Star Star Star Star

finally a bridge camera with semi prof features: double external flash connectors, 14.3 x zoom range, 28mm wide angle, RAW, big CCD, easy contrast control, filter thread

Problems:

- menue control not consistent (back exits menue instead of go back one level)
- several items not storeable in customer mode (measurement mode, auto focus mode)
- digital zoom (needless, but has own button)
- multi delete of pictures not supported well

Fuji S100fs is a great camera

So far this camera has performed fantastically. Color is quite nice and photo quality so far has been excellent. Found a few minor problems but no worse than any other camera. Zoom is a HUGE plus. Also having both a hot shoe and a sync hook-up is fantastic.

Night and dark focus is astounding. It works fantastically in low light situations. I never believed high ISO quality was possible until this camera. I now have no qualms whatsoever about shooting up to 800 where before I wouldn't shoot 400 unless I absolutely had to.

The face detection works excellent. I rarely use the on-camera flash preferring manual settings with a sync flash. But after I tested it, I can say I have no concerns in those moments I do have to use it.

Settings are all at my finger-tips. Manual settings are quick and easy now that I have got to know the camera.

Overall it is a great camera so far.

Problems:

EVF is atrocious for manual focus. Almost impossible to get good focus manually through viewfinder. Really should've had an optical viewfinder since it had manual focus. The rear screen is the only way you can use the manual focus and that means bright sunlit photos won't get manual focus.

Super Macro doesn't do all that much. Only works at wide angle which means the image is only slightly larger than at Macro/50 mm focal length.

No ISO below 100. Was originally advertised (and still is) to have a low ISO of 64. Fortunately on this camera the photo quality is SO good up the scale, it doesn't matter!

An all purpose quality camera.

I have been using a S602Z since 2003, and decided to step up. After careful consideration I chose for this compact camera instead of a body with kit-lens. For me, this camera is worth every single Euro I paid for it. The Fuji colours are as great as ever.

The range of the lens is priceless to me. The zoom capability is making a big difference, even though focus can be somewhat slow or you may even have to retry a few times if you use it at full zoom. The image stabilisation is a must have at 14x and works adequately. I don’t’ understand why I liked the motor-zoom in the S602Z so much. The manual zoom is much, much better. At the wide-angle range this lens is giving you just the little bit extra you require for a ‘bird's-eye view’.

The macro and super-macro have been somewhat disappointing, but it may require some more practicing from my side. As long as you don’t use the zoom it will focus adequately. So far, I shot a lot of images which are not focused at the subject. And it does not help to focus, fix, and then move the camera to fit your composition.

I can now also shoot much better in low light conditions or when a flash is pretty useless (forest, overcast etc.) Even inside, I get very acceptable images. Yes there’s some noise at higher ISO levels, but so what?

The EVF is not bad, but not as good as on my S602Z. The LCD-display, on the other hand is excellent. Since you can tilt it (very convenient), it is also usable under sunny conditions (most of the times)

Although mentioned by others, I have hardly noticed any Purple Fringing

The camera has a very professional look, and with its sun-cap attached it looks very sturdy (a show-off). All buttons are at a logical position, and the camera has a nice grip. Some may find it a bit heavy.

The Sugar series - S100fs @ ISO800 (3 images)

As I watched AZ whip the Iggles today (yes!), I had my camera in hand and as my kitty Sugar lay on the floor, I flipped up the LCD and shot a series of pix of her changing expressions.

There was nothing but available room light to shoot by, so I cranked the S100fs up to ISO800 and shot away. I have done nothing to these pix except resize ... no levels, no sharpening, no nothing.

I'm liking this camera. ;-)

S100FS: Some more flowers

Well been bored and stuck at home. Flowers in the garden. So I figured why not.

Hope to get out and about for some seascape images soon.

Christopher
