20X zoom would be wonderful if the lens were good, but you can see in many other threads here how unhappy people are with the very slow lens Canon has put on this camera. Indeed, that's one thing that makes me much less enthusiastic about this camera. Try shooting a 560mm equivalent at f/5.7. And it's not as if it's so hard to make a bigger aperture for a lens on such a tiny sensor. But now you have to make it work well also at 28 mm equivalent, and now it gets tough. So at best the lens will be somewhat limited, and at worst it might not be so good (it won't be terrible because Canon doesn't make terrible lenses or cameras as a rule). Actually, I think RAW capture would have been wasted with that lens. But whoever tells me that I should wait and see how the camera actually performs is exactly right!

I am very excited about SX1 as a smaller companion of my 450D. Especially on the video zoom feature which potentially can be used as a HD video recorder. The only issue I see is that Canon should have also provided 720p as one of the format since it takes too much flash mem space to save 1080p and post processing is also a nightmare with 1080p. I haven't been able to find the bit rate information for their H.264 1080p. Hopefully I can get away with 45 mins 1080p video with 8G card.
I have used CHDK fair a bit. In all honesty, the jpeg engine canon has for portable is pretty good at squeeze out the last bit of performance out of the sensor. I haven't been able to improve the image significantly with CHDK, DNG conversion, CS3 and neatimage adjustment. This is of course not to defend lack of RAW in SX1 but if I know I will treasure the photo I will take in particular low light condition, I would bring my 450D with a 30mm prime.

My opinion is that it is a very good compact indeed. It packs allthe highlights imaginable, even SMOS sensor, but anyway i suggest that it\\\'s better to bue a DSLR.
