Nice camera!

After using the finepix A800 (8 megapixel entry level camera) for a couple of months and impresed of its image quality, I decided to buy the F31 for its manual controls and its suberb image quality. Unfortunately I was a little late, so I am a proud owner of a F50fd, since yesterday. As an experienced amateur, I noticed immediately, that this camera shows more noise than the A800 and it is quiet annoying already from ISO 400. This camera is great in construction and features and -as far i played with it one day long- it is very satisfactory for a sub compact but -unfortunately- far away for being "low noise". Of course, there is much to do for evaluating the pros and cons of this piece of enginnnering. I definitely would prefer it to be 8 megapixels.

Generally I am happy with this camera, but certainly not for its image quality at 400 ISO and above .

Cons:

I d like to see the "fine" compression on all resolutions -in a firmware update-, espesially the ones of 3:2 and 6 megapixels.

the double-beep for confirming the correct focus is turned off with the shutter sound and not the general operation sound, where it belongs to.

Disappointing performance compared to its predecessors. I bought this as a replacement to F10 predecessor. I had been impressed by its image performance specifically its clarity and colour rendition. I bought the F50 pretty much sight-unseen expecting it to at least be equal in performance in some features - if not exceed them across the board.

In summary I have returned it for a full refund for the simple fact that the image quality was so appalling that the improvements in other areas just could not justify the purchase - it could not fulfill its primary objective of taking pictures, so any other improvements were simply moot.

Cons:

The AUTO standard settings put an 800 ISO which is just a bad move - it virtually programs the camera for failure for all regular consumer users who evaluate the camera on its standard settings. Pictures were disappointing at best. Noise overwhelmed the images and colours were flat. Working through the adjustments improved the pictures, but the efforts were marred by the fact that first impressions had already been set. Manual adjustments are not simple - you have to invest heavily to make pictures work which makes it difficult to make spontaneous snaps pop.

I just purchased this camera in favor over the Sony T-200. I love the F50. I got great results in a low light setting. The face detection is just awesome. I have my ISO at a 400 setting and I don't see any noise in the pix. I am glad Fuji stuffed this with 12 MPs!!!

f50fd is not as good as the f31fd

The f50fd is not as good as the f31fd because, for twice as many mega pixels, it just does NOT deliver a twice as better (sharper, more saturated, lower noise) picture performance than the fantastic f31fd, besides using up battery as if there is no tomorrow.

But, of course, one understands the business smarts of Fuji in catoring to a social mindset that just minds the haves (Look at me, look at me, mee, MEEEE!!! MIIINE is a 12MPixel one!) and not the content of quality, whether that be of the equipment or of what that equipment can do. Or else, Fuji, pocket camera department, is just a horde of asinine wanna bees just trying to make a fast buck! People who have put the Velvia in the market have no business crapping it with f50s or f100s.
