I was so excited and waiting for Canon's new cameras but now very disappointed in learning that Canon does not have HD video recording and question why did Canon leave this out while others like Panasonic and Sony have this option in their newly/upcoming releases of cameras? I can see this option as an important choice in choosing a camera and that Canon made a mistake.

Upgrading my pocketshooter from an SD700IS, I soon came to appreciate the new manual features. I also greatly like the shortcuts (single button boost to 100% screen brightness for instance, programmable buttons) and the dedicated PLAY button. Yet, the cameras shortcomings nullify almost all the good new stuff:
For instance:
* Monitor screen is now the highest surface on the back. It WILL scratch when lying on that side (on the SD700 the monitor was recessed 1mm into frame. A much better solution)
* The nub of the zoom-actuator is now a low-rise, polished rounded affair, that slips under larger fingers and even with small hands like mine, the tiniest amount of moisture (even a bit of sweat on the fingertips) makes it slip.
* Power Switch unintuitively located on top.
* I question the longivity of the rotating bezel around the rocker panel (dust ingress)
* Side-feet don't work due to being too close together and the monitor weight cantileverd over the side. Camera tips onto its most vulnerable surface.
As for image quality: Noise starts increasing quite considerably with ISO800 and becomes really bad when using ISO1600. Not only is the image merely noisy, it is literally blotched and also takes on a garish ugly green tint, not evident in other test shots at lower ISO under the same conditions.

This is my third digital camera after Olympus 4040Z and Canon 400D. I bought this camera 12 days ago since I find the SLR I'm having is a bit cumbersome for my travelling needs. The 4040Z is no doubt a good camera back then, still could serve the purpose but then not compact enough nor quick enough for my convenience. What I'm looking at is a compact camera yet good enough and quick enough for my two primary tricky shot situations i.e. indoor/low light shooting and high contrast shooting. After reading numerous reviews, I settled for 990IS. The Image stabilization and F2.8 at wide angle is good for low lighting situation. The Digic IV comes with Auto Intelligent Contrast. A big plus for me as I don't have to fumble for lighting offset correction. The Scene shooting comes with ISO 3200. Nothing to shout about but practical for my non-flash photography like inside a museum, etc. Settings can be done in a "flash", thanks to the quick dial located at the back of the camera. The 14.7 MP is an extra for detail shooting. Something I could do if the need arise (such as telephoto shooting beyond 3.7 x optical range) but for practicality reason, I settle for 9MP resolution and the image produced is still wonderful. I have taken more than 500 pictures so far and in the span of 12 days I've happily snapping pictures from hot and humid country to the 1st day snow drop in Northern Europe. All I can say 9 out of 10, the images turned out to my liking. The movie is decent and should be considered as secondary function - No More No Less. To be honest, I have yet to explore many other features that comes with the camera e.g. manual shooting, some other scenes shooting, etc.
Problems
1. Flash range is limited. Common issue for all compacts. However, my previous 4040Z has provision for external flash. Would be good if this provision is included in high end compacts like SD990IS.
2. Not sure if it's a one-off issue but I find the lens zoom movement is not as smooth as I would like to expect. A bit lagging at initial movement.
3. Not a problem really, but I will still vote for my Old Olympus 4040Z for low-light shooting. The Oly 4040Z bright 1.8 lens is simply unbeatable. The same goes for the 4040Z built quality. Wish Canon had the same.
