I bought the D40 body in the UK for just USD500
as it was a refurb/demo model. I just needed a cheapo body so I could move into digital without spending much. I use all my old lenses, not AF ones, and have no difficulty in getting the exposure right (90% of the time) and I am pretty accurate guessing distance. Some of my Nikkor glass is 40 years old but all of it performs well in the D40 - even the old 43-86mm zoom seems to enjoy digital more than film. Shots are more contrasty and look sharper!

I am very much an amateur photgrapher and very much looking to move forward a step after ordering the D40 last week. I have owned two other digi's, a Kodak DC210 and for the past four years a Fuji S304.
If anyone can help with a beginners guide to all the manual features (would need to cover from absolute basics)that would be much appeciated. I dont even know what a f number is!
I went to the Phillies - Red Sox (baseball for those not familiar with american sports) game yesterday afternoon. I have tried to take pictures with my D40, and the 70-300 zoom before, but those other times were night games under the lights. The bat was always partially blurred, and the ball as well. Yesterday was a beautiful bright day. It is amazing how much better photo's you can get in natural daylight, even with a lens that isn't that fast. (Of course, good seats help quite a bit too!! We were sitting 5 rows behind the Phillies dugout.)

Ok, I shot this photo tonight, we were getting quite the storm. C&c is welcome, i know this probaly need work but it was fun to shoot. Hopefully this is in the right place, I used a Nikon d40 with kit lens and focused to infinity and also used 3-15 second exposures.
