Coming from the K20D, it's main advantages for me is the silent shutter sound and the faster frame rate. When shooting events or when I'm out in nature, a silent shutter is a must have. The improved frame rate invreases my chances of getting the shot just right when shooting moving wildlife.
Builld quality is excellent, I have no doubts when using heavy lenses on it or when putting it down in the sand, dirt, etc.
Problems
HSS flash with ambient light dictating a shutter above 1/180s is too hot for my taste. The previous models were spot on, the K-7 needs some further tuning.

The K7 is a very well maufactured small package that feels and handles like a super sports car compared to a truck if I consider the EOS 7D and the Nikon 300D as main rivals.
Its menue and button funktions are a clear step ahead of the already well thought and good handling of the K10/K20. It is also packed with features that a average user will hardly ever use more than once or twice and has some extras that are unique to Pentax cameras.
Image quality is much different from the k10 and I would rate it very good in the low ISO range up 800 and above average in the higher ISO range up tp 3200.
A clear advantage is that you can control the level of noise reduction at each and every ISO level.
Extra functions like live view, movie mode and horizon level compensation are more a toy than a tool for me and not relevant for taking good photographs.
All in all it is a excellent camera - very easy to carry and handle with the full choice of a huge range of very nice lenses from Pentax and third party manufacturers even if they are fully manual and 30 years or older.

Early look
I went back and forth about whether to buy the K7 for a long time because I already own the K20D. My biggest gripe about the K20D is the slow autofocus which too easily fails at low light levels. The promise of a better autofocus system led me to buy the K7. I've had it for just a few hours and have found that the autofocus is indeed much superior to the K20D - nearly instantaneous in most cases. It works at low light levels, too. The other thing that one notices early on is the superior resolution of the LCD monitor over the K20D. On these two points alone, I'm happy with the purchase. Now I get to play for a few days testing out the other new features and improvements that other reviewers and previewers have talked about.

I love the cam!
superb build quality and weather sealing, really cool digital filter and features, accurate auto-focus (which is has improved in speed and is now only marginally behind canon/nikon cameras of this level), very good image quality. I only shoot in RAW and I have worked with Canon 40D+50D and Nikon D200 + D300 + D300s: I can tell you that from the noise level these cameras are similar; but I prefer the Pentax way since there are more details and noise reduction can be adjusted by software - I still don't understand the bad opinions about the noise in images, I am more than satisfied, I just love the images! My expeditions in the jungle, in deserts, on oceans/islands and on the highest glaciers on earth haven't been a problem for this little genius!
