Love this camera!

I just received this camera and I'm so happy with this purchase. Wow, great pictures and easy to use. I've owned other Canon camers in the past and have enjoyed all the options it has for different photo settings. I have a bigger camera and I bought this one to carry with me for all the outings I do with the kids. It's bigger than the tiny cameras out there, but still small enough to fit in your pocket. The fisheye effect is just too cool! I love the big display on the back. You won't go wrong with this camera!

Amazing camera for the money..

I previously had the SX110 model and I loved that camera. I am loving the 130 just as much. The photos I get from this camera are amazing, and that's on Auto mode. Loving the Fisheye and Miniature settings too. Of course the thing I love most is the optical zoom(on this model, it's 12x). I also like that the camera takes AA batteries.

I have a DSLR as well but this camera will be my go to camera, much like the 110 was. For $249, you get a lot.Like I said, you can use the Auto mode, but you can utilize manual settings once you start feeling more confident.

I'm giving the SX 110 to my mom...

Great Camera

I liked the Canon SX120IS but did not buy it because it could not zoom optically during videos and did not have HD video capability. I looked at other cameras from Panasonic and Sony but they had limitations as far as I was concerned.

The SX130IS is great for the following reasons:

- 12 X optical zoom
- 12 MP picture resolution
- Canon DIGIC IV picture processing capability
- HD and standard video
- Ability to optically zoom during video recording
- SD memory cards (the most common)
- AA batteries (use rechargeables)
- Great photo quality
- Reasonable price (I bought when it forst came out and pain $249)
- Reasonable weight and size especially for a 12X zoom camera. It can easily fit in a case to carry on your belt
- Many picture taking modes including Program, Manual, Av, Tv, Auto, special scenes, etc

Any photographic product has trade offs but this is a camera that will satisify most users.

Excellent camera

I've owned the SX100, SX110, SX120 and now the SX130. I love them all and none have ever had a malfunction. They take great outdoor pics and the zoom is excellent. The video quality is amazing. The Sanyo eneloop batteries work great with this camera, but I always carry spares.

The only complaint I have is with all point and shoots, the low light pics (concerts especially) are blurry and the time between shots is too long. I wish they would come out with a point and shoot that is good for concerts, which is the main reason I use.

I also own Canon G11, S90, SX30, and a couple of Sony's and a Panasonic.

good for point & shoot camera

My last two cameras were Canon elph cameras which i LOVED. Decided on trying a different model and chose this one due to its features

I love the picture quality, autofocus, 12 X optical zoom, HD video, etc. It has many settings (b&w, fisheye, colorswap and many more) that are fun to play around with...just have to read the manual or play around with the camera to see that you get you money's worth. The ding of one star is due to the fact that it uses two AA batteries rather than a rechargeable battery which most cameras use now. I got rechargeable batteries that are working fine...just put them in so i'm not sure how long they will last.

overall, this camera that will satisfy most users.

If you are looking for a new camera this is the one to buy!!!

I recently got the Canon PowerShot SX130is and i love it already. I love that the camera has a top of 48x zoom! This camera also comes with great effects. In the SCN mode their are tons of options such as fireworks, color swap, fish eye, and my personal favorate color accent (you choose a color and everything els that isnt that color turns black and white). For the great effects, amazing zoom, and overall greatness of this camera it is one you should not hesitaate to buy. The price is alo great for the features.

Great as a Starter Camera for a Photography Student

I'm currently enrolled in a digital photography class where we're learning to shoot in manual mode. I couldn't afford a DSLR (nor was I really sure that I'd be taking enough photos to justify the cost), and I needed a camera to use for this class. I read the reviews, and this was one of the few point and shoots that had full manual mode and a reasonable price. I'd highly recommend this camera for a beginning photography student. You'll be able to adjust all the things you need to adjust (exposure, shutter speed, manual focus), and you can take pretty decent photos.

slow lens

I ordered the camera and played with it for several days. The lens is a little bit slow, it start from F3.4. So without using flash, almost all indoor night time pictures are blurry or noisy.
Another problem I found with the camera is, the control wheel on the back is very difficult to rotate, I always accidentally pressed down buttons while turning, that may be because I got a defective unit.
If low light performance is not an issue to you, this is still a excellent camera.

