An exceptional camera for the money. Great build and handling. Razor sharp images and good (but not quite as good as my Fuji S3/S5pro's) dynamic range. Active D-Lighting does an acceptable job though.
I dont use any in-camera colour tweeking or sharpening ever on any of my cameras and find the D300 produces superb quality, sharp, colour saturated results with everything set to zero. Zoomed up to 100% in CS2 images taken this way look reassuringly good unlike the usual fuzz i'm used to with my other Nikon / Fuji cameras.
Features such as low noise at high ISO, accurate auto white balance, fast AF and 6fps make this camera a definite winner.
Update: 2000+ frames so far and all is well. Fabulous image quality and colours. I've been making some A3+ prints from 800 - 3200iso files. Very low noise, wipes the floor with the Fujifilm S3.
The quirky wireless Creative Lighting System works like a dream with this camera. High accuracy TTL flash exposures, just set the onboard flash to commander mode, set the SB800 to wireless and away you go...
PROBLEMS
None, except still waiting for my vertical grip to arrive for the obscene price of 250 quid..........
Update: Grip arrived, very well built piece of kit, makes the camera handle in a well balanced manner. Comes with a battery tray for the regular style battery and one for AA's. If you want to use the high power battery you'll need to buy the extra battery compartment door.
The AA's will give you the 8fps if you're in the mood, so why bother!

Nikon D300 is certainly the king of the consumer DSLR's at the present time. However, it's crown would be seriously threatened by a wave of new 12-14 MP DSLR's going to be introduced by the major manufacturers, including Canon, Pentax & Sony, in the early part of 2008. Other features being equal (live view, 3 inch LCD monitors, face detection, anti-shake and dust-reduction etc.) Nikon D300 may be prematurely dethroned in it's infancy by introduction of full frame sensors at the current APS price by some of them.

Nikon D300 ISO 3200 photo
My wife's cousin graduated from high school last week. I was able to catch this photo of him practicing his guitar shortly after the graduation ceremony. I was very impressed with how clean this image was given the high ISO setting.
Photo was taken with available light, ISO 3200, 1/40 sec at f2.8, Picture control setting was set to Monochrome. I used the Nikkor 17-55 F2.8 lens. C&C Welcome.
