I fell in love with the S90 a few months back, practically ditching my Canon 5D Mk II whenever I needed a quick shot. I started opting to travel light with only my S90 instead of lugging around the SLR and think I'm almost getting better shots. I've had the S95 for only a day now (I doubt anyone has had it any longer!), but improvements to the placement and function of the buttons, as well as access to the cable ports, is all considered and beautifully executed. The model designation is also more matte and subtle which seems like a new trend for Canon. I purchased a G11 back in May to be my always with me camera when not carrying my huge dSLR (5DM2 with grip). Quite frankly I loved the G11 but it was too big to just throw in my pocket, and I secretly wanted an S90 for the same purpose. Then in August 2010 Canon announced the S95 which dealt with many of the gripes folks have with the S90 and so I immediately pre-ordered one and put the G11 up for sale. I could not be happier with my decision. Image quality is outstanding with the camera, as S90 owners can attest to, but the physical quality and the ease of use is fantastic. I love the weight of the camera, the matte finish and the dials are top notch. I really look forward to having this camera at the ready at *all* times! Bonus tip: For those of you who can't import the RAW files due to the inevitable lage between release and 3rd party support, simply shoot in RAW + JPEG for now, and then delete the JPEGs later on when RAW is fully supported by your application of choice. My G10 was too big, and the image quality never really impressed me - too many pixels and noise. It sat in a drawer at home. This S95 is amazing! Image quality rivals my DSLR bodies. I use a 7D and 5D with L lenses. I can't carry those monsters with me all the time. The S95 will be with me always. The video is MUCH better than the G10 (and probably the G11) but Im sure the the G12 will beat it. Still, the small size is what matters most to me. The display on the back is gorgeous. There are some special effects that are a lot of fun - especially the "miniature" vintage and HDR presets. The (HD!) video is great. I could see using this a point of view on a video shoot. Due to it's small size it could go anywhere. Attach it to a bike helmet or a guitar. Buy it. I recommend this camera to everyone. You can obsess with all the comparisons and features, or you can grab one and join the fun today. Another review gave it one star. I don't get that. (?) What would improve it? Wider angle of 24mm would be cool, and more presets too. Preset could be added with a firmware update. I am traveling to California next week and may leave the DSLRs at home. It's that good. Negron Rating:    2 cameras, both had hot pixels in video I just wanted to point out I've received 2 of these and they both have had hot pixels in video mode, at least that is when it was most noticeable. They hot pixels (red in this case) were visible after replaying on the PC which points to a sensor issue. Please check yours when you get it. I will wait a while before I order another one, in case its a batch production problem. Otherwise most everything is an improvement over the previous model which I owned as well. Take this with a grain of salt, but I've also felt that the pictures from this camera are a bit softer than they were on my S90. Date: 2010-11-22 - 15:28:21 Author: Socalhawg Rating:    Great pocket camera I got the S95 about 2 weeks ago and so far I really like it, it replaces my SD870is, I got this camera to use when my T2i is less convenient to carry with me, the quality fit and finish is very good, and has new features (special effects etc.) that I have to learn about, having said that, I find that because Canon does not include a owners manual it's a real inconvenience to download and print 200 pages of text, at $400 the book should have been in the box, my other complaint is that the wrist strap does not have a plastic slider to keep the camera from falling off your arm, so the stock strap had to be replaced, other than that I would recomend it. When I was looking for a new camera a few weeks ago I wanted one that offered more than just the standard point and shoot features but also one that I could easily carry in my pocket. I was torn between the S95 and the LX5 (Panasonic). The S95 won me over and here is why. First, the LX5 is not exactly "compact" but the S95 is the perfect size. It fits nicely in my front pants pocket, not to mention the finish on the camera is not slick so you can easily grip it without worrying about dropping it. The second thing I wanted was to be able to take good depth of field shots. I'm not a camera guru, but I know a little and the basic point and shoot just does not offer this and if it does I promise it's not as easy to use nor as good of quality as the S95. Next is the HD video. I took about 5 video's at a karaoke bar last night and they are awesome. I have an 8GB SD card which according to the camera can record over 50 minutes of HD (720) video. Also, when taking action shots just using the AUTO setting on the camera, the pictures turn out amazing. The ring function is probably another major reason I chose the S95. You can use it to zoom or change any of the settings (e.g., aperture) just by turning it. No need to go through the menu settings etc. The S95 is also a solid camera. You can tell this by just looking at the parts used and feeling the camera itself. I don't feel like I'm going to break it if that makes any sense. For the money you get a lot with this camera. I bought this camera on launch day after reading the glowing reviews of its predecessor, the S90, and seeing that all of the complaints about that camera were fixed in this new S95 model. I received the camera 2 days before a 2 week trip overseas to Scotland and on pure faith I left the DSLR at home and just took this Canon. I was absolutely blown away by this camera. Its fantastic. Image quality is stunning. The camera starts up fast, it nails the exposure metering shot after shot, colors are vibrant, sharpness is good, and the fast f2.0 lens means quick shutter speeds even in low light. On top of that, image stabilization works well and the low-light performance is great. Just set your exposure metering to -1/3. For whatever reason, Canon's default setting tends to overexpose by +1/3. Battery life is decent, and the included charger is travel friendly with folding prongs. Get yourself a second battery if you are going to be shooting more than 200 images a day or taking lots of