system

For the flexibility needed for creative expression, the EOS-1D Mark III introduces a new high-speed and high-precision area AF sensor with 19 high-precision cross-type AF points plus 26 Assist AF points for fast and accurate focus detection. In addition, the AF point area is expandable during manual AF point selection. Higher precision focusing with 19 AF points is realized even while using lenses brighter than f/2.8. Furthermore, the EOS-1D Mark III can be used in dark shooting conditions because of the newly extended low brightness range. To enable the extraordinary 10fps continuous shooting speed, AF sensor signal reading is even faster thanks to further enhanced AI Servo. Moreover, easily customizable AI Servo's 1st/2nd image priority ( C. Fn III-3 ) — allowing focus or shutter release priority for the first and following shots — has the advanced capability press photographers require to capture dramatic moments. And this function can be set to change operation characteristics with a single press of the shutter. With AI Servo AF tracking method ( C. Fn III-4 ), professionals can select the most effective AI Servo priority for their needs. Such capability enables quick adjustment for a variety of compositions and demanding shooting situations.

Large viewfinder

A large viewfinder is essential to composition before image capture and is, in fact, where images are created. For crisper, larger, and easier viewing, the EOS-1D Mark III viewfinder has been redesigned for approx. 100% coverage and approx. 0.76x magnification. Information like metering mode, ISO speed, and battery level are always displayed, as are RAW shooting and FE lock indicators. In addition to featuring good background blur, the new standard Focusing Screen Laser Matte Ec-C IV offers easy determination of the precise point of sharpest focus (during manual focusing) as well as monitor brightness — all adding up to the remarkable performance demanded by professionals.

Metering and exposure control

For trouble-free metering and fine-tuned exposure control, the newly designed metering sensor has 63 zones linked to the 19 cross-type AF points on the AF sensor. Incorporating Canon's advanced metering algorithms, stable flash and standard metering are achieved with less reliance on subject or scene. Precise and responsive shooting without the fuss of extensive adjustment is assured with four metering modes, along with multiple spot metering and AF-point linked spot metering. In addition to five shooting modes, the camera assists the photographer by automatically shifting ISO speed within the 100–3200 range to obtain the best exposure possible.

Custom functions

A total of 57 Custom Functions consolidates Personal Functions of the earlier EOS-1D series and increases options to capture the scene you want with style and enhanced ease of use — all at the touch of a button and/or dial. Three sets of functions may be registered and applied in the EOS-1D Mark III, each set suited to a genre like sports or landscape. New and improved AF-related Custom Functions offer AF Microadjustment for up to 20 lens types ( C. Fn III-7 ), AF point area expansion ( C. Fn III-8 ), AI Servo AF tracking ( C. Fn III-4 ), and AI Servo 1st/2nd image priority ( C. Fn III-3 ). Added conveniences include increasing AF points with Assist AF points and AI Servo AF functionality that treats a subject suddenly entering the frame as focusable or ignorable. Choosing between focus or release priorities helps create the scene you aim for. Press photographers hoping to catch a fleeting moment, for example, can choose shutter-release priority where continuous shooting speed is important.
Functions related to image processing include highlight tone priority ( C. Fn II-3 ) and long exposure noise reduction ( C. Fn II-1 ) for rich, smooth gradations with minimal noise for images captured in low light conditions. Among functions for operation ease is one for INFO button display of camera settings when shooting ( C. Fn II-9 ). And while shooting functions are displayed via INFO button, pressing the AF point selection button also lets you choose an AF point on the LCD monitor. Handling ease also comes from the WB + media/image size setting ( C. Fn IV-8 ), where white balance, memory card, and image size can be set via menu screen or rear LCD when the camera is ready to shoot. For photos created with your distinct style and personal touch, Canon gives you several choice menus in the EOS-1D Mark III.

Dust-reduction measures

In the EOS-1D Mark III, Canon has taken three specific countermeasures to dust for spotless Canon EOS-1D Mark IIIphoto results: suppression of dust generation, reduction of dust adhesion, and removal of dust. Improvements to body cap, shutter unit, and other structures employing dust-resistant material assure less dust is generated. A remarkable new feature, the Self Cleaning Sensor Unit vibrates the infrared-absorbing glass located in front of the low-pass filter to remove dust particles from the APS-H-sized imaging sensor while its anti-static surface further reduces adhesion. In addition to these measures, by targeting image data for leftover dust after cleaning, the Dust Delete Function within the bundled software can be used after shooting to lessen dust spots that may remain on the captured image.

