The 40D is an amazing camera. It has lightning fast AF in almost any light from very bright to very dim. The framerate is a great boon for sports photography and the user interface is beautifully constructed. While I don't find the Custom shooting modes very useful, and I feel that the Auto ISO function was forced in to the camera without proper consideration for how it would function, the camera's numerous other features are stellar. The dust busting system is much better than that of the XTi. The AF accuracy is second to none (except maybe the 1D MkII/N, and the viewfinder is one of the most wonderfully comfortable to use APS sized viewfinders that I have ever used.

The camera is really sturdy, the only quibble I have with the whole thing is that it doesn't have weather seals, so during rainy days a ziplock is necessary.

As is always the case the images are what counts, and the 40D really delivers under any circumstance.

Nikon D300 is an excellent camera, outstanding performance (IQ & fast) very happy with decision to buy this, no regrets at all.... At first I was a little reluctant to buy due to not being confident with the ease to use, but I adapted quite quick & now is awesome - I wont look back.... I have installed the D2X mode & customized all custom settings to suit my shooting style..

I just have switch my old Olympus E-510 to E-3, and so far, i found that this is a superb camera, with a rich feature and excellent image quality. Price for Performance ratio is also very good for me compared to other brand which are 3 X more expensive, for same class....

Nikon D90 is the best DSLR camera sub 1000$ as of Dec 2008. Great IQ, ergonomic body construction, user friendly menu, light weight, easy to find lenses, HD video clip is a plus.

I agree with you! I had the Sony A700 before, which was better build and faster. I bought the D90 because of video. I don't regret it. Video is a very nice feature. I'm now waiting the day, when Sony annonce a full-frame camera with video to switch back, because I miss the Anti-vibration in-body.(Nikon has only one fast lens 2.8/70-200 VR)

Canon G10 is an outstanding advanced point and shoot camera. I bought this camera to replace a simple point and shoot camera (Canon SD750) because I wanted more control over the exposure settings without the bulk and expense of a SLR. The picture quality is excellent. The build quality is outstanding, all metal body, controls feel solid. At first I thought it was a bit heavy and big, but that's comparing it to the SD750, not really a fair comparision considering it has so much more to offer. After I uploaded my first set of pictures to my computer, there was no going back, truly outstanding. Critics complain that the movies aren't HD, but come on, how large of movie files do you want. The movies are very good and smooth. This is the best pro-amature camera on the market. To get any better, you have to jump up into the SLR range, and with it comes price and bulk

Well, I wouldn't vote for my own camera, it is clearly not "the best" now. But how many people here have really been able to test the various brands and models to make a educated determination of which camera is better than another. Like most reviews and polls, this is a shallow play toy aimed at the easily amused and is biased by those easily influenced by marketing hype. (in addition to being open to simplistic cheating resulting in wildly skewed and inaccurate results) In short, its a joke.

The Pentax K20D is the best ~$1000 camera in 2008 and the K200D is the best sub $1000 camera in 2008. Both have in camera shake reduction and are weather sealed and well made. Other bodies in these classes feel like toys. Plus, the bodies work well with "Legacy" glass including m42 mount glass.

They all have their strengths, but Pentax gets you a great all around camera that you'd have to spend loads more cash to outdo with other brands. It's versatile, well built takes great pictures, pentax lenses are top quality and you can use eny kmount or m42 ever made easily

I voted for the Pentax K20D, I own two, plus a K10D as a back up. I switched from Canon just after the K10D was released, who could resist a weather sealed body at that price. I locked on a 30 year old Pentax manual lens and instantly got better result than I had been getting for years with my Canon kit, I did a wedding the week after using 20 year old KA mount lenses and it was the best I had ever shot. I'm sure glad I kept my Pentax Z1P and all my old lenses

Somebody seems to be getting upset lol, Ive always found slagging off something without trying it is at best pathetic. All the cameras on this poll have their pros and cons, but I researched well before I chose the Pentax K20d. Its IQ is as good as any, low light noise levels on a par with the d700, very effective in body Shake reduction makes it work with any lens, dust alert and dust removal system, multiple exposure and extended bracketing, burst mode at 21 fps which gives pseudo movies if you want that sort of thing. Couple that with shock and weather resistant body and lenses (DA*) which I have used to produce stunning images in extreme environments makes the Pentax K20d the best dslr of 2008

Why do people buy Canon when they can get better build quality with Pentax? Compared to an EOS450 the K20d feels like REAL quality, and that goes for the photo quality as well.

