Canon EOS 20Da

EOS 20Da digital SLR optimised for astrophotography. Based on the popular EOS 20D camera and joining it as a companion model in Canon's product line, the new EOS 20Da digital SLR specifically addresses the needs of astrophotography with features such as a live preview on the LCD monitor and a modified low-pass filter optimised for photographing the night sky in brilliant detail .

Canon EOS 20Da

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FEATURES

Large CMOS sensor with effective 8.2-megapixel resolution

The large APS-C (22.5 x 15.0mm) 8.2 megapixel CMOS sensor with square (6.4 x 6.4µm) imaging elements enables high-quality reproduction of starry skies. This is the same renowned sensor featured on the EOS 20D and delivers the same bold, brilliant image quality. Its optimized photodiodes, together with an advanced imaging processor, realize exceptional image quality throughout the extensive ISO speed range of 100 to 1600 (plus ISO 3200 in extended mode). Moreover, Canon's proprietary color filter and on-chip microlenses ensure highly efficient light convergence.

The 3:2 aspect ratio of the CMOS sensor is the same as for conventional 35mm film cameras*, allowing experienced photographers to simply follow their instincts when framing images instead of concerning themselves with the differences of digital cameras.

* 35mm-equivalent focal length is approx.1.6 times the focal length indicated on the EF lens.

Hydrogen-alpha light sensitivity optimized for astrophotography

Optical characteristics of the EOS 20Da have been optimized for astrophotography. The new infrared filter in the low-pass filter, for example, is comprised of three liquid crystal layers with different optical axes and features approximately 2.5 times higher hydrogen-alpha light sensitivity than in the EOS 20D. Reddish diffuse nebulae are clearly captured as a result — without the use of additional filters.

* The wavelength of hydrogen-alpha light is 656nm (656/1,000,000,000m).

Low noise even with long exposures at high ISO settings

Canon's second-generation on-chip noise reduction circuit lessens random noise and eliminates fixed pattern noise, resulting in images that are remarkably clear even when shooting at high ISO speeds. An optimized CMOS control system further reduces noise during long exposures.

“Live View” simplifies focusing via LCD monitor

Canon EOS 20DaConventional SLR cameras, whether digital or film-based, feature a quick-return mirror that temporarily renders the viewfinder blank when the shutter is released. The EOS 20Da, however, can lock the mirror to continuously display the live image on the built-in LCD monitor at the user's choice of 5x or 10x LCD magnification.

This unique Live View mode helps achieve accurate manual focusing more easily than with conventional SLR viewfinders.

High-speed DIGIC II imaging engine delivers highly accurate color

Canon EOS 20DaCanon's DIGIC II imaging engine, acclaimed for its natural color reproduction, now offers more accurate color reproduction of bright, highly saturated images. Areas of high contrast are accurately reproduced and an extended dynamic range ensures smooth gradations throughout the image, from highlights to shadows. Power consumption is also reduced in this high-speed imaging engine.

Fully compatible with all EF lenses and various EOS accessories

Lens quality is critical in astrophotography, since even subtle lens aberrations can cause uneven distribution and distortion of light when shooting small points at infinite distances. Fortunately, EOS 20Da users can take advantage of Canon's professional lineup of over 50 EF lenses*. The L (Luxury) lens series, in particular, offers supremely refined optics highly recommended for astrophotography. This series exhibits exceptional fidelity, operational ease and environmental resistance due to finely ground aspheric lenses and special optical materials such as fluorite.

Canon EOS 20DaAstrophotographers can also benefit from various EOS accessories such as Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3**, which allows the setting of exposure time, Angle Finder C** for shooting skies from a low camera position, and Battery Grip BG-E2**, which supports large-capacity batteries designed for the EOS 20D.

* Focus cannot be adjusted manually in “Live View” mode when using the following lenses, which employ electronic manual focusing:
EF50mm f/1.0L USM, EF85mm f/1.2L USM, EF200mm f/1.8L USM,
EF300mm f/2.8L USM, EF400mm f/2.8L USM, EF400mm f/2.8L ll USM,
EF500mm f/4.5L USM, EF600mm f/4L USM, EF1200mm f/5.6L USM,
EF28-80mm f/2.8-4L USM

Software

EOS 20Da is supplied with Canon EOS Solution Disk 9.1, containing EOS Viewer Utility 1.2, EOS Capture v1.2 and PhotoStitch 3.1. Canon Digital Photo Professional v1.6 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 is included to allow comprehensive image manipulation when needed.

EOS Capture v1.2 is a remote capture and control application for when the camera is tethered to a computer. It provides automated sequential control of the shutter release and download of images to the computer. The EOS 20Da is supplied with the AC adapter kit ACK-E2 as standard to allow the camera to be operated for long periods on AC power.

Digital Photo Professional v1.6 provides high-speed processing of lossless RAW images, and allows real-time display and immediate application of adjustments to images. The software includes a wide array of RAW, TIFF or JPEG image editing functions, which give control over variables such as white balance, dynamic range, exposure compensation and colour tone. The camera JPEG images can be recorded in sRGB or Adobe RGB colour space, and the Digital Photo Professional application supports sRGB, Adobe RGB and Wide Gamut RGB colour spaces. An ICC (International Colour Consortium) profile attaches automatically to RAW images converted to TIFF or JPEG images. This allows faithful reproduction of colours in software applications that support ICC profiles, such as Adobe Photoshop. Image processing of various parameter changes can now be batched rather than carried out sequentially, vastly increasing the efficiency when applying a number of changes to the same images.

The EOS 20Da includes membership of Canon's online photo album, CANON iMAGE GATEWAY with 100MB of space for image uploads and photo sharing.
