I purchased this new at Amazon.
I wanted a pocketable p/s camera to carry for photos of opportunity not requiring a carrying case.
I am comparing this camera to the following p/s I tried before settling on this one.
Sony W200 - 12 megapixel - not wide angle and automatic white balance is way off...always a problem with artificial lighting.
Nikon S570 - 12 megapixel - too automated and too many out of focus pictures.
Sony TX1 - 10 megapixel -good pictures but not wide angle and I fear the lens cover lid will be flopping around in a few months.
Sony WX1 -10 megapixel-good pictures, nice wide angle, almost a keeper.
Canon SD 980 IS -12 megapixel-good pictures, older model but same price as the newer SD3500 14 megapixel.
Canon A650 - 12 megapixel, very good pictures, larger sensor, folding screen, but uses AA batteries and is like carrying around half a brick. Not for the shirt pocket.
First if you shoot with a p/s camera invest in Photoshop Elements and Noise Ninja if you want to make 8x10 inch prints or possibly squeeze out an 11x14 inch print. The sensor is tiny and noise is a factor which must be dealt with during editing. You will not get image quality equal to a half frame sensor. If you only want 4x6 inch prints it will not be so noticeable.
Comparing the Canon SD3500 IS to the above I get acceptable prints considering the sensor size, AWB is pretty good but still needs tweaking. Nice wide angle, 24mm equivalent, fits in shirt pocket, touch screen which takes a bit of time to get used to. One factor to consider is the video mode which makes MOV files. Windows 7 will automatically convert these to WMV for watching on your computer but if you want to email WMV files you will have to find a conversion software and quality will suffer immediately.
As to image quality I can only give a 4 as no 1 / 2.3" sensor will give you a 5 quality for the forseeable future. Construction appears to be good as you can get for this price range and things to watch out for is the delicate battery/memory compartment lid

I am loving this camera

This is the third Canon PowerShot digital camera, which I have owned. Each has worked perfectly and the only reason I keep buying new models is that new features are introduced, which compel me to purchase the next generation.... good marketing, Canon!
What I love about this model: the tap-screen back, which enables one to quickly identify what part of the scene is to be tightly focused. And the 24 mm wide-angle lens (speaking in terms reserved for 35 mm cameras) is SENSATIONAL. It enables me to get much richer, more interesting shots than my previous PowerShot SD950 IS digital camera.
While the digital sensor in this point-and-shoot camera is no where near as large as the sensor in my CanonDigital Rebel T1i SLR, and cannot match the impeccable imaging of the larger camera, the PowerShot provides a stunning back-up camera -- I am never without it. In Washington DC, last month, I was walking by the US Capital at 10 pm and had only my PowerShot SD3500 IS with me. I caught the gorgeous, lit dome and its mirror image in the reflecting pool in a shot that deserves to grace postcards or calendars. Love my PowerShot!

Poor picture quality

I bought this Canon SD3500 to replace my existing Canon SD850. I was looking forward to the larger display, the touch screen and the HD video feature of the SD3500.

When I received the camera, I took a few test shots. Initially, the pictures looked fine on the camera's 3.5" display. I didn't have time to test it further because that evening was my son's prom. I took the opportunity to use the new camera. I took about 20 pictures of my son and his date. When I viewed them the next morning, I was very disappointed. Several pictures were blurry. Others had lens flair even though they were taken indoors. The rest were grainy and lacked detail.

I figured I just hadn't spent enough time to learn the features of the camera. So, I spent the rest of the day reading the manual and testing the camera. Since I had always been pleased with the picture quality of my older Canon SD850, I decided to take a series of comparison pictures with both cameras - using identical setting. The only difference would be the resolution of the CCD in each camera (8 megapixels for the SD850 and 14.1 megapixels for the SD3500).

After taking about 40 test shots, I checked them on my computer and was again disappointed with the results of the pictures taken with the SD3500. The picture quality was fuzzy and grainy. When I compared the pictures from both cameras side by side, I was floored! The pictures from my older Canon were much sharper and well detailed. Believe me, I really wanted to like the SD3500. The camera has great features, but picture quality is by far the most important factor of a camera. Therefore, I could not justify keeping it, so it's going back today. If it were not for its innovative design and awesome features, I would have given this camera only 1 star. I have probably owned half a dozen Canon cameras and this is the only one that has let me down.