"Why do people buy Canon when they can get better build quality with Pentax? Compared to an EOS450 the K20d feels like REAL quality, and that goes for the photo quality as well. " Maybe they care about things like AF and access to some of the best lenses around, or maybe they want to shoot with a 35mm sensor. I voted for the D700. It is an excellent all around camera for the price. The 5DII would have been my second choice.

Sharpshooter - Pentax user do care about AF and your knowledge is obviously limited as the K20D has Auto Focus!

The Pentax K20D with DA* lenses is an excellent combination that has top quality glass and the advantage of weather sealing so if you are caught out by a shower or want to photograph sports when the weather may change, you can do so without worrying about potential damage or having to keep the camera and lens inside a plastic bag. It is ideal for snow, or waterfalls.

Maybe you should try a K20D and you will soon see why it is such a good camera.

"Maybe they care about things like AF and access to some of the best lenses around,"? eh? my point exactly... As stated, the camera does have AF, duh! Also, Pentax is still known for making some of the best optics around. People need to do some research before commenting on blind faith. Anyway, it is obvious from the scores above, that this site, for the most part, is visited by educated consumers!!

I voted for the D60, have used Nikon since the 80s but its nice to see Pentax get their finger out and start producing great cameras again. Most of the guys at my Camera Group are Canon users, we have one guy there used an old Pentax (dont ask me what) and the Canon guys constantly took the mickey, despite the fact he still won most of the trophies, six months ago he showed off his K20D, god you should have seen the envy in those Canon guys faces, made me wish Nikon would do something similar, at the same price of course.

What is this, a pentax website? I'm sorry, but Pentax optics do not compete with Canon and Nikon. Some of the better Pentax lenses are just rebranded Tokinas...nice lenses, but not exactly top of the line. And yes Pentax has AF, but it isn't as fast or reliable as the competition...it just isn't. How many sports shooters do you see using Pentax? A DSLR is a system and the lenses and total performance need to be considered when making a purchase.

Comment number: -33-

He sharpshooter, Maybe it's time to recalibrate your scope. Or buy a Pentax one of course :>). Just tell me why there are so many after market adapters, that allow Canikon users to mount Pentax glass on their camera body. Ever saw a adapter that makes canon glass work on another brand body???? Ever heard of the Limited series of Pentax? And for your info, Sports isn't the only field of Photography. I am the first to admit, there are faster AF systems on the market. But don't degrade the quality of Pentax glass or the K20D for that matter. The combination of K20d with the SDM lenses makes a very powerful and capable one. And I haven't even mentioned the factor Value for Money, compared to Canikon. Have a nice day, Martin.

"I'm sorry, but Pentax optics do not compete with Canon and Nikon."

It's absolutely true that there are excellent lenses from both Canon and Nikon, otherwise (you would hope) people wouldn't use them. But there's always this emphasis on bigger and faster, and okay, if you're a sports or wildlife photographer a system with high frame rates and the longest lenses may well be best for you. Pentax don't currently have high frame rates, or huge lenses. But they do make superb lenses. Yes, some of them were developed in partnership with Tokina. Tokina have also released rebranded Pentax lenses.

Take a look at this article:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/columns/sm-02-05-02.shtml

It's a few years old now, but just so you know a little more about the lenses you're dismissing. Then read this one:

http://photo.net/columns/mjohnston/pentax-35mm-lens/optical-discussion/

Note the quote at the end of that article "It really is just beautiful, and will gratify…no, it will spoil anyone who likes the very best optical quality and appreciates what truly outstanding lenses can do. It ranks right up there with the best lenses I’ve ever used in any format."

I think what you probably meant was that the lens range from Pentax isn't as great as that from the Nikon and Canon, and that's true. Pentax lenses cover 10mm to 300mm at the moment, which for 90% of photographers is almost certainly more than enough.

"A DSLR is a system and the lenses and total performance need to be considered when making a purchase."

That's true. No arguments there. And the people who use Pentax have considered this, and made their purchase, because they appreciate excellent build quality and features, quality of lenses, range of focal lengths, value for money...

Of course, the original question was to "make your selection for best DSLR camera", nothing about the system as a whole anyway.

