I own only one camera: a Nikon D200 with a small assortment of lenses.
Despite my single year of Nikon loyalty, I visited the Canon showroom in Shinjuku, Tokyo. It was here where I was able to try any Canon camera with any lens that Canon makes. Naturally, I wanted to give the new Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III a go, so I did.
All of my expectations were throughly met. It is a bit of a learning curve with getting used to the different Canon layout, but it didn't take too long to adapt. The build quality feels very solid as well.
Overall I liked it, but more importantly I liked the massive selection of lenses Canon had to offer! The only thing I would like to see with this camera is an ISO that can match or get close to that of the Nikon D3. But, I can imagine that excessive noise will become a difficult issue when 20+ Mega pixels are packed together in a full-frame sensor.
I won't be buying one in the next year, as it is far more important to first invest in some good lenses!!!

Gents, I came here looking for genuine opinions of this camera, I currently own an old but still great G2 and a 30D with all the matching Canon lens and accessories. Being very interested in the 1D I was hoping to find constructive opinions from 1D owners, instead all I find is just people trying to be smart...........This camera deserves better than that surely.............

To the person who took back the 1Ds Mark 111 and bought the D3 - I think he should reevaluate his skills for this camera like the 1D is not high noise in the high ISO and the AF is far from being slow. Once you have either one of the Mark 111's in your hands, nothing else fit, not even the D3.

Superb camera
Heavy but doesn't feel so heavy with an Optech strap. Beautifully solidly built.
Fast (blindingly fast) - AF/General Operation.
Massive resolution. Don't underestimate the ability to crop pictures. Chuck away half the pixels and you've still got a big picture.
Huge ability to sharpen pics. they need it but they can take it.
Is the noise bad at iso 1600 - its there but its easy to clean up.
Why do I say its only averagely easy to use. Simple - it does lots. Its takes time to learn to use it well. In practise it will be no more complex than any other modern pro dslr. From an ergonomic usage point of view its great.
This is the first time since I started digital photography with my Olympus c2000 (many moons ago) that I've broken into a huge grin when I've seen the quality of the shots. Its masses better than the Canon 5d/20d.
I was gobsmacked as I wasn't expecting it to be this good having read the reviews.
As for
-dust and cack in the viewfinder. Mine didn't have any.
-The viewfinder is straight.
-colours are pleasant straight out of the camera.
-wb seems to work well.
-No af problems. The af is faster than anything else I've ever used (that includes a Nikon D300/D2xs/Canon eos 1v).
I am not a Canon fanboy but I can say that for me this camera is value for money. It puts a smile on my face when I take pictures with it.
Problems:
Mine had a scratch on one of the buttons. Am in two minds as to whether to take it back for a swap out. It will pick up scratches in use but I'd rather I was the one who put them there.

Brilliant!
I've had this camera for a month now and like the MKII is just simply amazing. Don't expect a huge jump in image quality from the MKII but there is one and the ergonomics and features are much better than before. Expensive but not when you compare against digital backs which is where this now lies but this camera needs to be treated like a professional camera and not a point and shoot to get the best out of it.