Replacement for another Canon

Over all it is a good Camera, I like the way the photo's come out. I love the video, it is so clear and the sound is really amazing. But like everyone said it really eats battiers for some reason. The other thing is the time between photos is a little long I have not figured out how to shorten this time.

SX130IS Cannon Powershot

Once I take the time to review & understand more features about the SX130IS, I know we will become inseparable. This camera is a huge improvement over my previous point & shoots. It's light weight & works as well as the bigger cameras I've used in the past. The 12.1mp and 12x's optical zoom are incredible. My photo's have improved in quality 10 x's what I expected. I even entered one shot in a photo contest. I'm thrilled with it's ability to focus when I let it. I tend to get excited & shoot without properly focusing, but even the majority of those have come out better than I hoped. It has allowed me to capture some really good shots of my grand kids who can be a constantly moving target. Shooting a still images is even better than kids, just not as entertaining sometimes. Using a 1 to 10 rating scale...I rate my abilities at 7 and the camera at 10+. I'm thoroughly enjoying the learning curve. My next step is to gain a better understanding some of the lighting vs flash nuances. Bottom line: Great purchase for intermediate users & perfect companion to the bigger bulkier much more expensive cameras! Love it!

Didn't work out

I ordered this and was thrilled with its size and zoom capability. I have a 1 year-old, and love to take pictures of him. This camera did not have a setting that I could capture a photo of him in motion, which he always is! I am accustomed to having more control over the SCN functions - this camera has 28! You cannot, however use them on demand, the camera selects the appropriate SCN function for you. The auto controls that adjusted for skin tone to avoid white-out when using the flash were nice. OVerall it did not perform as expected. I returned it and bought a larger-bodied camera with more control.

I was not happy with the color on this especially indoors. It may have been the camera itself as had some ohter issues with it.. I ordered a panasonic lumix (24 mm wide angle) after that and compared the two. the color was much better on the panasonic with the leica lens. sorry cant remember model right now but it has 12 x zoom and comes in many colors was 249 so more than the canon but much better color. things I do miss in the canon as love my 800IS but this camera just did not do it for me. The panasonic is much smaller too which I really like altho I do miss the viewfinder but seems the perfect camera is hard to find.

Above Entry Level

I'm not enough of a photographer to need anything more than a point and shoot so for me, this camera is a luxury. I've had the camera for about a month now and I've used it a lot! I had the owner's manuel out for the first couple of days, (It must be downloaded.) but only for one or two functions that weren't obvious. I probably won't use more than half the settings available but it's nice to have the choices in case I feel like experimenting. I take a lot of existing light shots and it does a great job. Really fast download to iphoto on the Mac as well. I bought a 4 gig memory card to go with it and now I can take something like 2300 pictures at the second highest resolution. Other reviews here are correct about the original batteries not lasting, however, since then I've been using rechargeables and I haven't had to replace them. I'm also impressed with the sound reproduction in the video setting. I made a short video of some acoustic musicians (in a relatively dark room) and was very happy with the result. I may get an 8 gig card and just use it for video. The camera will record video until the memory runs out. Over all, I'm very happy with this camera and I recommend it without hesitation.

Love the zoom!

Love the 12x zoom on this point & shoot camera. Excellent quality for outside pix. Good solid size, yet still manageable to use for hiking. My only frustration is the shutter lag indoors. Still experience missed opportunities of that special photo moment because the camera is still thinking. No matter how hard I press the shutter, there's a delay before the camera takes the picture and the moment is lost of facial expressions, pet antics, etc. Otherwise, I'm extremely satisfied with the mega zoom and the quality of the photos. Plus being able to use AA batteries. I use rechargables, but it's comforting to know that in a pinch I could run to the store and plop in regular AA to get through an event until I could recharge.

