I bought K-5 just before my vacation trip to Morocco on these Holidays. This camera is excellent upgrade of my D20K. I do candid photography. Small size, quiet operation and improved sensor make this camera great tool for my shooting style. If you like to know more how I used K-5 in Morocco go to [....]
The only slight problem I have that it is somewhat awkward to change memory card and too many control buttons for my taste. You have to have another battery. Battery life is OK but to charge it takes very long time.

Pentax has really done well.
I have been shooting with a Pentax K20D for a couple of years and love the camera, the only problems that I had with it have been eliminated in the K5. I have had a K5 for just over a month and have been putting it though its paces. The ISO is amazing shooting as 6400 looks like 800 or less in their older cameras. They have moved the controls around which bothered me a bit at first but they truly are far more intuitive and much easier to use, another improvement. I the auto focus problems have been taken care of especially if you us a DA* lens. I am using the 50-135 DA* as well as a few non star lenses. The star lens is amazing, great image quality, good speed, wonderful bokah, and the auto focus is very good and virtually silent. It was easy to focus on the trees outside my windows then on the pains cross members without the auto focus getting confused. I havent done much with the video yet but what I have done looks great. I definately would recommend this camera, it performs wonderfully.

No-brainer upgrade for any k10D owners out there
I owned a Pentax k10d for a couple of years prior to buying a k-5. I saw other Pentax models come out (k-r, k-7, etc.) and held out for a "worthy upgrade." The dynamic range, video options, and in-camera digital filters make this upgrade a "no-brainer" for me. I was an early adopter of the k-5, got the camera in December and have been blown away by the improved ISO performance.
For me, as well as other users, the increased ISO alone (to 51,200, but I think 6400 ISO will be the max most people will shoot), is worth the upgrade. I can shoot w/ the kit lens in low light conditions, and the images look MUCH better than when shooting with primes in ISO 800 or 1600 on the k10d. Amazing.
It's a no-brainer upgrade for k10d users... can't speak to other cameras since I don't own them, and you'll be asking yourself why didn't you buy this sooner when you finally get your hands on it (I know I did, and I got the camera only a few weeks after initial rollout).

There really isn't I agree. The quiatly of the photos really comes from the quiatly of the lenses. The better the lens, no matter what the brand the better the quiatly will be. I have a Canon and am partial to them because the lenses are interchangable between their makes and models from digtal to film cameras (which sometimes makes them easier to find used and in fantastic condition but of course becareful of where you buy!!) I have a two fellow photog friends, one shoots pentax, one nikon and the quiatly of our shots is very comparable, because of the lenses we use.
I owned one of these for about 14 months. It became my main day to day lens. It takes incredibly sharp, high quality images throughout the zoom range, sweet f-stop is about 4.5 or 5.6.
Our image standards are rather unforgiving: there is a 44″ wide photo printer downstairs. Not every image can provide the data needed to hit 44″ wide, but that is the target. My/our lesser zooms seldom make the grade. This lens does so, regularly.
This lens allows you to ‘sample’ frames out of a landscape, and produces zoomed in shots with breathtaking clarity and image quality. My other, lesser telephotos have a few settings that produce images with the quality obtained with a short lens, but by and large, you can immediately tell that the frame was shot with a long lens, zoomed in. In other words, a whole lot of files that never get sent to processing and printing. Not so with this puppy. Basically, if you are getting less than great clarity with this mounted on the front of camera, your problem is you are doing something wrong behind the camera.
This lens requires a tripod mount, careful stabilization, mirror lock up before shutter release, self timer or remote control trigger. Basic long lens protocol. Wind is your enemy. But get it rock steady between gusts and the results are simply: Wow!
Mine got totaled in an unfortunate hiking wipeout on Orkney. Smacked it into a rock with gusto. I am now buying another because my approach to outdoor photography now requires the capabilities of this lens.
The points made by other reviewers – it is a heavy lens, and has no zoom lock – are quite true. My left arm is pretty buff after spending 2 months in Scotland carrying this lens on a K-20 on a tripod up hill and down glen. Small price to pay for what it delivers.
You don’t want one of the more “reasonably priced” long Pentaxs or a Tamron. You want this one.
