Well, it's obvious that Nikon is caving in to pressure to make d-SLRs for idiots like my relative who couldn't understand why I sold my p-s Sony H1 last year--a camera which was horrendous with lag and blow-outs when shooting flash shots of our new daughter--for our Nikon D40. He said "why sell a camera that can make movies so you can buy one that can't?" He said this as he was standing underneath crisp 13 1/3 x 20" blowups of fireworks and landscapes taken by the D40.

Yes it will make Nikon money but I still say--why accomodate these embicles? What they need is a Coolpix. If they can't work an SLR they shouldn't buy one.

And again--where are the AF-S primes? No such class discrimination ("if you want AF w/primes get the D80") exists with the other brands. This is just disgusting.

Actually, it wasnt made dumb enough for me. Again NO AE BRACKETING. Forget it! I will be spending my time reviewing the new Canon 450 and New Sony 200. And dare I say it, the new Fuji S100 bridge digicam.

Good exposure, nice grass. Makes me wonder about the owner of the toy motor bike. Leaves a lot to the imagination. Enjoy your D60 !

If you are invested in Nikon eqeiumpnt, like the flash and a few lenses, it might make sense to look at a D200, which is on par (or better than) a Canon 30D. You MIGHT see prices finally start to drop, too, since the D300 has been announced. If you only have this flash and no lenses and really want to jump ship to the dark side, go ahead and do it. You can sell the flash on eBay or in some other way and start over with Canon eqeiumpnt. You can get $ 150 easily for your SB600, if not more. I know money is money, but you should not let the loss of $ 50-100 on your flash stop you from using Canon if this is what you decided that you want to do.

people who know their way around a DSLR will find very little here of use and the book is definitely written for the middle ground. It does a reasonably solid job, in good conversational english, of taking the reader through the various parts of digital photography covering what affects a photograph, the hardware and add-ons (such as lenses) and what you can do in photoshop. If you want a good place to start your new digital hobby then I would recommend you at least taking a look. But for me it falls for a few reasons. First off, it is a big book that really could be covered in half the time; it’s a bit too padded out without getting to the core stuff that budding photographers are really after. Once read through you’ll find yourself having to go back and search a bit to find the useful stuff. Secondly whilst you have tips like ‘this photo would have benefitted from a larger aperture’ it is all too generic. Thanks David, but what I really need is more useful detail like what aperture should I use with what shutter speed and white noise and exposure adjustments etc. With a mass of things to think about in a modern DSLR I would have liked something a bit more concrete. So if I want to do landscapes or potraits or close ups or night shots or whatever how about giving me the settings I need and then suggestions of how to tweak this for various different results so that I can see what effect this will have and pick up some good tips along the way. Unfortunately there is little to none of this so it ends up being a good read but in terms of understanding, well, there is little in this book which is not in the manual, albeit more words and pretty colour pictures, though, of course, the camera’s own manual doesn’t have sections on Adobe Photshop. Here’s an example. With a slow shutter speed and two kids walking quickly into the picture, pausing then walking quickly out I managed to get a photograph of two ghostly images which was quite fun and the kids loved trying this out. That was off the top of my head but this is the sort of thing you brought a digital SLR for – its versatility – and really, ideas like this should have been suggested by the author to kick start your photography career. The book lacks these suggestions. In short, this book doesn’t take the enthusiastic amateur and get them started with real examples that they can shoot themselves with tasks they can follow and improve upon. At the other extreme those who do know a bit about camera settings and the effects these have on pictures will find little to excite them in this book. An average book with promise that just falls short.Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you?  |   CategoriesRecent PostsArchives theme by Theme4Press  •  Powered by

Go with Nikon. With dSLRs, IMHO, you must either buy Nikon or Canon. Both make superb cameras which take superb pictures. The thing that raises Nikon and Canon above all the others is that they have an enormous range of lenses which are easy to find. If you really must stray from the two big names, then at least get a camera that has a Nikon F lens mount so you can use Nikon lenses. But why not just buy a Nikon? There is also the matter of keeping your lenses as you upgrade your camera body. Nikon has kept one single type of lens mount through the company’s long history. Canon have constantly upgraded and changed their lens mount which has made most old lenses totally useless with any modern camera body. Even the current line up of Canon bodies have three different lens mounts, so the lenses you buy for your first Canon body might not work on your second body and then you get hit again if you upgrade to a better body.If you are a total beginner then I would recommend the Nikon D40. It’s cheaper than anything Canon make. In my opinion, Nikons are more intuitive and easy to use than Canons and look nicer.Reasons to choose the D40 over the D40x are:-Cheaper-Faster Fast Sync allows you to use fill flash to make spur of the moment snapshots look quite professional especially on sunny days.-Less grain (high ISO noise) and therefore higher image quality. The only real reason to buy the D40x is if you intend to print very very very large prints or if you’re a sports/wildlife shooter who NEEDS to crop heavily.Don’t worry about needing a pro body in the future. dSLRs in your price range are only designed to last for around 50,000 shots. This goes for ALL of them. So by the time you’re a seasoned pro, you’ll need a new body. Camera bodies are relatively cheap and ‘disposable’. They’re also ‘old’ and obsolete within a year or so, ESPECIALLY the cheaper entry level models. That doesn’t mean your camera you buy now won’t be any good in 12 months; it WILL; it just means that specs are moving very fast right now. Buy a cheap D40 and get some good lenses and an external flash.Goodluck!

There are a few exceptions. The kit lesens that came with the N60s etc were budget G series lesens and lacked an inbuilt focus motor, used on a budget nikon DSLR (that is the D5000 or D3000) that also lacks a focus motor, and you are left with no option other than to manual focus if you wish to carry the inexpensive G lesens over to digital. The N60s etc will accept any nikon F mount lens, except where old pre-Ai lesens with bunny ears' will foul the aperture sensing ring.Depending on the lens you may need to focus manually or stop down meter.I would opt for an n65 (gains depth of field preview) or n80 with a 50mm f1.8 AF lens, a budget compact set up capable of high quality results and which will assist your learning of apertures and depth of field.