Love this small camera

I've previously owned other p/s cameras which were Nikon CoolPix. I had great luck with my first one, and horrible with the second. The pictures were always blurry no matter what scene you put it on. When I upgraded I purchased a Canon 30D, and I love it, however the functionality of traveling on vacation is a little more difficult due to the size. I wanted a small p/s which I could travel with that would be reliable enough to take clear accurate pictures. I've only been playing with it for a day, but the pictures are fantastic. I also love playing with the preset modes which allow you to add or substitute colors. I have Photoshop, but for someone who doesn't, or who doesn't know how to use it these are fun features to have!

It's small, lightweight and compact enough to bring anywhere with you. It's a keeper!

As far as the video, it's a nice added feature to take small clips with. You're able to zoom, but it's digital, not optical. Still nice to have in a p/s to take little clips to remember things by.

A Great Lightweight Compact Camera

This is a great camera and it replaces my SD 980 IS which I bought last year to use when I don't want to carry my Canon 5D Mark II around. Because of its size and weight it fits well in your shirt or pants pocket and as it suited for carrying all day long. You may even forget you have it. The 3.5" touch screen interface is sharp and bright. The menus are self explanatory and easy to use. The only physical controls are your shutter, on / off and playback buttons. A three position switch sets the auto, program, and movie mode. An easy to use dial around the shutter button adjusts the zoom level.
The HD video (1280 x 720) is a great option and you can record 10 minute clips that use about 2GB's of memory. Two standard definition video formats are also available. (640 x 480 and 320 x 240)
Image quality is good, and suitable for large prints.
Camera body color options are black, silver and pink.
If you are looking for an easy to use point and shoot, compact camera that is very light weight also shoots great video I think you will be happy with the SD3500.

Pink camera

I really love the size of the camera and ease of use. I was a little disappointed in a self timed shot that did not appear focused properly. I couldn't go back and retake as it was a birthday shot and I barely got my boys to sit still anyway. The camera was on a stable object and so it should have focused great. Otherwise I love the camera. The video feature works very well.

Fun to and easy to use

I have had this for a few weeks and I like it more and more each time I use it. I am in no way a pro, just a guy who wanted a camera that I can grow with.

Pros:
Very cool design, easy and fast to turn on
Big screen, easy to see while taking a shot and after to see if you got the shot
Touch screen user interface is nice and easy to use (once you get the hang of it)
I like the image output, but I am not a pro
Tons and tons of options (see Cons)

Cons:
Tons and tons of options, can be a bit overwhelming to someone like me, but the auto mode works very well
User interface could be a bit more consistent (but as it is a touch screen so perhaps Canon may upgrade the interface)
A bit front heavy, by this I mean that if you set it down with the lens extended (and even when retracted) if does not take much for it to want to roll forward onto it's lens. Other cameras may be like this as well, just be careful

One last tiny thing, the box says the camera is black, but it looks more like a dark navy blue if you ask me.

Overall I am very pleased with this camera.

Great pictures and phenomenal videos

Although I've only had this camera a few days, I am very pleased with it so far! I wanted to buy a camera that could not only take great photos but great video as well. This camera does both. The day after I received the camera I took it to my daughter's play. As you may know flash photography in a theater is a big "no-no". In the past when I have tried to take pictures without flash, the pictures turned out blurry. Not with this camera. I was shooting away and almost all of the photos were very clear regardless of lighting. I came to realize that the few pictures that were blurry were due to motion. At the time, I hadn't learned how to take pictures in the "kids and pets" setting for motion yet. When my daughter began to sing her only song in the play I definately wanted to capture that so I switched to video mode. I am so impressed with the video. The sound quality was good and the picture quality was phenomenal! The video was very sharp with bright, vivid colors unlike the grainy videos I have taken with other cameras. My only complaint is that the camera came with very basic, "quick start" directions. I had to play around with the camera to figure where to find and how to use a lot of its features. This camera takes great quality photos and videos with the convenience of a compact, easy to take along camera. 2-in-1. I'm really happy with this purchase and I would definately recommend this camera to others.