video. HDR mode is nice, but you will need a tripod or table or other steady location. If you have that, HDR mode can deliver really spectacular images in high-contrast situations. HD Video is solid too. I was worried about the 24 FPS but videos look fine as long as you aren't panning around like an over caffeinated monkey. And if you ARE panning around like an over caffeinated monkey, 30 FPS won't help you much. The cameara also starts up quickly, being ready to take a picture less than 2 seconds after you power it on. But what I really fell in love with were the controls - the two control rings let me have all the control I would normally have with a DSLR without forcing me to dig through complex menu systems. Awesome! I can't recommend this camera enough, and its the first time I have ever given a perfect 5 star rating to anything. I usually shoot with my 5D and an assortment of L lenses when I want and need quality, large prints and shallow DOF. But try lugging that setup around when traveling and you would rather not take any pictures. The S95 is the perfect solution. Remember the old saying...The BEST camera is the one you HAVE with you. Yes. I too debated getting it or the Panasonic LX5 but at the end of the day, I want something that will be as easy to carry and pocket as a cell phone. Plus I like Canon colors should I shoot in jpeg instead of RAW. The panasonic seems to have a magenta cast to their blues which make shots of skys a bit odd. Both cameras have their strengths and weaknesses but the S95 won me over with better pricing, colors in jpeg, HDR, good low light capability and portability although I would have liked the 24mm wide angle on the Panasonic. Video is OK at 24fps and is fine for an occasional grab. It's a little choppy so you have to pan slowly. Forget about chasing the kids with the camera. But I have my Panasonic TM60 camcorder for times when I want to shoot video. I got the S95 for pictures. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. It's a very capable tool that can do 90% of what my 5D can do especially when I shoot in RAW and post process. And it won't break my back carrying it around meaning I will always have it ready whenever the photo op arises. I tested in Las Vegas taking pictures at night, the results are excellent! Never seen a compact camera that perform so well, black were black without noise and the camera in "P" mode can be adjusted to match the right level of light. What is also good on this camera is what you see in the screen is what turns out as picture... even the digital zoom seems to perform well under low light. The only issue I found so far is the flash popping up where you hold the camera (which is annoying some times), but I think it is a matter to learn how to hold it. Very happy so far. The ability to manually control the camera is extra icing on the cake if you want something more than the limits of a fully automatic camera. My choices were narrowed to this camera the Lumix LX and the Canon G12 as an alternative to my DSLR rig. I wanted something I could always have with me when the DSLR wasn't practical. Any of the 3 cameras is a good choice but the S95 is the only truly pocketable camera. Just keep in mind, this is not a DSLR and as such will have some limitations. My one and only complaint is the price gouging on Amazon for this high-demand item. This camera can be found for about $369.00 but starting around Christmas time it's listed as high as $450 through some of Amazon's third-party sellers when Amazon's supply is depleted. This is offered as opposed to the choice to backorder the camera at $369.00. Sad to see Amazon treating their customers this way. I suppose they are within their rights to charge what the market will allow, just be aware that the MSRP of this camera is $399.00. But I must say I'm a little disappointed with the quality control. I received this camera with a pixel stuck on in the center of the frame. Right in the middle of every photo theres a blue spot no matter what. At this price point for a point and shoot I'm disappointed to be having issues right out of the box and normally I would write it off as an anomaly but I did my research and a lot of people have the same issue and either returned the cams or had to have them warrantied. At least I can easily return it as defective but what a hassle. Canon is slipping on the quality control so make sure if you decide to buy one to thoroughly inspect it. I shoot with the Nikon D90 SLR usually but was in need for something more portable. Was initially looking into the Panasonic Lumic FZ35 because of its zoom range and its relatively small size---scrutinized various sites downloading images from both the S95 and the Z35 and saw clearly that the S95 image quality was superior especially in shadow areas and low light. I had to finally ask myself whether a camera like the Lumix FZ35 which although compact and light was truly portable--it is not--If I need to sling something over my neck thats why I have my Nikon SLR which obviously has better image quality and a great collection of lenses for every conceivable situation, The Canon S95 is truly pocketable easily fitting into a pants pocket--what I was amazed at was the absolutely stunning image quality--I have done a variety of photographic tests and can attest that it is an amazing camera with tremendous flexibilty.My opinion is this-if you really value portability dont bother with smaller non-pocketable cameras when something like the canon s95 exists---it can easily go toe to toe with my Nikon D90 in many situations and in some areas rivals that SLR. Picture quality is awesome, and low light performance rocks. I will write more details later, but for now I am frustrated. I pulled the camera out of the case today to find the lens partially extended and the dreaded "Lens Error. Will shut down automatically. Please restart camera." Otherwise known as a E18 error. I've restarted the camera numerous times, and at no point has the motor made any noise, or has the lens moved. I can't say how frustrating this is. Mostly because I have become quite attached to this one is a short time, and it's part of my daily routine. I hope it'll be covered under warranty.. Updates to come. How about an option for resetting this error, or attempting to move the lens manually with the zoom control. Anything that would allow the user to troubleshoot this. I have to believe that things are set up to fail safe, and there is room for some trying. Otherwise Canon has a serious problem with lens extension mechanisms.