Hey Guys, I thought this was a POLL? not open warfare! I get the impression that there are quite a few Canon users out there who are really p!$$£d off that Canon have finally been knocked off the top perch, and the votes for the K20D obviously reflect this, I also get the feeling that some of you Pentax guys are getting your own back for all the years of scorn Canon users have poured on you for the last 15 years, well good on you I say. Personally I dont care who wins cuz at the end of the day all the cameras listed here are damm fine pieces of equipment and all have thier place in the hobby or even the workplace, who cares if Canon produce the best bodies and lenses for sports or wildlife, I dont!

NikonNick at 13:14:24 on 2009-01-03

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Comment number: -37-

Open warfare? :-) No, just a little discussion!

If you go into a camera shop these days and buy a DSLR you will have one that is capable of producing great results, no matter what brand you get. It just needs to be remembered that you have a choice, and to make your own mind up about what is right for you.

I'm sick to death of hearing a customer say "I want to buy an SLR" and a shop assistant handing them a Canon and replying "You want one of these..." That's not how it should be, because everyone has different needs.

In my line of work I get to handle various cameras, mostly at the lower price range, and find some of them feel horribly cheap, some are better made, some have quite baffling controls or long winded ways to adjust things like ISO, others are better.

Simple things like two (customisable) control wheels make the K20D (and K10D before) easier to control than other cameras in a similar price bracket. I don't personally use the TAv and Sv modes, but I know plenty that do, and value those extra features.

Spot metering has only just been introduced on the 450D, Pentax have included this on all their DSLRs so far (even the new K2000/Km).

It seems to me that Pentax do as much as they can for the price, whereas Canon do the opposite.

But I'm happy as long as someone has weighed up the pros and cons of all the systems, and made an informed choice. If that's a Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus or Pentax, good for them, they did the right thing. Listening to a uninformed shop assistant, or anyone that says "X brand are best, the others are crap" is, in my opinion, the wrong thing to do.

Egbert Eyeliner at 16:44:24 on 2009-01-03

Well said Egbert, as Nikonnick says the cannon boys are feeling like everybody else does when their chosen brand is overlooked in favor of big bucks handouts from one manufaturer or another, ensuring a 'top' rating in a biased test. Uk magazines that I've seen rave about Cannon, forgetting that they're playing catch up all the time, for example live view on the 450, old idea and not as good as the Olympus original. Then there was the first14.5 meg CMOS sensor from, let me see, ohyes Pentax. Cannon suddenly upped the meg count to out do a better camera, I could go on. Read the reviews in the panel alongside this poll, sharpshooter, then adjust your views. There are other, sometimes better, alternatives to cannons.

I respect and appreciate the efforts of every manufacturer, yes even Pentax! (why are there no smilies on here LOL) I wont go into lengthy detail why I chose Canon but it wasnt because a salesman told me to. As I recal Pentax have introduced a lot of firsts to the photography world, didn't they produce the very first AF SLR? The K20D is a top notch bit of kit and I take my hat off to Pentax. I think its time those Canon and in some cases Nikon users who are eager to slag off Pentax woke up and smelled the coffee, I also think Pentax owners should also back off from rubbing it in that their chosen brand has produced a winner.

(FYI, You should never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.) As has been stated, plenty of good points all around regardless of the brand. It is actually a pain in the ass because we cant remember who shot what on which camera. I know it has nothing to do with this poll but I am impressed with the SDM lenses though, I would rate them as good as or even marginally better than some of my old Zuiko lenses.

Now I normally refrain from posting in discussions like this but lets lay it down. I have used the D300, 40D, 5D and K20D, each has strengths and weaknesses but as it is now, the best bang for the buck on the market is the K20D. Please note not the BEST! Just best for the money overall. There are holes in the lens line up and some qc issues to deal with but the results I have speak for themselves. I even have a few 5D and D300 owners seriously considering swapping systems after they see what I have done with the K20D, ( tho that will change once I start playing with when ever the latest wiz bang new kid on the block camera is ). Lets not brand other camera systems or owners, lets just vote on what we think is the best of the year.

I voted for the K20D, as I just got one a couple weeks ago. Who could turn down the Adorama deal for $699 for body+18-55 lens kit??? Went to my cousins for New Year's Eve - she recently bought an XSi. No offense meant for XSi owners, but dang, that thing felt plasticky and flimsy! When she played with my K20, and shot a few snaps, she regretted her decision. After we got to playing, and I taught her some of what I had learned, she wanted to start shooting raw. Needless to say, she had to pull out the manual, and then go through all the jibberish about what mode it's in, etc... what a joke! All we gotta do is hit the menu button, hit down-arrow 4-5 times, and make your changes! Gotta love it when a product is designed "just right," works "just right," and actually is "just right." Now, does this mean the K20D is the be-all end-all camera that all photogs should get? Of course not - each has their place, function, strengths, etc...

