Canon is following the wait-and-see strategy. For some time, Canon has been rumoured to be working on a compact camera using the APS-C sensor (and so is Nikon), and I expect that they will come out with one if the EP-1 and the GF-1 turn out to be a sustained sales success (as opposed to the initial flurry of interest that greets anything that's new and different). With the G11, Canon is in a different ball game, and it promises to be an excellent camera that improves on the G10 in some important ways. Its closest competitor is the LX-3, and it'll be interesting to see what Panasonic comes up with as a successor to that camera. But it looks like we won't find out until next year...

I've owned several of the G cameras: G1, G5, G6 and G9. The G11 I've used isn't mine, but is one floating around my workplace. For a long time, I viewed the G-cameras as the only serious game in town for their segment, although I've since been seduced by Panasonic's LX3. With the G11, Canon has taken a more rational approach to the high-end enthusiast's compact. The pixel count isn't the deciding factor in image quality - pixel size and image processing is. The G11 has visibly superior noise suppression to my G9; the only area where it isn't quite in the same league with my LX3 is in lens speed. On the other hand, the G11 has some worthy feature that I miss on the Panasonic. I always appreciated the swing and swivel screen as being a godsend for shooting high or low angle shots, great for street shooting, pets, children and architecture. It made using the early G models a pleasure, so I was really annoyed when it disappeared with the G7 model. I also appreciate the longer telephoto reach (try G11's lens online at: http://www.infoborder.com/Digital_Camera_Test/Cano ... ) compared to the LX3, although in truth, 28mm isn't quite wide enough for my needs. Finally, I have to give Canon a nod for getting its accessories to market on time. I've been waiting for over a year for the LX3 case and 19mm to become available in the States. Will I buy a G11 for myself? Probably not, although I enjoy using the office camera. But I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Ok I bought myself a G11 today and have got to play with it untill the battery died. My first impressions are mostly good. The camera is well built, feels strong in hand and the features are mostly easily usable. The wheel and the buttons on it are a bit small so large-fingered people should be aware a bit. I had a bit of a hassle but nothing terrible. I was surprised to find a leather finish on the camera but it feels nice and helps with the grip . The other place i'm not so sure about is the screen, color is nice but because it's variangle has made it a bit chunky for fingers to get hold of the camera. Also i might add that it doesn't feel that strong so i would be a bit more careful when giving it pushing tasks. The other thing about the lcd is that it stains quite easily but it can be cleaed out with micro-fibre cloth (not included).
I was a bit shocked not to find a HDMI cable in the box as it was advertised to have HDMI capability but apparently not out of the box.
The image quality seen so far is quite good. I love the high-iso capability. Images are nice up to iso400 and can be used up to iso1600, though it lose some detail there. 3200 is for desperate people only..
I was a bit surprised by the functioning of the auto mode because it uses up to iso800 automatically and likes to go to shake-dangerous low shutter speeds but who uses auto on G11 anyway?
It's a perfect tool for people who like to shoot pictures but carrying a big SLR is not their style. It feels firm in hand and get's the job done in most cases. Maybe, but just maybe i'd like it to have a bit more focal lenght.
I'm actually a bit worried about the quality of the JPG images because the size of them was suspiciously light. I'm interested to see if i can get some more detail with RAW as soon as my battery recharges.
Basically i'm happy with it, waiting for the battery to recharge so i could abutse it a bit more. Definately going to buy an extra one in the upcoming days.
