I am extremely satisfied

I am extremely satisfied with my purchase of the 510.

It exceeds the image quality of more expensive cameras and then has the added benefit of a very large range of useful features.

Image stabilization extends the range of situations you can take a hand-held photo. Live view is indispensible for macro photos, low level or overhead shots. This will become an expected feature on all cameras in future, along with effective dust eliminationl.

Picture quality is outstanding with accurate colour and very low noise. The small amount of noise on the higherst ISO settings is fine and has an appealing, film-like grain.

Focus is accurate and very fast. Coupled with the unlimited 3 frames a second, it makes a responsive sports camera.

The E510 is light to carry, easy to understand and versatile.

I believe this camera will be very popular with a wide range of buyers and will set a new benchmark for cameras in its price range.

Problems:

The only negetives are minor quibbles. I would have liked an articulating LCD screen. Lacking this seems like a cost-cutting measure.

In a sop to \"pixel-peeping noise fanatics\", the default settings for noise filter is unecessarily high, but this is easily switched off to retain more crisp detail.

I would have liked a movie-mode too, but no SLR does this, so the E510 isn\'t at any disadvantage in comparison.

I'm an upgrader from the E500 and in my opinion any niggles on the E500 have been improved on the E510. With noise levels at higher ISO's and slower shutter speeds being greatly improved.

The Image Stabiliser is a real boom and it really does work! The Live Preview, when I need it, also works well and being able to zoom and focus without squinting through the viewfinder is a big plus, Sure, in bright daylight the LCD is difficult to see but aren't they all?

At least you can resort back to the viewfinder.

A few users keep commenting on only 3 Focusing Points....... Hhmm, Not a big issue for me, it works well so let's keep it simple!

The other issue for some appears to be oversharpening, again not a problem for me. Once you have worked your way through the menu and setup YOUR preferences and levels (not the Olympus engineers preferences) for sharpness, colours, saturation, etc, you should have no problems. The quality of my colourful test shots, when printed out, were excellent and the colours spot on!

For anyone hesitating about purchasing the E510, I would say 'Go For It', The kit lenses make an excellent package and are more than adequate but add a FL-36 or FL-50 Flashgun and a couple of Prime Lenses to your Long Term Wish List and you'll be up there with the best of them!

Problems:

Battery life seems reduced, most likely through playing with the Live Preview, this is simply solved by purchasing a couple of BLM-1 spares....... Oh and whilst your at it, purchase the ME-1 Eyecup Magnifier!

A superb camera

A superb camera and excellent model in the evolution of 4/3 cameras. The camera feels exceptionally nice in the hand and the IS feature works better than anticipated. I''ve managed to get some really great pictures at just 1/2 sec - can you believe that. High ISO capabilities have improved substantially and that's good to see.

Battery life has been absolutely superb - again, better than expected. AF has been improved on previous 4/3 cameras.

This is a camera that barring perhaps one or two caveats, should appeal to many other brand users - which apparently it's doing. I suspect that Olympus will sell plenty of these.

Problems:

It's time for Olympus to get away from the 3 point AF system. And if they do intend to stick with that on this level camera, then at least separate the AF points a bit further apart (like the D40). The 3 AF points are spaced entirely too close together IMO. That's my only gripe about that camera - it's that good really overall.

Im still quite satisfied with this camera

I'm still quite satisfied with this camera after almost two months of usage. This was my first DSLR, after PnS and bridge digicams, and the transition was quite straightforward, even though some of the menus and configuration options could use more intuitive UI and namings.

With the 14-42 kit lens, image quality is very good and images are very sharp (but DOF is decidedly not short).

IS is good for about 2 stops, LiveView is quite useful though a bit laggy (especially coming for PnS/Bridge), but even then, it's a lot better than not having one at all.

Battery life isn't an issue, even if the Olympus charger provided is of the slow charge variety.

The anti-dust system works.

However the main advantage of this camera IMO is the handling and weight, which puts it well above other DSLRs in the same price range: it's comfortable to hold, and it's light enough that you won't consider leaving it at home.

Problems:

Menus could be rearranged and clarified.

Some options (like shutter delay) should get reinitialized when the camera is shut down, or at least have an option for reinitialization: it's always annoying to miss a few shots because the last time you used the camera it was set to 2 seconds delay.

ISO settings could benefit from a more prominent visibility, especially for ISO >800+ so you f.i. don't mistakenly shoot at 800 because the last time you used the camera, you were at 800.

Some Wide Angle Pictures

Hi all,

I just came back from vacation...traveling to California and Nevada for nearly a week. Most of the time it was so smoky from all the wildfires. On Friday in mid-morning, the smoke cleared enough for me to get these pretty photos.

For about six months, I have used only the Zuiko 70-300mm lens with the Olympus E-510, but with the opportunities here, I had to use the wide-angle lens. I hope you like these...something a little different from me.

Last week, while I was at Lake Tahoe walking along this beach, I saw what I thought was a sandpiper. Is that right? It was hard to capture with the camera, because it wouldn't let me get too close...and then would move away so fast. Here's one I like, because it blended in with the background. I hope you like it too.

This last Saturday, we were in Reno, Nevada. I happened to see this large bird. Anyone know what kind of bird it is? The river is a gray color because there was still some smoke from the wildfires in California. At this point, the smoke would come and go; it was worse a few days earlier.

First, thanks for drawing additional attention to the NY Times article regarding food photography. As a foodie, photographer, and entrepreneur in the foodie social network space, I really appreciate your support. In building twiddish, the dish-by-dish restaurant review iPhone app and social network, I have spoken to a lot of restaurateurs and chefs and for the most part they have supported diners photographing their food for several reasons. First, user-generated dish reviews are very different than restaurant reviews as they force the diner to focus on the dish and only the dish. Restaurateurs and chefs appreciate this because the specificity lets them know exactly what they are doing right and what can be corrected. Further, the recognize that most diners are not as adventurous as foodies and photo-based dish reviews enable the average diner to feel more comfortable in trying a new dish, restaurant, or cuisines, which in turn helps to fill seats and create buzz at restaurants.Jonny

Thanks for the recommendations you have provided here. Yet another thing I would like to convey is that laptop memory specifications generally rise along with other advancements in the technologies. For instance, as soon as new generations of cpus are brought to the market, there’s usually a related increase in the scale preferences of both computer system memory plus hard drive room. This is because the program operated by these cpus will inevitably surge in power to make use of the new technological innovation.

I wish i could have such a model as well. She did a wonderful job i must say ! And you as well. I do think it is not so easy to get such impressive pictures. You made it so easy in your stories that a believe i can do that with my little IXUS as well. Okay, i tested it and it came out better than ever. But there are differences to your style. I think it is the light Or the model ???Thanx for giving me a way i can follow.Jonny