Operation easy

Maintaining the exceptional user-friendly layout and handling ease of EOS professional models, the EOS-1D Mark III offers fast, intuitive operation. Press any button and it stays active while you turn a dial to desired settings. Turn the Quick Control Dial to a selection and fix it with the SET button. What could be simpler? The new AF start button executes AF selection and metering, while turning the Quick Control or Main Dial to any one of 19 AF point gets you in focus. Yet another handy addition is the separate ISO button for precision shooting. The new "My Menu" function enables registry of up to 6 frequently used menu options and Custom Functions. Finally, for ubiquitous command of digital UI, the Multi-controller provides additional camera control modifications.

New battery pack

Today's DSLRs demand a lot of power for color LCDs, image sensors and more. Offering Canon EOS-1D Mark IIIthe long-lasting and large capacity of 2300 mAh for shooting approx. 2,200 images at normal temperature, the dedicated lithium-ion Battery Pack LP-E4 inside the EOS-1D Mark III meets this demand to keep you shooting stronger and longer. The three-celled smart battery, smaller and lighter than most in its class, “talks” to the camera with information on power source type, remaining capacity, shutter count, and recharge status — all viewed on the Battery Info menu. Another advantage of the lithium-ion battery is the absence of memory effect that causes other rechargeable types like NiCad to gradually lose maximum energy capacity through repeated partial discharging before being fully recharged. In other words, the EOS-1D Mark III and its battery are remarkably tolerant of frequent “top-up” charging. With the Battery Pack LP-E4, Battery Charger LC-E4, and AC Adapter Kit ACK-E4, this power source system delivers long-lasting energy to drive the new-generation EOS-1D cameras.

High-end capacity also is seen in the Battery Charger LC-E4 built for two, taking about 120 minutes to recharge one battery pack. Configured for calibration, the LC-E4 can be used to check recharge status. Another convenience is compatibility with DC power to enable car battery recharge with optional Car Battery Cable CB-570. For charging via household current, the AC Adapter Kit ACK-E4 includes adapter, power cord, and DC coupler with a DC cord that prevents accidental disconnection.

EF lenses

The EOS-1D Mark III is fully compatible with Canon's world-renowned professional EF lenses (except the EF-S series). The lineup now includes over 50 models, ranging from 14mm ultra-wide-angle to 600mm super-telephoto, meeting various professional needs smoothly and smartly. When mounted, Canon's intelligent EF lenses communicate f-number, focal length, and other data to the camera for fast, precise operation. With sophisticated optical know-how and micron precision engineering, Canon offers such advances as microcomputer controlled image stabilization, silent operation via ultrasonic motor plus lenses like fluorite, Ultra Low Dispersion (UD), and Super UD. Image stability is further realized by the IS lens lineup (zoom and single focal-length lenses), featuring functionality that not only suppresses blurry images from camera shake but also helps you take natural animal photos as though they are in the wild. New to the EF lens lineup is EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM, a dust- and water-resistant zoom lens designed for improved peripheral image quality in wide-angle shooting. Advantages include optimized lens coatings and lens disposition for superior color balance and minimal flare/ghosting, plus a circular aperture for beautiful out-of-focus images. Precise contrast and image resolution without color bleed are enabled by aberration and chromatic correction from aspherical and UD lens elements, respectively. These optical and mechanical advantages are further assured by new measures like AF algorithms that enable fast and quiet autofocusing.

Flash

The Speedlite 580EX II is Canon's flagship flash unit that delivers the high performance and reliability professionals have come to expect. It is fully E-TTL II-compatible with the EOS-1D Canon EOS-1D Mark IIIMark III and retains the superior features of the EX series. Higher dust- and water-resistance are enhancements that offer more reasons to rely on this flash unit, a feature developed in conjunction with the new Compact Battery Pack CP-E4, Off-Camera Shoe Cord OC-E3, and the camera's hot shoe. Resistance to dust and water are highly assured with sealed surfaces for enhanced external component connection and elimination of the slide switch. Peripherals like the OC-E3 are also made dust- and water-resistant. Use of stronger material in the camera shoe and mounting foot plus other improvements add up to improved contact reliability. Operation is made even more user-friendly with flash settings now manipulated from the camera's menu screen (“External Speedlite control”) and the TFT monitor used to input them from the menu.

Handling ease is further seen in the Quick-Lock System, which holds both flash and camera steady by locking or releasing the Speedlite 580EX II simply with a mounting foot lock lever. Further enhancements include modification of the battery cover and a 20% reduction in recycling time. Battery cover construction is now vertically hinged for greater reliability and ease, and a locking mechanism now prevents sudden opening of the compartment. All these new features, plus silent recycling enabled by Canon technology, mean that professionals have more reasons to rely on the Speedlite user-interfaces.