Nice but expensive camera

I had a Canon Powershot SD870 and was very happy with it. Unfortunately it fell down and broke the screen liquid crystal, so I decided to buy the SD3500. It is a nice camera, but the only difference from the SD870 is the touch screen. Otherwise the picture quality is about the same. The touch screen does not respond at the first tap. Sometimes you have to tap hardly. I also missed the printed instruction manual that comes with the SD870 in this highly priced camera. It is very complicated to go to your PC every time you need to learn about any camera function. Overall it is a nice camera that I would recommend despite the but high price.

Is this the best Canon can offer?

I don't know why, but I didn't like this camera. I have a huge D90 amateur professional camera and always take with me a portable Canon Powershot cam. My old cam was a Canon Powershot SD550 and my initial impression about this new one is that the pieces an external finish it's very bad. The picture isn't the best of Canon can offer. My old SD550 has a less megapixel, but the picture it's very sharp and colourful. The picture of this new cam seems to be very dark and the automatic iso is very confused. The touch screen menu it's very difficult for a newbie person that only wants to take a picture. Sometimes the old buttons can be very easy for some people that hate technology stuffs.

Good point to wide photo mode.

The bad: I think that Canon can offer a better camera with this price.

Great camera

This camera is great! The new DIGIC 4 processor for the camera provides many features not found on older generations of Canon Cameras. Before buying this camera my two choices were the Canon SD3500 IS and the Nikon s8000. Both looked intriguing in different ways. The SD3500is had the 3.5 inch touch screen while the Nikon had the 10x zoom. I settled on the Canon because of past experience with their previous cameras and with their great customer service. I may be biased, but I feel Canon makes a better camera and Nikon makes a better binocular, but I digress. The simplicity and intuitive controls are a major plus. I was a bit worried about the screen but it is made of reinforced glass and has quite a solid feel throughout. You can even use the camera with gloves on which is a major plus if you are outside and it is cold (my first real test of the camera was in Barrow, AK at -20F). The only real downside I have for the camera is the battery/sd card door is a bit flimsy feeling when not closed, but it hasn't given me any issues to date. The only other downside, which isn't really a downside, is that many of the features of the camera may seem novelty to some such as the ability to change all the bright lights in a room into heart or star shapes. I certainly don't have much of a reason to use it unless I want to get cheesy with my girlfriend. I bought a Sandisk Ultra II 16 gig class 4 card for the camera and everything works real smooth with it. I am able to hold over 4,000 photos at 14.1 mp or 1.5 hours of HD video. The class 6 cards may be a little overboard for this camera and a class 2 may or may not be enough for the HD video to run smoothly, but I haven't been able to test those ideas. If you really want a nice camera with all kinds of fun and useful features and new age touch screen coolness then I highly recommend this camera.

Just received my Canon ELPH 100 HS {orange} and I abullsteoy love it. The camera boots up almost instantly. Installed a 16GB SDHC class 10 card and now have 5000+ 12MB photo capacity or 60 minutes for HD video. The image stabilization at max digital zoom 4X4/16x works great! The camera easily fits in my pocket and is very light @ ~5 ounces.

This camera is a tragic waste of potential for a variety of reasons too long for listing here. The viewfinder has been mentioned already. It is worse than you might imagine. The zoom range of 28-140 is too limiting considering the competition. The aperature only opens to 2.8. And 28mm is the widest angle available. I truly want a camera in the category the G12 sits in with regard to size and construction quality, though one done right. Still waiting for some company to take my money.

I got interested in Rockbox and almost bailed when I found out it didn’t easily autoresume podcasts but treated them like songs. At the same time, this guy proposed patches to do just that for the Rockbox firmware. I took his patches, made a few tweaks and have been running that build for months. I think that functionality will eventually end up in mainline Rockbox code.I wrote Ruby scripts to handle the syncing. Bashpodder fetches podcasts, I delete them off my laptop when I’ve listened and periodically just delete the whole podcast dir off the player and resync the whole thing. It moves files to the podcast dir on the player oldest first until it runs out of room.”