Very close to perfect...

I have the SX110is and love it for the same reasons that I love this one, the SX130is. My father is a professional photographer, so I know a thing or two about cameras.

Actually, of course, every year they make the cameras better and entice buyers like me. This one has the HD video, and the 12x zoom, and 12.1 megapixels. Both features sold me. The SX110is now goes to my wife who has a fine collection of fairly new electronics that I discard annually.

The quality of photos is spectacular. The color is far superior to any camera in a comparable price range, especially a simple point and shoot. My 3 week old daughters skin tones show up amazingly realistic.

HD video is a plus. I am not sure how much I will use since I have an HD camcorder, but still, in a pinch it is nice. My only issue with the camera is the placement of the 'video' mode, so far from the 'auto' mode on the dial selector. This makes it inconvenient to switch back and forth, which is the main reason why I will probably not use the video mode as much, and the reason why I proclaim that this camera is 'very close to perfect', and not just perfct.

Canon has never let me down. The AA batteries make me happy. I hate running out of power on a camping trip with no options. The screen size is magnificent and bright.

This is a great purchase, until next year when they add a feature that I MUST HAVE!!

A solid point-and-shoot

When I decided I wanted (read: needed) a new camera this year, I obsessively researched it like I do most things. Being a poor camera nerd, I decided that I wanted to stay in this price point so I could save up for an SLR in a couple of years. This camera is a fabulous placeholder, and it's the best image quality I've seen in a point and shoot for this price.

Yes, there is some turn around time between shots, and yes it runs on AA batteries (although for me this isn't really a con since I invested in some NiMH rechargeables and they've been doing a great job), but if you're like me and your bottom line is image quality, then I really don't think you can do much better for the same amount of money.

I live out in New Mexico and take a lot of photos outside, so I haven't played with the flash much, but without it the camera has done a really great job with direct lighting, indirect lighting, sunset colors, etc. I've printed some pretty nice 11x14 posters (and the printing sites say I could take it up to 12x18 without adverse effects), so the 12 megapixels is working out pretty well.

This isn't an SLR, but it's solid image quality at a very fair price, and honestly, I wouldn't want to spend too much more than this on something that doesn't give you the absolute manual controls of an SLR. Highly recommended.

Nice camera

Picked this up for $200 at Best Buy to use when I don't feel like lugging my DSLR camera along. It offers a decent set of manual controls. Image quality is excellent with good color accuracy and decent sharpness. I found the controls very easy to use. There's been some complaints about the camera's size but in my opinion it allows for a better grip when shooting. Obviously it takes the best pictures in manual mode but the ones taken in Auto weren't half bad either. I was able to get decent shots out of this camera up to and including ISO800... not so much at ISO1600 but I can't really be upset that a point and shoot at this price can't take decent pics at that high ISO (that's where the DSLR comes in).

It's highly reccomended that you get some NiMH rechargeable batteries for this camera. It will eat through batteries. And also autofocus and shot-to-shot times are leisurely. I like the manual pop-up flash feature - some people don't, but it gives you more control over your pictures.

I honestly did not test the HD video in this camera but from what I've seen it holds up pretty well in this regard.

One thing the manual shooters might not like is that there is no middle ISO setting between ISO800 and ISO1600. I found that slightly annoying but I do most of my shots at ISO800 or below so it's something I can live with.

Very pleased with this camera overall and consider it to be a steal for all that you get with it - especially with the 12x zoom. Highly reccomended for both casual and advanced photographers alike.

Very Nice

Well yes it is bigger than most pocket cameras, but the lens is bigger. I brought another excellent little Canon I have and took pictures, at dusk, of some buildings. The difference was very obvious. The SX130 pictures had way more light than the smaller camera. If you ask me the AA (which it does eat) batteries are an advantage. You can buy replacements everywhere if you don't have a power plug. You can buy your own rechargeable batteries for very little money. With other cameras if something goes wrong with your battery you have to order a new one, for $40-$100 dollars, with SX130, no problem. I used a mulit battery charger to charge my wife's new Sony camera, the battery never worked in the camera again. Some chip in the battery got messed up. Had to buy a new one.

