A really well put together camera. I have been using it for a couple weeks now. I shoot mostly my kids and my niece and nephew. Lots of little league and soccer shots. The 12X zoom is great for getting close-ups on the field. I really like the smooth look of the photos. They have a very natural feeling to them. I also like playing with the fun color options. The Movie Mode is quite remarkable. The movies are totally comparable to a camcorder (and great audio). Upon close examination, there does seem to be some noise at 400 iso. However it doesn't seem hurt the picture quality (IMO). The manual mode is so easy to use that I find myself using it far more often than I have on cameras I have owned in the past. The manual focus is also simple to figure out and actually works. I was trying to focus through a fence today and was able to do it quite quickly with the MF.

This camera was featured in a fishing magazine "Anglersmail" and it boasted to be the first publication of it before release.

According to what i read, the Canon S5 IS is designed with the Angler (fisherman) in mind.

So this is proably not geared to your "motion capture" type but Excellent for trophy shots, close ups and scenery.

I got mine for 290 and love it!

All in all i think its an amazing camera

This is an exellent piece of glass. The picture quality is amazing below ISO 200 but its good enough At even ISO 400 if you are going to print at the size of a postcard size.

The performance is great and it is very fast. The battery life is good, It took me 190 shots to wear out the alkalines that came with the camera. I even tried the normal 800mah NICD rechargables which lasted for around 80 shots which is very pleasing. The movie mode is exellent. The digital zoom is also quite handy sometimes. I took some pictures of the moon with the digital zoom and they came out nice. The supermacro is exellent.

Problems:

# The lens cap is not good and comes off easily may be canon made it like that purposely to prevent the lens from jamming if the camera is powered on with lens cap still on.

# Memory card in the battery compartment.

# 15X or 18X optical zoom lens would have been appreciated.

I bought the S5IS as an upgrade from the S2IS

I bought the S5IS as an upgrade from the S2IS.

Mainly for:

• the better screen which is a huge improvement
• buttons which you can’t activate accidentally so easily (very annoying on the S2)
• more mega pixels
• the hot shoe , adds to the versatility .
• Ok and I prefer the black
• And a few of the features not present in the S2 eg the screen grid to help out with the horizon.

Overall , impressed (ISO 100 and below) but not as impressed as I thought I would be, as they say my other camera is a 20d with some decent L series glass and I think I might have expected just a bit much from a microscopic 8 mega pixel sensor .

You just can’t compare the two (I wasn’t expecting to) but then my 20d does not live in my back-pack permanently so it just isn’t there for those , darn, I wish I had my camera shots .

I am unconvinced that image quality is as significantly better than the S2 as it should be going from 5 to 8 mega pixels other wise what’s the point ? I’m not sure if its the compression letting the image down or what .

It has all the things I liked about the S2 of course , long zoom, plenty of buttons without having to deal with endless menus, image stabilisation, nice controls, good build , solid feel, great battery life, excellent video and the tilt and twist screen ( I hate cameras without them) .

I gave my S2 to my best friend as a stopgap as his 20d has decided that green and purple are it colours of choice in images.

Problems:

So far none, not withstanding the lens cap, I quite liked the way you could just flick the S2 cap off with your finger.

There is the noise …….

I don’t usually pull the SD card out from the battery compartment to download but given the wrestle to get the door shut when I put in the first set of lithium e2’s I could see how it could get irritating in the field .

Had S5IS now for 10 days.

Took photos of couch and had dark corners. Lots of dark in photos. Catch 22 dark or grainy on high ISO

Returned it to the store and bought G9. Much easier to tote along and has full manual controls. So far all I've gotten is people putting their hands up so I won't take their picture, but the photos of the palms of their hands seem quite good.
