I just viewed the specs of the new Sony Cybershot W300, and I was suprised to see it has a 1/1.7" super CCD. I'm not really interested in the camera because it does not have wide angle and because of the 13 MPs.
The question I have is: If Sony can put a super CCD in a Cybershot camera, why do they not use a super CCD in ALL their cybershot cameras? I expect that would make a noticeable difference in image quality. Is it a marketing or cost reduction strategy?

Problems:
I knew this camera did not offer raw file support, but the major disappointment was
that it lacks a 'fine' jpeg setting. Digital artifacts are unavoidable when compressing a
file this large to 4.5mb! (Similar to a 4-5 jpeg setting in Photoshop). Hopefully this
can be improved with a firmware upgrade. My Lumix did a much better job
compressing files.

DSC-W300 sample photos
My Sony T9 just broke and I started looking for a replacement. I never considered the DSC-W300 at first because I expected 13+ megapixels to have bad high ISO, but I was impressed enough by what I saw to buy one.
Here are some samples in a shop in Japan, taken at ISO1600 and ISO3200 at different resolutions. All other settings are standard except for the ISO and resolution.
What impressed me is that ISO3200 is VERY useable at 5MP - better than the Fuji in my opinion (I did take comparison shots but deleted the Fuji ones, so I can\'t post them). While it might seem perverse to have a 13MP camera and be happy with 5MP, I\'m just pleased to find a P&S camera that generates ANYTHING resembling useable at 3200.

I have the R1 as well.. Both are great. (W300 does not shoot raw, as the R1 does).
They are different beasts to me .. But for carry around all around versatile, the W300 is my fav
Here's an image shot from it ..
I Set it to black and white mode, with red filter.