I voted K20D as well. Best bang for buck out there, hands down.

The Lumix G1 is NOT an slr. It does have removable lens but that does not make it an dSLR.

Actually, that is what I like about Pentax. They seems to put feature that very useful, especially on their lower end. Top LCD panel, focus confirmation on old lens, spot metering. I mean, yes, Live View is nice, but my friend who own e510 rarely use them.

I have nothing but praise for the Pentax K20D, I was out shooting fishermen when I slipped and the K20D momentarilly went under the water, I yanked it out as quick as I could and miraculously the camera survived, God may have given me quick reflexes but Pentax gave me a weather seled body and lens.

The K20d (14.6 MP) and the K200D (10.2mp) have in body shake reduction and weather seals and the k20d also has live view.

What's with the Panasonic Lumix G1 being listed as an dSLR?

Excelent! I heard of one guy who tested his Pentax by taking it into the shower, DONT ask me what he was photographing LOL.

I dont believe johnhoovers comments for one bit, no camera could survive a dunking into water like that, not even a so called weather sealed body, and as for NikonNicks post about the idiot who is supposed to have taken a camera into the shower, I think someone has a very vivid imagination. The k20 body may have a few seals here and there but water would still get in around the lens mount and it would still get into the lens and trash that, I think someone is having a laugh.

Canonman - you jump to conclusions without looking at what there is. The Pentax DA* lenses are also fully sealed, the mount is sealed and the body does not have a "few seals hear and there" but 78 seals. There are numerous reports of them being dropped in water with no adverse affects and there are plenty of Pentax users (myself included) who have no problems using the camera in torrential rain. Check the facts before you criticise.

As a Canon user I have to say I am troubled by canonmans comments, he seems a little disturbed that there may be a better camera out there than his precious 450D, I'll stand with thedoctor insofar as I agree that the K20D is a camera worthy of winning this poll, had I not so much money invested Canon gear I may well be tempted to switch brands. Canon DSLRs have been lacking in innovation for quite a wee while now and I think the Pentax K20D may make Canon sit up and take notice that they have some serious competition.>>>>>I voted for the 50D by the way LOL

Well, yes. There is a chance that the result of the poll is rigged, as it allows you to put multiple votes. But that doesn't make Pentax camera not the best bang for the buck, or their user are satisfied with their purchase :)

Question by canonman "Canon 450D gets my vote. Pentax are crap they always have been. Who needs weather ealing anyway? what sort of idiot is going to use a DSLR in the rain." Answer 1 "A professional" would be my guess, but then what would I know only being a K20D owner. I wonder why they sell Canon EOS Weather Sealed Lenses

My Pentax camera's have serverd me very well for the last 25 years and, in fact still do, including all thoes old lenses! The K20 may not still be in use 25 years from now, though it is built to last. What ever Pentax camera I am using then, I am sure to still be using those same lense! Pentax respect the photographer and give them a highly capable tool at a very competative price.

My vote goes to the Samsung GX20 because its MY camera, but I agree that Polls like this are a waste of time, the Olympus E30 for example is only at the bottom of this list because not many E30 owners have found this poll or bothered to vote. Anyone wishing to buy a DSLR would do well to ignore the voting when making a choice and take more note of comments made by individual owners (well the SANE ones at least) then go to a store and try EVERY brand before making a final decision, DONT take notice of salesmen either, they'll only want to sell you the one with the biggest profit margin, I know, I used to work in photo equipment sales.

tomtom has just about given the best possible advice yet, as a pro photographer I cant stipulate enough how important the feel of a camera is in your hands, a camera should feel good right from the start, dont skimp on cost, buy one that feels solid and well made. For general photography ANY of the DSLRs listed above will perform adaquately, as a pro I use Nikon gear but in my line of work both Pentax and Canon would be equally as suitable, the Pentax would have the edge because of the image quality and access to top notch lenses but as said, for general photography ANY would be OK, just buy one that feel right.

All the cameras listed are good - period. Brand loyalty should have nothing to do with voting (though I see it does). I voted for the Pentax K20D because for the price, around $700 now, and the vast number of inexpensive lenses available (around 50 years worth).