Picture queasily is excellent, but don't rely too much on presets. Especially low light setting. Use P mode and control the camera, decide what ISO you want to use. All of these cameras bump up the ISO high to get low light photos, but this just results in more noise.

I read in some reviews that the flash is a bit slow. It may be on the first shot, but after that it recycles just as fast as on other cameras. It is a little big to call pocket camera, but I use it as a secondary camera, "for better pictures".

Overall I think camera delivers what it promises. It doesn't pretend to be small, but it gives you the versatility of AA batteries and, if you know how to use it, takes excellent pics. It turns on in a fraction of a second and is ready to use. The weight of the camera makes it more stable when holding, with less shake. If you grade it in it's category, it is a great camera!

Holy Macro!

I sell on eBay full time. I was looking to replace the canon P&S that I was currently using with something that was a little bigger, that had a better flash and Macro settings. (For product listing photos)

This review is going to touch on a couple cool features that I like for the sake of eBay.

1. The macro capabilities on this thing are amazing! In Manual mode with Macro on, you can have the lens 1/2" away, and it will still lock focus and snap a photo. The best Macro that I personally have seen.

2. Again in Manual mode, I LOVE the fact that it shows you exactly what the picture will look like before you take the picture. If your ISO is low, you shutter speed too quick, and it is darker, your screen will show you how dark the picture will be. Turn the iso up, put the shutter speed slower, and the image on the screen gets brighter letting you know you are getting a better shot.

No more taking the picture, looking at it, deleting it, re-doing settings and then doing the process all over again.

Which by the way, is also helpful if you are at a wedding or an event where you only have 1 chance to get the shot.

The reason I only give it 4 stars, is the battery life. However, after I blew through the 2 provided batteries after 1 hour, I put in rechargeables that have lasted all day so far.

Everything else with the camera is fun to play with. The minature effect has gained popularity in the past couple years. If you go to google images and search for "Tilt Shift", you will see what it does. It works best when you are higher up, taking a photo of city scapes, buildings, cars, people etc. A lot of people will do a fake "Tilt Shift" photo with photoshop.

This review as stated above, is more for how I use it with eBay. I have not included a full review of all features.

A step backwards

After 5 years of owning the Power Shot A620 I thought it was time for an upgrade (I know, why fix something that's not broken?). I had taken thousands of pictures with this old model and I thought the colors were infinitely better than with any other brand but I liked the idea that these new camera had a really good zoom and bigger viewing screen so I tried to avoid giving importance to the many warning reviews about its low battery life (which are accurate by the way). I realize this model only carries 2 batteries but overall I would say you'll spend about twice as much than with older ones, for example, just try zooming while shooting video and no matter how new the batteries are, you'll likely get a "low battery" warning (I'm not kidding).
But what really has me down about this new camera are the colors which are mediocre at best. There is very little contrast and faces turn out rather yellowish. With my old A620 you could choose modes such as INDOOR and NIGHT SCENE which would greatly improve results and this new model is suppossed to do automatically with "suppossed" being the key word here.
Now I'm stuck with these new camera which I have no idea what to do with. Until recently I thought I would never buy anything but Cannon but this idea is history. For now I'm going back to my old A620 and will someday look into buying a newer model but the only thing about such I can say for sure is that Cannon has lost a customer for good.

Dust under front lens element

This camera has an inherent bad seal on the front lens element so that dust and moisture collect inside the camera on the first element (or glass lens cover) or on the inside lens. I have sent this camera back to Canon twice and they sent back refurbished cameras both times. The first replacement had the same problem. I am now on my third Canon SX130 and we will see if this is a dust gatherer also. Instead of fixing the problem or even admitting there is one Canon just sends another camera to you. They are supposed to contact you by email about any problems but I have never received anything just another camera at my door. What will happen when the warranty period is up?? This is a defect that they will not fix. Canon has this camera listed as "do not repair just replace".
DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA!!!
