This the in between camera for those who don't want the size or expense of the G9 but want more features than a pocket cam. It feels good in the hand and has very easy to reach buttons for your most often accessed settings. The images are very good and easy to review on the awesome screen. Any severly negative reviews are from those who haven't purchased this camera or didn't have the brains to try it out first. Go to Circuit City, Best Buy or anywhere they will let you hold and use this camera. You will see that its worth the money.

I purchased this camera in October. It has taken me a few weeks to learn how to use it and what settings take the best pictures for my use. The manual leaves something to be desired in my opinion. I love the camera and the image quality is commensurate with the price tag. So far I have no complaints. Camera takes excellent Macro shots and the telephoto zoom lens works great. I love the image stabilization feature. The movie feature leaves something to be desired but for overall value and price this is one fine camera!
Problems:
No problems encountered so far. I have learned to use the LCD to pose the picture and it works fine in the Arizona sun shine. I would purchase again based on my experience. Canon makes a fine product.

Replaced my S500 with this unit for casual snapping and video clips after seeing it's price point and feature set, didn't bother to wait for reviews. The gamble payed off and I am fully satisfied.
To address the battery issue: use high capacity batteries. Anything <2200mAH is annoying and alkalines will get you out of a bind. I refreshed my battery supply with Sony 2500mAH NiMH units and am pleased. Additionally, I found that SDHC cards write significantly faster than the high-end SD cards and a 4Gb unit at Costco is under $40 these days with an SDHC USB adapter.
The big and long lens and IS are a nice combo, helps greatly when taking night shots, I've even taken some video on the ski slopes at night and had good result. Great unit to carry in a backpack or around your neck and have to whip out when you see those mountain sheep or the random photogenic vista.
As usual with small digicams, I've found that the AF is more useful on center point.
Problems:
Pincushion at the wide end is significantly noticeable, knocked my rating of quality down from a 4. The construction is generally excellent as Canons tend to be, it just feels a bit on the cheap side, not really a fault especially at the price.
