A great camera with top notch built quality, but not upto the current technology. 10 MP is already at the brink of being 'obsolete' in the next few months. The live view is slow to autofocus and no match for Nikon D300. 7-8MP for a point & shoot, and 10-14MP for a DSLR is the best compromise in terms of speed, resolution and noise at the present time. Further improvements would require increase in the sensor size. I think the Canon EOS 40D has arrived a year too late.

That's a professional, as in I SOMETIMES get paid to shoot (weddings) - NOT as in I make my entire living, from photography (dream on!).
This is NOT a 20d or a 30D. This is a new cam that happens to resemble it's predecessors, and that, no doubt, because the "SLR" look is required, or so they believe. For my part (if I have one) I've often wondered why papa son Canon does back-flips to make the new stuff resemble the old stuff soooo closely... ???
Now, perception is... well, it is the single key, that will open the greatest number of locks! But we don't have to delve that deeply into perception, in order to see how different values produce different opinions. What you want (or value) certainly will cause your opinion of the 40D (and everything else, for that matter) to differ, from mine. There are no facts, only perceptions...

I switched from Minolta with my purchase of the Canon 20D and continued with Canon to the 30D and now the 40D. I have had the 40D for about 3 weeks and have not been nearly as pleased with it as the two previous cameras I owned. I do not find the picture quality to be as clear or sharp as the 20D or 30D. I am interchanging the lenses on the bodies and repeating pictures first using the 30D and later the 40D. I find the a clearer focus on the 30D. Needless to say, this has been disappointing. I think I will send the camera back to Canon to be sure it is not a dud. Knowing what I know now, I would not buy this camera again. If this were my first Canon experience, I would switch to Nikon.

A very solid, well constructed camera. Good feel unlike D-Rebel. Large LCD is a big plus due larger text. More image info displayed. AF is fast and accurate. Photo quality is excellent. I like the addition of ISO value to the viewfinder. All in all this is a great camera.
Problems:
Constantly wiping off smudges from the large LCD caused by contact with face. No a problem with 20 or 30D LCD’s

I thought my 20D was a very good camera. After 3 years upgraded to the 40D. The 40D is fantastic, it takes great pictures.
